Notes: Abstract 2-(meta-methoxyphenyl) thiazolidine (hereafter called 2mmpT) has medicinal importance, as the five-membered thiazolidine ring happens to be the active part of penicillin. This material has been synthesized and crystallized. The crystals are needle-shaped and of dimensions 0.3 × 0.5 × 1.5mm3 using X-ray diffraction technique, oscillation and Weissenberg patterns of the sample are taken. It is shown that the crystal is monoclinic and the unit cell parameters are found to be a = 1.007(5) nm, b=0.545(3) nm, c=1.720(8) nm and β=71.3(3)°. The space group is P21/c. From IR absorption spectrum of the sample, the characteristic peak pertaining to NH at 3250cm−1 has been identified. The proton magnetic resonance (PMR) spectrum of the sample unambiguously supports the proposed structure of the compound. It has been confirmed that thiazolidine complex in the present case is a cyclic and not a linear one. The implications are discussed.

Notes: Curing reactions of a new crosslinking agent, 1,3,5-tris(2-methylaziridinyl-1-methyl)benzene (TRIMAM) with carboxylterminated polybutadiene have been studied by dynamic differential thermal analysis and by IR spectroscopy. The crosslinking reactions are found to be faster for this new compound compared with the conventional tris-1-(2-methyl) axiridinyl phosphine oxide (MAPO).

Notes: Latex blends of different compositions of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-n-butylacrylate) and gelatin have been synthesised in latex form with crosslinking agents. These latex blends were characterized by thermal and mechanical properties. The morphology of cross-linked latex blends were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Notes: Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks of cellulose nitrate and castor oil based polyurethanes have been prepared by using excess diisocyanate for the crosslinking process. Semi-IPNs with 30% cellulose nitrate showed some degree of miscibility. Enhanced miscibility was observed by the partial replacement of cellulose nitrate with poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate). The ternary IPNs of poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate), cellulose nitrate, and polyurethanes showed increased tensile strength and decreased flammability than those based on cellulose nitrate and polyurethanes alone.

Notes: Three series of novel polyurethane elastomers containing phenolphthalein as chain extenders were synthesized. The structure of the polyurethane was analyzed using IR and wide-angle X-ray diffraction studies. Tensile strength and percentage of elongation of all the series of polymers were studied. Thermal decomposition was studied using differential scanning calorimetry. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Different formulations of rubber with chopped coconut fiber (treated and untreated) as reinforcing agent were prepared. These reinforced systems were vulcanized at 153°C and the properties of the vulcanizates were studied by stress-strain, shore A hardness, and abrasion loss measurements. The bonding between the rubber and fillers were improved by the addition of bonding agents. The bonding effect of different bonding agents were compared. The reinforcing property of the treated fiber was compared with the untreated one. Aging resistance of the composites were studied. The fracture surfaces have been studied by scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) and the failure mechanism has been explained.

Notes: Ternary semi-IPNs of nitrocellulose, poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate), and polyurethanes have been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, SEM, and differential scanning calorimetry. Semi-IPNs of nitrocellulose-polyurethanes are found to be incompatible whereas the ternary system consisting of nitrocellulose-poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate) and polyurethanes is partially compatible. Hydrogen bonding interactions are discussed based on the FT-IR analysis. The tensile strength and percent elongation are interpreted on the basis of the NCO/OH ratio and composition.

Notes: A new class of urethane-acrylic monomers was synthesized from diisocyanates such as toluylene diisocyanate (TDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), unsaturated alcohols like hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA), and saturated alcohols such as stearly alcohol and decanol. The monomers were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy. Urethane pendent acrylic polymers, obtained by polymerizing these monomers, were characterized by IR, solubility viscosity, and thermal studies. The thermodynamic parameters for the degradation were calculated and a probable degradation mechanism is proposed.
