Notes: We have systematically investigated Galactic models for classical gammaray bursts (GRBs) in which gamma-ray bursters are ejected from the Galactic disk. It is relatively easy to construct models in which the predicted GRB sky distribution is isotropic and consistent with the present BATSE data if the outer halo is not spherically symmetric. The bursters must receive a velocity kick larger than ∼ 600–700 km s−1 at birth and remain active bursters for at least 109 yr. We suggest strongly magnetized neutron stars with magnetic fields of order 1015 G as possible sources of classical GRBs.

Notes: We have heard a wide-ranging set of talks on cosmology and high energy astrophysics at this conference. All I can really do in this short talk is to present my subjective impression of an arbitrary selection of highlights.

Notes: [Auszug] Radio trails are interpreted in terms of the twin-jet theory of double radio sources. A simple dynamical model of a narrow jet bending under the ram pressure of the intracluster medium is calculated and applied to some observations of the source associated with NGC1265. Observed radio emission must ...

Notes: [Auszug] For reasons outlined below, the dominant form of mass in the present Universe could be 'dead' remnants of massive or supermassive stars that formed when t£ 106yr. The active bright phase of these objects would last £ 107 yr (and would be over long before galaxies assembled as ...

Notes: [Auszug] A conducting sphere, expanding into a uniform magnetic field, will develop surface currents which prevent the field from penetrating it. If the shell expands relativistically, with constant Lorentz factor g 〉 1, out to a radius rmax, then the work done against the field is g2 (energy of swept-up ...

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 Schematic depiction of the termination of the solar wind (SW) by the interstellar medium (ISM). With respect to the Sun, the ISM has streaming speed v, density , at n at r. Notes: [Auszug] The beams squirt from active nuclei with velocities approaching c. The most direct indications of relativistic bulk motions are the 'superluminal' variations12 in compact sources: the detailed kinematics are still obscure-from a surfeit13, not an absence, of acceptable models-but most ideas entail ...

Notes: [Auszug] Isotropic cosmic X-rays in the I keV–I MeV range may be due to the Compton-blackbody process acting in remote radio galaxies or quasars. The break in the X-ray spectrum then poses a stringent condition on theories of radio source evolution and ...

Notes: [Auszug] We first consider the scattering of radiation by an electron at rest, neglecting recoil. The radiation field is described by N (e, q, j) photons per unit volume, per unit energy interval, per unit solid angle, q and j being polar co-ordinates centred on the electron. We are neglecting recoil, and ...

Notes: [Auszug] The Universe is inhomogeneous — and essentially fractal — on the scale of galaxies and clusters of galaxies, but most cosmologists believe that on larger scales it becomes isotropic and homogeneous: this is the ‘cosmological principle’. This principle was first adopted ...
