    Notes: This paper provides a survey of recent research on the US antitrust system. First we provide an overview of the US antitrust system, describing the roles of the US Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission and case law. Second, we provide a new econometric trend analysis on the enforcement of US antitrust law, showing that (1) enforcement demonstrates some trend behavior, as well as comovement with business cycles; (2) the time series of antitrust cases demonstrates two distinct episodes, which we characterize as ‘pre-deregulation’ and ‘post-deregulation;’ (3) the time series of government antitrust filings leads the time series of private antitrust filings. Finally, we describe recent economic research relevant to the area of antitrust and the impact of this research on US antitrust policy.

    Notes: Formation of nanocrystalline calcia from calcite has been studied in situ via transmission electron microscopy. The crystallographic transformation occurred via two mechanisms: the first is by distortion of the cleaved rhombohedron of calcite, formed by {104} planes in hexagonal coordinates, into a cube. This produced a microstructure of oriented, elongated nanocrystals of calcia with planar boundaries. In the second mechanism, the micrometer-sized parent calcite particles broke up into nano-sized grains as the decomposition began, leading to irregularly shaped, randomly oriented nanocrystals of calcia.

    Notes: Abstract The U.S. poverty rate, like many other aggregate economic time series, shows considerable persistence. It is logical to consider the model involving a unit root to provide a good description of the data generation process for the poverty rate. We pretest for unit roots in annual U.S. poverty rate data for the postwar period to examine its long-run features given the importance of a unit root for economic forecasting, macroeconometric cointegration modeling and Granger causality testing. Applying a number of available test procedures for pretesting on U.S. postwar poverty rate data, we find results that both support and contradict the claim that the poverty rate is a difference stationary process. The poverty rate data are found to be consistent with a unit root hypothesis when the alternative isI(0) with a linear trend. But the null hypothesis of a unit root is convincingly rejected when the alternative ofI(0) with a broken trend line for a break at an endogenous point in time is considered. The estimate of the break in the trend corresponds to an information technology shock during the early 1970s.

    Notes: Kinetics, mechanism and modeling of the microstructural evolution of a 15Cr-15Ni-2.2Mo-0.3Ti modified austenitic stainless steel (alloy D9) during dynamic recrystallization (DRX)have been investigated. The kinetics of DRX has been investigated employing a modified Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) model. The microstructural study shows that nucleation of newgrains during DRX takes place on the parent grain boundary by a bulging mechanism. Nosignificant texture component has been found to develop in the recrystallized matrix. A substantialamount of twins have been observed in the recrystallized matrix. It is proposed that twins play animportant role during the nucleation and subsequent expansion of DRX in alloy D9, which in turnmoderates the texture in the recrystallized matrix. An artificial neural network model has also beendeveloped to predict the fraction of DRX and grain size, as a function of processing conditions. Agood correlation between experimental findings and predicted results has been obtained

    Notes: Abstract The acoustic emission (AE) signal obtained during breakaway oxidation and internal cracking of 2 1/4Cr-1Mo steel at 900°C was analysed over its frequency domain. Three regions, namely pre-breakaway, post-breakaway, and internal cracking were distinguished and confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy observations. The frequency analysis of the AE signal obtained in the three different regions showed three different characteristic patterns. Frequency spectra based on predominant frequencies were correlated with the physical phenomena happening during the course of oxidation.

    Notes: Abstract The onset of breakaway oxidation and in-situ cracking and spalling of the oxide layer formed on 2 1/4Cr-1Mo steel have been detected by the use of the acoustic emission (AE) technique. Various AE parameters, viz., acoustic emission event counts vs time, acoustic emission counts vs time, and voltage level vs time have been used to detect these phenomena. It has been found that variations in AE parameters are marginal during heating at 600, 700, and 800°C, and a sudden rise in these parameters occurs during cooling. Increase in AE activity during cooling has been related to spalling of the oxide layers. At 900 and 950°C, a considerable increase in AE parameters (except voltage level) has been detected after certain times at the respective temperatures. By comparing with corresponding thermogravimetric curves, this increase in AE parameters has been attributed to the onset of breakaway oxidation. A very large increase in AE parameters during cooling from these temperatures has been related to in-situ cracking.

    Notes: Abstract The onset of breakaway oxidation andin situ cracking of the oxide formed on 9 Cr-1 Mo steel in air at 900 and 950° C has been detected by acoustic emission (AE) technique. AE parameters, i.e. AE counts and AE event counts, show negligible increase during isothermal heating at these temperatures, until at a point, where a sudden increase in AE activity is found. This point corresponds to the onset of breakaway oxidation. An enormous increase in AE activity after the start of cooling has been attributed to the separation of scale from matrix as a result of thermal stresses arising during cooling. Peak amplitude distribution is measured andb values are calculated which help in distinguishing the phenomenon at 900 and 950° C in terms of the amplitudes of the AE emission released.
