Abstract To a first approximation, every star is an M dwarf - but there are still considerable gaps in our understanding of these stars, particularly in the space density of the lowest mass stars. Fortunately, the 2µm sky surveys are likely to change this state of affairs. In this paper, I review briefly the likely impact of these surveys.
