    Description / Table of Contents: The Palaeoproterozoic era (2500–1600 Ma) was a critical period of Earth history, with dynamic evolution from the deep planetary interior to its surface environment. Several lines of geological evidence suggest the existence of at least one pre-Rodinia supercontinent, named Nuna or Columbia, which formed near the end of Palaeoproterozoic time. Prior to this assembly, there may have been an older supercontinent (Kenorland) or perhaps only independently drifting supercratons. The tectonic records of amalgamation and dispersal of these ancient landmasses provide a framework that links processes of the deep Earth with those of its fluid envelope. The sixteen papers in this volume present reviews and new analytical data that span the geological record of Palaeoproterozoic Earth and provide a current picture of Palaeoproterozoic research. The volume provides a useful reference book for students and professional geoscientists interested in this important period of global evolution.

    Notes: Two samples from the Eclogite Micaschist Complex (EMC) and the Seconda Zona Diorito–Kinzigitica (IIDK) of the Sesia Zone have been studied using a high-spatial resolution laser probe 40Ar/39Ar technique with the aim of investigating the complexities of argon behaviour in metamorphic rocks and comparing their thermal histories. Data from a single large phengite grain from the EMC show a range of ages from mid-Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous. These ‘apparent age’ variations are spatially related to both locationwithin the grain and to intragrain microstructure. Modelling of the data shows that the profile formedby the diffusion of an excess argon component into the grain, parallel to the mica cleavage. Profileasymmetry is explained by temporal variations in microstructural development enabling excess argon toenter the grain at different times in different places. The temperatures of the initiation of deformationand the possible time-scales for the deformation can be calculated as a function of cooling rate. Allestimates suggest deformation at greenschist facies, in accord with the observed retrograde mineral assemblage. Absolute temperature estimates for deformation vary by less than 22 °C for different cooling ratesof 10 and 30 °C Ma−1 but vary by 80 °C with different estimates of diffusion parameters. The durationof deformation was for at least 2 Ma at 10 °C Ma−1 or 0.7 Ma at 30 °C Ma−1. Biotites from the IIDKsample record a Permian to Upper Cretaceous age range that correlates with grain size, the smallestgrain sizes yielding the youngest ages. This relationship is best explained by a partial resetting of biotitesduring an Alpine thermal event initiated not more than 70 Ma ago. Modelling of these data suggest thatthe sample never exceeded 300 °C during the Alpine. The profoundly different thermal histories of thetwo units—the EMC recrystallized at 550 °C whilst the IIDK remained below 300 °C—suggests thatthey may not have been juxtaposed until much later than the eclogite facies metamorphism.

    Notes: It is demonstrated that an AT-cut quartz crystal driven in the thickness-shear-wave mode and typically used as a sensor to monitor the viscoelastic shear-wave properties of a fluid also produce longitudinal pressure waves. Unlike the shear wave, these waves are capable of long-range propagation through the fluid and of reflection at its boundaries, notably at an outer fluid–air interface. They introduce a component into the measured electrical impedance and resonance frequency shift of the crystal, which reflects the setting up of cyclic pressure-wave resonances in the fluid. This has important implications for the practical employment of these crystal as sensors. Under appropriate conditions, as demonstrated for water and n-octane, it is possible to determine the propagating properties of sound waves in a fluid simultaneously with the viscoelastic shear-wave properties. These experiments are supported by an analysis of the appropriate hydrodynamic equations for waves in the crystal–fluid system, which predicts electrical characteristics in close agreement with those found experimentally. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An indoleacetic acid (IAA) up-regulated cDNA, referred to as Pp-C61, was isolated by differential screening of a cDNA library constructed from auxin-treated roots of Pinus pinaster. The Pp-C61 cDNA contains a 1068 bp open reading frame which encodes a polypeptide sharing no homology with known proteins. The N-terminal protein region contains a hydrophobic signal peptide suggesting that Pp-C61 is an extracellular protein. Pp-C61 is present as a single copy in the P. pinaster genome and homologous genes were detected in other gymnosperm and angiosperm trees. Pp-C61 was transcriptionally regulated by auxin with a maximal mRNA accumulation 6 h after treatment. Pp-C61 was up-regulated by IAA concentrations as low as 10− 10m. Up-regulation was found to be a primary (direct) response to auxin. Ethylene and abscisic acid, but not quercetin were able to promote Pp-C61 mRNA accumulation. As a putative extracellular protein, Pp-C61 was postulated to play a role in ectomycorrhiza formation. Pp-C61 was up-regulated in P. pinaster roots following inoculation with ectomycorrhizal fungi. Transcript accumulation was the highest (5.5-fold over control) in the presence of an IAA-overproducing mutant of Hebeloma cylindrosporum; it was less in the presence of wild-type strains of H. cylindrosporum and Rhizopogon roseolus. Pp-C61 transcript also accumulated upon inoculation with a non-mycorrhizal mutant of H. cylindrosporum. These results suggest that Pp-C61 up-regulation corresponds to a defence reaction in response to fungal colonization.

    Notes: Abstract The Sonnblick Dome is one of several domal structures affecting the interface between basement and cover within the Pennine Zone of the Tauern Window in the eastern Alps. Rb-Sr isotopic data, comprising 19 biotite and 22 white mica ages from variably deformed granitic gneisses, provide new evidence of the thermal and tectonic history of the dome and its relationships with other parts of the south-east Tauern Window. White mica ages generally cluster between 26 and 30 Ma although there are values up to 82 Ma, which appear to reflect incomplete equilibration during Tertiary metamorphism under low amphibolite facies conditions; six closely spaced samples from an intensely sheared ‘gneiss lamella’ are more tightly grouped between 26 and 27.6 Ma and provide the best estimate of the age of syntectonic crystallization. Biotite ages are systematically younger, ranging from 19 to 23.5 Ma, reflecting closure during post-metamorphic cooling. Sonnblick Dome and the Hochalm Dome approximately 20 km further east, where closure of Rb-Sr in biotite did not occur until 16.5 Ma; the metamorphic peak here is also probably younger, possibly as late as 22 Ma. The Sonnblick Dome was formed before 27 Ma and the deformation style had changed to extension before biotite closure by 19 Ma. In contrast, rapid updoming in the Hochalm Dome was previously dated at 16.5 Ma and the differences in thermal history can be linked to differences in deformation history. Overall the geochronological data from the south-east Tauern Window demonstrate the heterogeneity of thermal history on a geographical scale of 10 km and emphasize the importance of tectonic displacements in controlling temperature within orogenic belts.

    Notes: Abstract Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has proved an especially difficult membrane material to form reproducibly. In its fabrication for sensor use, variable temperature solvent casting has been assessed and related to function as external membranes of a classical dual membrane amperometric oxidase electrode. The thermal history of the casting solution was shown to have an effect on both thickness and the permeability. With increasing temperature of the cast solution (4–37°C) membrane thicknesses increased (5–30 μm). Amperometric responses to catechol and hydrogen peroxide decreased with increasing casting solution temperature whereas responses to ascorbate remained unchanged. These properties are tentatively attributed to the formation of discrete layers through differential changes in the rate of solvent evaporation. Scanning electron microscopy revealed distinct microstructure zones supporting this proposition and attesting to the need to factor in environmental temperature during casting. ©1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Abstract The reaction of 15 varieties of maize to the growth and cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) production ofPenicillium griseofulvum was examined as a means of identifying varieties which would be resistant to this infestation. Only one variety, MMEH-25, was resistant to the fungus, seeds containing little CPA 30 days after infestation. This variety and Ganga-5, which was only moderately resistant, are popular commercial cultivars.

    Description: The Mesoarchaean–Palaeoproterozoic stratigraphic record of the Singhbhum crustal province, eastern India, implies sedimentation and volcanism in a changing tectonic scenario, and thus assumes immense geological significance. Although efforts have been made by many researchers in the past several decades to summarize various geological aspects of the Singhbhum crustal province, a critical synthesis of various stratigraphic issues was long overdue. The present contribution is an updated critical synthesis of the Mesoarchaean–Palaeoproterozoic stratigraphic record of the Singhbhum crustal province. We have pointed out the problematic stratigraphic issues of the Singhbhum crustal province that deserve careful scrutiny in order to gain better insights into the mode of stratigraphic sequence building.
