Notes: Clean air - technical possibilities and economic consequences. Starting from the historical development of measures for maintaining clean air in the course of the industrial revolution, the article outlines advances in dust removal which have been accomplished in close, trusting cooperation between legislature, experts and plant operators. The interactions between mankind, technically modified and natural environment, and atmosphere, which have arisen as a consequence of the growth in population, are described and an attempt is made to assign the principal contaminants in the atmosphere to their causers on a global and a national basis. The relationship between rational use of energy and clean air maintenance becomes clear. Additive and integrated air purification procedures are explained with the aid of environmental protection measures adopted in coal-fired power plant and the costs of excessively low emission level demands pointed out. Examples of gas purification plant in the cellulose industry and the printing trade illustrate the possibilities offered by recycling.

Notes: The efficiency of reactors fed with particulate mixtures is often reduced by segregation of solids. Placing continuous mixers directly ahead of a reactor may be a solution to this problem. The performance of such mixers can be monitored for appropriate binary solids systems with an optical in-line measuring system. The tracer concentration (SiC or Irgalite) in Al(OH)3 was registered with high time resolution, thus making possible an extended statistical analysis of mixing processes using the power density spectrum. Experimental mixers with a maximum -throughput of 300 kg/h were fed with a fluctuating tracer concentration and the variance reduction ratios were determined. A model was developed that takes into account feeding constancy, residence time distribution and the limited homogeneity of particulate mixtures. Diagrams for continuous solids mixing processes are derived therefrom. They demonstrate the importance of high-accuracy feed-rate control.

Notes: Starting with a brief review of the development of the circulating fluid bed (CFB) reactor principle, its main features as an important tool for efficient and thus environmentally acceptable processing of fine particulate solids, typically less than 150 μm diameter, are discussed. Various new industrial processes and high temperature process options starting with alumina calcination are described. Developing applications in the cement, metallurgical and chemical industries are approaching large-scale industrial importance. Efficient combustion or pressure gasification of fossil fuels and carbon-containing residues, fulfilling increasingly strict environmental legislation, is by far the most rapidly expanding field of application. In support of these developments our fundamental understanding of the fluid dynamics of CFB riser and of cyclone precipitation at high solid loadings has to be steadily improved. The reaction behaviour of aggregating fine particulate solids of varying size distributions also remains an open question.

Notes: The quality of particulate mixtures influences strongly the efficiency of downstream process steps. The design or optimization of mixing processes requires fast and accurate methods for determining mixture quality. This paper describes an optical method for the in-line concentration measurement of the key (tracer) component in particulate mixtures with fiber optical probes. Small fluctuations of tracer concentration equivalent to a low concentration variance represent a high degree of mixing. Monochromatic light penetrates via fiber optical probes into a powder sample. A photometer measures the intensity of the diffuse reflected light. If the tracer differs in colour from the other components of the mixture its concentration can be determined. Three types of fiber optical probes were tested. For calibration two series of mixed samples covering a broad concentration range were prepared, one consisting of white Al(OH)3 and dark SiC and the other of Al(OH)3 and a much finer green pigment. The calibration graphs are described by the Kubelka-Munk theory. The influence of changes in particle size on the signals is reduced by choosing a probe with an angled arrangement of the fibers. The sample mass of the probes is estimated to ca. 0.01 g, based on comparison with random mixtures at different tracer concentrations. In-line measurements provide extensive data sets which allow advanced statistical intepretations of mixing processes.

Notes: Fluidized bed processes for the chemical and metallurgical industries, energy conversion, and pollution control. This article presents a review of, and selection criteria for, gas/solids reactors with the aid of examples of industrially operating fluidized bed processes. The choice of optimum reactor design with regard to flow and reaction conditions, heat and mass transfer, grain size, and retention time of solids and gas is considered. In conclusion, various processes are described in terms of several process flowsheets.

Notes: New industrial applications of the circulating fluidized bed. Strongly expanding fluidized beds in the boundary region between fluidized bed and pneumatic conveying, which can achieve a steady state only by recirculation of the solids are of considerable importance for environmental protection because of the high gas flow rates and the high relative velocities possible between gas and solids in performing reactions between gases and fines with an average particle diameter less than 300 μm. Lurgi has utilized the principle of the circulating fluidized bed industrially both in the high temperature regime for the non-pollutive production of process heat from low-grade coal in a plant of 84 MW thermal rating and in the low temperature regime for adsorptive, dry purification of fluorine-containing waste gases from aluminium electrolysis and for dry removal of pollutants from garbage-burning power plants. This paper reports on the new process.
