Notes: This paper is concerned with a new technique (the terrestrial/photogrammetric (TP) technique) for the detection and compensation of systematic height errors in block aerial triangulation. The technique improves the height accuracy of such triangulation by reducing the original bridging distance, using new bands of corrected photogrammetric tie points as height control together with the original bands of the terrestrial (or ground) height control. A number of photogrammetric blocks with different characteristics and configurations have been tested in a comprehensive manner. The tests show that the TP technique gives consistent results over a wide range of circumstances and that it is a most effective, simple and inexpensive method for the compensation of systematic errors.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉RésuméCet article relate une technique nouvelle permettant de détecter et de compenser les erreurs altimétriques systématiques dans l'aérotriangulation par blocs: la technique terrestre/photogrammétrique (TP).

Notes: Sunflower downy mildew (SDM) caused by Plasmopara halstedii, is a major disease of sunflower. Eleven resistance genes have been identified, but allelic relationships among these genes are not clear. This study examined the inheritance and allelic relationships of genes conferring resistance to SDM races 1, 2 and 3 (virulence phenotypes 100, 300 and 700, respectively) and confirmed a twelfth resistance gene. Three USDA Plant Introductions, AMES 3235, PI 497250, and PI 497938, and three released lines, RHA 266, RHA 274 and DM-2 were studied. RHA 266 has only the Pl1 gene for race 1 resistance. Digenic inheritance of resistance was found in AMES 3235, PI 497250, and RHA 274. These lines have the Pl1 and Pl12 genes, conferring resistance to race 1, and the Pl2 and Pl11 genes, conferring resistance to race 2. DM-2 and PI 497938 have Pl12 (but not Pl1 for resistance to race 1, the Pl12 gene (but not the Pl2) for resistance to race 2, and Pl5 for resistance to race 3. These resistance genes will serve as a foundation for future gene designations and genetic diversity studies of resistance to SDM.

Notes: Two cultivars of maize (Zea mays), Giza 2 (G2) and Population 45 (P45), were grown under natural conditions in pots containing clay loam soil, either infested or not infested with inoculum of Cephalosporium maydis, the causal fungus of late wilt disease. When the plants were 21 days old, they were subjected to two irrigation treatments: irrigation to field capacity, and irrigation after 60% depletion of the available soil moisture at the root zone, i.e. soil moisture stress. Under nonstressed conditions plants of cultivar G2 showed a lower percentage of infection than those of P45. In stressed plants, the percentage of infection increased significantly. Compared with controls (nonstressed, healthy plants), higher percentages of plant dry mass (leaves + stem + cobs) were achieved by all treatments with G2 than with P45, which did not produce cobs under stress conditions. Nonstressed healthy plants had higher transpiration rates and relative water contents than the water-stressed diseased plants. The leaves of diseased plants had a higher content of the amino acid proline than those of nonstressed, healthy plants, probably associated with water stress due to the disease.Infection resulted in a reduction of the number of the vascular bundles in the cross-section of the internode. The values of the phloem area per unit leaf area were greatly reduced in water-stressed and infected plants. In addition, many xylem vessels were occluded in diseased plants but much more in the susceptible P45 than in the moderately resistant G2. Occlusion may be the most important factor causing the symptoms of the disease. The hydraulic conductance (Kh) of the xylem tissue supplying the transpiring areas was calculated from the conduit lumen diameters using the Hagen–Poiseuille relation. The highest Kh values were obtained in the nonstressed, healthy plants, particularly those of P45; plants with both water stress and disease showed the lowest Kh values. The efficiency of xylem conductance was further examined by calculations of the leaf specific conductance and the predicted maximum pressure gradients. Conductance was strongly reduced by infection in both cultivars and there was a corresponding increase in pressure gradients. These observations were consistent with observed reduction in xylem tissues and occlusion of xylem vessels by the infection.

Notes: Abstract Titanium was anodized potentiodynamically in acidic solution of pH 3 (Na2SO4 + H2SO4) in the potential region before and at oxygen evolution. The oxide film growth efficiency in the range of potential above oxygen evolution was investigated using galvanostatic charging curves. A value of 62% for the efficiency was estimated. The conductivity characteristics of the oxide film formed in the two regions were investigated on the basis of the variation of the dielectric constant. Values of 18.2 and 39.7 for the dielectric constant were obtained for oxides formed in the region before and at the oxygen evolution potential, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Mechanically polished zirconium electrodes were potentiodynamically polarized in phosphate buffer solutions of various pH values and in 0.5 lvl NaOH. The results show that the shape of the I-E curves is independent of the solution pH. At relatively low scan rates, oxygen gas evolution was observed. The oxide film thickness was calculated from the values of the charge consumed in the anodic process assuming 100% current efficiency for oxide formation below oxygen evolution (lower values for the current efficiency are assumed for potentials above oxygen evolution). Capacitance measurements, together with the calculated oxide thickness, were used to estimate values for the dielectric constant of the oxide. Two different values of the dielectric constant were obtained for the oxides formed in the range of potential below and above oxygen evolution. Also, higher dielectric constant values were obtained with increasing solution pH. Anion incorporation was assumed to increase the conductivity of the oxide films and, hence, decrease the dielectric constant. A two-layer structure is proposed for the anodically formed oxide on zirconium in aqueous solutions; an anion-free layer near the metal and an outer layer containing the incorporated anions.

Notes: This study tested the relationships of the three dimensions of emotional intelligence (EQ) (self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy) to managers' concern for the quality of products and services and problem-solving behavior of subordinates during conflict. The results of hierarchical regression analysis show that self-awareness and self-regulation are positively associated with problem solving, and self-regulation was positively associated with concern for quality. There was a marginally significant main effect of empathy on quality and interaction effect of self-regulation and empathy on concern for quality. The implication of the study is that supervisors, who are deficient in EQ, may be provided appropriate training in it that will improve their concern for quality and problem solving.
