Description: A two-dimensional unsteady transonic flow of a perfect gas with constant specific heats is considered, solutions being found in the form of perturbations from a uniform, sonic, isentropic flow. Longitudinal viscous stress terms are retained so that shock waves can be included. The case where the characteristic time of a temporal flow disturbance is large compared with the time taken by a sonic disturbance to traverse the transonic regime is studied. A similarity solution involving an arbitrary function of time is employed, such that the channel walls are in general not stationary. Solutions are presented for thick (shock fills transonic region) and thin (shock tends to a discontinuity) shock waves for both decelerating and accelerating channel flows. For the thin-shock case, both numerical and asymptotic solutions are given. Flow pictures illustrating variations in shock position and structure as well as velocity distributions are shown for exponentially decreasing and for harmonic temporal flow disturbances. © 1973, Cambridge University Press. Description: The paper reviews the objectives and some of the accomplishments of a number of programs to develop nonaxisymmetric nozzle technology for future tactical aircraft applications. Specific existing fighter aircraft model tests and preliminary studies are discussed which are designed to generate installed nozzle data, including the effects of thrust vectoring and reversal.

Description: Nonaxisymmetric nozzles, with in-flight thrust vectoring and/or reversing capabilities, provide the potential for substantial gains in fighter aircraft performance, maneuvering, survivability and ground handling. This paper presents an overview of some of the current programs to develop nonaxisymmetric nozzle technology for future aircraft applications. The initial phase of this program, which consists of a series of subscale model tests, engine/nozzle studies, system integration studies and simulation studies, has been initiated. Successful completion of this program will allow designers of future aircraft to consider, with high confidence, the integration of nonaxisymmetric nozzle concepts to improve aircraft mission performance effectiveness, survivability and cost.
