Notes: Abstract— The ACPD-method was used to measure crack growth in low cycle fatigue tests at elevated temperature. The material which was investigated at T= 550°C was the ferritic steel 2.25Cr–1Mo. Characteristic values of representative hysteresis loops were determined. The crack growth data were correlated with the effective part of the fracture mechanics parameter ΔJ. A new method for the calculation of ΔJ is proposed.

Notes: Abstract Investigations of the discharge for PA-CVD of TiN on steel substrates are carried out using optical emission spectroscopy. A great number of species could be identified in the discharge. The growth rate of dense layers shows a direct dependence on Ti+ intensities. The occurrence of TiN in the discharge leads to f aky, not compact layers, lowering the hardness of the layers.

Description / Table of Contents: Size Effect in the Low-Cycle Fatigue RegimeThis paper reports the results of the investigations on the problems of conversion of low-cycle fatigue data obtained with small specimens to large structures. Strain controlled fatigue tests have been carried out on specimens of various thickness in push-pull and reversed bending to investigate the geometrical and technological size effect on low-cycle fatigue life Ncr. It was found that a remarkable size effect exists in both loading conditions in LCF-regime. The relationship between materials characteristics (grain size, yield strength), specimen geometry (diameter or area of the cross section) and the fatigue life Ncr was obtained for various loading types and strain levels. Metallurgical and fracture mechanical aspects are considered to explain the size effect in LCF-regime.

Description / Table of Contents: Cyclic Hardening, Yield Surface and Dislocation Arrangement in Low-Cycle FatigueIn Many technical and structural components stress raisers exist which undergo cyclic plastic deformation. Models have been developed to calculate the strain distribution and the resulting life. They are based on the assumptions that Masing-behaviour, isotropic and kinematic hardening are valid with cyclic pasticity. These assumptions have been examined experimentally. An interpretive connection is made between mechanical yield surface and microscopical arrangement of dislocations in the sense of cyclic hardening behaviour.

Description / Table of Contents: Application of Wear Resistant PACVD-Coatings in Aluminium Diecasting under Economical and Ecological AspectsAluminium pressure diecasting is a frequently applied manufacturing process for the near netshape production of precision parts. State of the art production techniques still demand considerable amounts of die lubricants. But the side effects of these lubricants include a decrease in surface quality of the cast part as well as a prolongation of the casting cycle time. The job quality decreases and the waste and exhaust disposal during production and application of lubricants is ecologically risky. In this study different wear resistant coating systems have been developed in order to minimize the use of die lubricants in the casting process while at the same time increasing the service life of the diecasting tools.Nitrides, carbides and borides of titanium were synthesized by means of DC-pulse-PACVD. The influence of the process parameters gas composition, pressure, voltage and pulse/pulse repetition ratio was investigated. Compositional analysis was performed by analytical methods such as XRD, EDS, WDS and SIMS. Hardness, adhesion and friction behaviour of the layers were determined in order to describe their mechanical properties. The wetting angle was determined and the corrosion resistance was evaluated in dip tests in aluminium melt. A selection of the best coatings was then compared in diecasting praxis tests under tightened-up conditions reducing the amount of lubricants.TiN, Ti(B,N), TiC and multilayers of the system Ti-C-N were deposited exhibiting a wide range of stoichiometry. The coatings reached hardness values of up to 4400 HK0.005 and the friction coefficient μ was in the range of 0.3. In the diecasting praxis test the amount of die lubricant could be reduced by 97%. Under most severe conditions all layer types led to a minimum increase in the lifetime of the tool of factor 60 compared to an untreated dummy. A strong dependence on the layer type and on its stoichiometry could be observed. Ti(B,N) as the most successful coating in this study has not yet shown any sign of failure and already achieved an increase in lifetime of 300 times.
