    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird nachgewiesen, dass die thermische Zeitkonstante (d.i. das VerhÄltnis von WÄrmespeicherung zu WÄrmedurchfluss) ein ausreichendes und einfaches Kriterium für die AbschÄtzung der thermischen Vollkommenheit von GebÄuden ist, die einem unstetigen WÄrmeeinfluss ausgesetzt sind und einen optimalen Wert von 20 Stunden als ausreichend und ökonomisch aufweisen. Ferner interpretiert diese Grösse die wechselseitige Beziehung zwischen den OberflÄchentemperaturen im geschlossenen Raum und weist darauf hin, dass die Summe der Zeitkonstanten eines jeden einzelnen Bauelementes für sich nicht als Gesamtmass brauchbar ist.
    Abstract: Resume I1 est prouvé ici que la constante thermique de temps (rapport entre la chaleur emmagasinée et la chaleur transmise) est un critère simple et suffisant pour définir les propriétés thermiques des éléments constitutifs d'immeubles. Ce rapport correspond à un flux de chaleur non-uniforme et atteint son optimum au voisinage de 20 heures comme valeur d'efficacité en tenant compte de facteurs économiques. On discute en outre l'action réciproque de la température des surfaces intérieures d'une pièce. On démontre enfin que la somme des constantes de temps de chaque élément de l'immeuble pris individuellement n'est pas propre à définir l'ensemble.
    Notes: Abstract Evidence is given that the thermal time-constant (ratio of heat stored to heat transmitted) is an effective and simple criterion for the assessment of thermal performance of building fabrics subjected to unsteady heat flow and brings out an optimum value of 20 hr for efficient and economic design. Further, it discusses the mutual interactions between the internal surface temperatures of an enclosure suggesting the inadequacy of the time-lag property concept of any building element taken individually.

    Description: Broad relativistic iron lines from neutron star X-ray binaries are important probes of the inner accretion disc. The X-ray reflection features can be weakened due to strong magnetic fields or very low iron abundances such as is possible in X-ray binaries with low mass, first generation stars as companions. Here, we investigate the reality of the broad iron line detected earlier from the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1820–30 with a degenerate helium dwarf companion. We perform a comprehensive, systematic broad-band spectral study of the atoll source using Suzaku and simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift observations. We have used different continuum models involving accretion disc emission, thermal blackbody and thermal Comptonization of either disc or blackbody photons. The Suzaku data show positive and negative residuals in the region of Fe K band. These features are well described by two absorption edges at 7.67 ± 0.14 keV and 6.93 ± 0.07 keV or partial covering photoionized absorption or by blurred reflection. Though, the simultaneous Swift and NuSTAR data do not clearly reveal the emission or absorption features, the data are consistent with the presence of either absorption or emission features. Thus, the absorption based models provide an alternative to the broad iron line or reflection model. The absorption features may arise in winds from the inner accretion disc. The broad-band spectra appear to disfavour continuum models in which the blackbody emission from the neutron-star surface provides the seed photons for thermal Comptonization. Our results suggest emission from a thin accretion disc ( kT disc ~ 1 keV), Comptonization of disc photons in a boundary layer most likely covering a large fraction of the neutron-star surface and innermost parts of the accretion disc, and blackbody emission ( kT bb ~ 2 keV) from the polar regions.

    Description: We present spectral and energy-dependent timing characteristics of the hard X-ray transient IGR J17497–2821 based on XMM–Newton observations performed five and nine days after its outburst on 2006 September 17. We find that the source spectra can be well described by a hard ( ~ 1.50) power law and a weak multicolour disc blackbody with inner disc temperature kT in  ~ 0.2 keV. A broad iron Kα line with FWHM ~ 27 000 km s –1 , consistent with that arising from an accretion disc truncated at large radius, was also detected. The power density spectra of IGR J17497–2821, derived from the high-resolution (30 μs) timing-mode XMM–Newton observations, are characterized by broad-band noise components that are well modelled by three Lorentzians. The shallow power-law slope, low disc luminosity and the shape of the broad-band power density spectrum indicate that the source was in the hard state. The rms variability in the softer energy bands (0.3–2 keV) found to be ~1.3 times that in 2–5 and 5–10 keV energy bands. We also present the energy-dependent timing analysis of the RXTE /PCA data, where we find that at higher energies, the rms variability increases with energy.

    Description: Approximately 10–20 per cent of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are known to eject powerful jets from the innermost regions. There is very little observational evidence if the jets are powered by spinning black holes and if the accretion discs extend to the innermost regions in radio-loud AGN. Here, we study the soft X-ray excess, the hard X-ray spectrum and the optical/UV emission from the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 0558–504 using Suzaku and Swift observations. The broad-band X-ray continuum of PKS 0558–504 consists of a soft X-ray excess emission below 2 keV that is well described by a blackbody ( kT ~ 0.13 keV) and high-energy emission that is well described by a thermal Comptonization (compps) model with kT e ~ 250 keV, optical depth  ~ 0.05 (spherical corona) or kT e ~ 90 keV,  ~ 0.5 (slab corona). The Comptonizing corona in PKS 0558–504 is likely hotter than in radio-quiet Seyferts such as IC 4329A and Swift J2127.4+5654. The observed soft X-ray excess can be modelled as blurred reflection from an ionized accretion disc or optically thick thermal Comptonization in a low-temperature plasma. Both the soft X-ray excess emission when interpreted as the blurred reflection and the optical/UV to soft X-ray emission interpreted as intrinsic disc Comptonized emission implies spinning ( a  〉 0.6) black hole. These results suggest that disc truncation at large radii and retrograde black hole spin both are unlikely to be the necessary conditions for launching the jets.
