    Notes: The time-varying charge buildup in the quantum well region of a resonant tunneling diode (RTD) and related capacitive effects are calculated using the scattering matrix method developed. The small signal analysis of admittance shows a prominent influence from the capacitive effect, due to the dynamic shifting of the resonant energy levels. The model developed is helpful for understanding the RTD's high-frequency behavior and device applications.

    Notes: Electronic sources based upon resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) usually generate power by establishing limit cycles which exchange energy with storage elements in an external biasing circuit; hence, the output power in this type of implementation will always be limited by extrinsic effects. We verify the presence of multiple energy-storage mechanisms solely within the RTD and characterizes the interdependencies necessary to induce intrinsic oscillations observed in quantum mechanical simulations. Specifically, we show that a nonlinear "access'' resistance and quantum-well inductance is responsible for the hysteresis, "plateaulike'' behavior, and bistability associated with the intrinsic current–voltage (I–V) characteristic. Furthermore, a new circuit-level representation which accurately incorporates the nonlinear dependencies into these heretofore "linear'' equivalent-circuit elements is used to demonstrate the different roles, as well as the degree of cooperative interplay, of the intrinsic oscillations and hysteresis in determining the overall I–V characteristics of the RTD.

    Notes: A transient semiconductor device simulation model based on the recently developed Lei-Ting hydrodynamic balance equations is presented. Unlike other hydrodynamic models, where the various relaxation rates are imported from Monte Carlo calculations or simply assumed to be constant, our model calculates these relaxation rates within the simulation process, as functions of the electron drift velocity, electron temperature, as well as the electron density. Without any complicated mathematics, a decoupled method with a relatively large time step has been applied to the transient simulation on a one-dimensional ballistic diode. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Crack propagation rates have been measured in two aluminium alloys under cyclic and static loading, in air, and in salt solution. On the basis of these results, a model is proposed, whereby corrosion fatigue crack propagation may be interpreted in terms of fatigue and static stress corrosion characteristics. Two interacting processes are operative; one is “stress assisted dissolution”, which tends to inhibit mechanical failure by crack blunting and microbranching. The other is “environment assisted fracture” which occurs too rapidly for dissolution to occur. One or other of these processes is always observed to be dominant. This proposal is discussed in relation to other recent models for corrosion fatigue cracking. The effects of frequency, waveform and mean stress variations are also considered.

    Notes: Abstract —Three methods are presented, whereby' static’(R-curve) and fatigue crack growth data may be combined. In the first, a single curve is fitted through both sets of data, making due allowance for residual stresses from prior unloading and stress ratio. For the other two methods, crack growth is divided into tearing and ductile striation formation components. These components may be combined either by adding crack growth rates associated with specified values of stress intensity factor or by adding crack growth resistances associated with specified crack extensions. The results are compared with test data obtained from compact tension specimens of high strength aluminium alloys, BS.L97 (2024–T3) and DTD.5120 (7010–T7651).

    Notes: Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. dianthi (F.o.d.) was the species isolated most frequently from wilted glasshouse-grown pinks in south-west England, whereas F. avenaceum was less prevalent and F. culmorum was not found. Although infections by F. avenaceum, via the roots or through a cut-stem wound, caused symptoms identical to those characterizing mild infections due to F.o.d., the former was always pathogenically weak relative to the latter. Of several organisms screened for potential antagonistic capacity towards F.o.d., using an in-vitro dual culture plate technique, Trichoderma aureoviride, isolated as an endophyte from healthy pinks, proved most effective. Elevated temperatures substantially reduced the antagonistic capacity of micro-organisms in both in-vitro and in-vivo screens, except in the case of T. aureoviride where maximum antagonism occurred at 28°C, which was near the optimum for wilt disease in pinks. The tolerance shown by T. aureoviride to a wide range of pesticides used in commercial production of pinks under cover indicated its potential in a proposed integrated disease control programme.
