    Description: Abstract The role of copepod Calanus sinicus on the production of dimethylsulfide (DMS)/dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in Jiaozhou Bay was evaluated in field measurements and laboratory experiments. Samples at 10 sites in the bay were collected monthly from June 2010 to May 2011 (except for March 2011), and zooplankton species composition was analyzed. Effects of C. sinicus grazing on DMS/DMSP production at different conditions (i.e., algal diets, food concentrations, and salinities) were assessed in the laboratory. Data from the field experiment showed that C. sinicus was the dominant copepod in Jiaozhou Bay (up to 123 individuals m−3 in May 2011) and preferred to graze on diatom. DMS and DMSP concentrations not only depend on phytoplankton abundance, but also phytoplankton species and bacterial abundance. In the laboratory experiment, compared with Gymnodinium sp. or Emiliania huxleyi, C. sinicus feeding on Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros curvisetus exhibited increased DMS concentration, whereas high salinity inhibited DMS production. Copepod ingested 0.5%‐35% of DMSP in filtered phytoplankton, and copepod DMSP ingestion turnover rate in Jiaozhou Bay was up to 29 pmol L−1 d−1. Although the microbial DMSP consumption rate was 10‐2620 fold of copepod turnover rate, copepod grazing was still one of the important routes in DMSP loss processes through food chain. This study indicated that DMSP was transferred from phytoplankton to copepod body, fecal pellet, and seawater through copepod grazing. Our results provided important information to understand the biogeochemical cycle of DMSP in Jiaozhou Bay.

    Description: Motivation: Owing to its importance in both basic research (such as molecular evolution and protein attribute prediction) and practical application (such as timely modeling the 3D structures of proteins targeted for drug development), protein remote homology detection has attracted a great deal of interest. It is intriguing to note that the profile-based approach is promising and holds high potential in this regard. To further improve protein remote homology detection, a key step is how to find an optimal means to extract the evolutionary information into the profiles. Results: Here, we propose a novel approach, the so-called profile-based protein representation, to extract the evolutionary information via the frequency profiles. The latter can be calculated from the multiple sequence alignments generated by PSI-BLAST. Three top performing sequence-based kernels (SVM-Ngram, SVM-pairwise and SVM-LA) were combined with the profile-based protein representation. Various tests were conducted on a SCOP benchmark dataset that contains 54 families and 23 superfamilies. The results showed that the new approach is promising, and can obviously improve the performance of the three kernels. Furthermore, our approach can also provide useful insights for studying the features of proteins in various families. It has not escaped our notice that the current approach can be easily combined with the existing sequence-based methods so as to improve their performance as well.     Description: We used two tracks of ALOS PALSAR images to investigate the focal mechanism and slip distribution of the 2011 March 24, M W 6.8 Burma strike-slip earthquake. Three different SAR techniques, namely conventional interferometry, SAR pixel offsets (SPO) and multiple-aperture InSAR (MAI), were employed to obtain the coseismic surface deformation fields along the ~30 km length of the fault rupture. Along-track measurements from SPO and MAI techniques show a high correlation, and were subsequently used to precisely determine the location and extent of the surface fault trace. The best-fitting fault model geometry derived from an iterative inversion technique suggests that the rupture occurred on a near-vertical sinistral strike-slip fault west of the Nam Ma fault with a strike of 70°. A maximum slip of 4.2 m occurs at a depth of 2.5 km, with significant slip constrained only to the upper 10 km of the crust.

    Description: We analyse the 2D correlation function of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS sample of massive galaxies of the ninth data release to measure cosmic expansion H and the angular diameter distance D A at a mean redshift of 〈 z 〉 = 0.57. We apply, for the first time, a new correlation function technique called clustering wedges μ ( s ). Using a physically motivated model, the anisotropic baryonic acoustic feature in the galaxy sample is detected at a significance level of 4.7 compared to a featureless model. The baryonic acoustic feature is used to obtain model-independent constraints cz / H / r s = 12.28 ± 0.82 (6.7 percent accuracy) and D A / r s =  9.05 ± 0.27 (3.0 per cent) with a correlation coefficient of –0.5, where r s is the sound horizon scale at the end of the baryonic drag era. We conduct thorough tests on the data and 600 simulated realizations, finding robustness of the results regardless of the details of the analysis method. Combining this with r s constraints from the cosmic microwave background, we obtain H (0.57) = 90.8 ± 6.2 km s –1 Mpc –1 and D A (0.57) = 1386 ± 45 Mpc. We use simulations to forecast results of the final BOSS CMASS data set. We apply the reconstruction technique on the simulations demonstrating that the sharpening of the anisotropic baryonic acoustic feature should improve the detection as well as tighten constraints of H and D A by ~30 per cent on average.

    Description: Acidic airway microenvironment is one of the representative pathophysiological features of chronic inflammatory respiratory diseases. Epithelial barrier function is maintained by tight junctions (TJs), which act as the first physical barrier against the inhaled substances and pathogens of airway. As previous studies described, acid stress caused impaired epithelial barriers and led the hyperpermeability of epithelium. However, the specific mechanism is still unclear. We have showed previously the existence of transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV)1 channel in airway epithelium, as well as its activation by acidic stress in 16HBE cells. In this study, we explored the acidic stress on airway barrier function and TJ proteins in vitro with 16HBE cell lines. Airway epithelial barrier function was determined by measuring by trans-epithelial electrical resistance (TER). TJ-related protein (claudin-1, claudin-3, claudin-4, claudin-5, claudin-7, and ZO-1) expression was examined by western blotting of insoluble fractions of cell extraction. The localization of TJ proteins were visualized by immunofluorescent staining. Interestingly, stimulation by pH 6.0 for 8h slightly increased the epithelial resistance in 16HBE cells insignificantly. However, higher concentration of hydrochloric acid (lower than pH 5.0) did reduce the airway epithelial TER of 16HBE cells. The decline of epithelial barrier function induced by acidic stress exhibited a TRPV1-[Ca 2+ ] i dependent pathway. Of the TJ proteins, claudin-3 and claudin-4 seemed to be sensitive to acidic stress. The degradation of claudin-3 and claudin-4 induced by acidic stress could be attenuated by specific TRPV1 blocker or intracellular Ca 2+ chelator BAPTA-AM.

    Description: We investigate coseismic deformation of the 24 March 2011 M w  6.8 Tarlay, Myanmar, earthquake using ALOS PALSAR data from both descending and ascending passes. Using high-quality synthetic aperture radar interferograms and amplitude-offset images, the nearly linear surface rupture is well traced along the western end of the Nam Ma fault and strikes ~69°. From both descending and ascending pass Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data and a rigorous maximum a posteriori probabilistic inversion method, we infer that the event involved mostly a pure left-lateral strike-slip rupture with near-vertical geometry. Our one-segment model shows that the maximum slip of ~4.1 m occurred at ~4 km depth, much larger than the slip at the surface. Both interferograms also reveal a small segment to the east of the main rupture, in a densely populated farming area. Our inversion of a two-segment model shows a similar slip distribution on the main fault, in addition to ~0.1–0.3 m left-lateral slip with normal component on a 58° north-dipping segment. The total seismic moment from the two-segment model is 1.95 x 10 19 N·m, equivalent to an M w  6.79 earthquake, which is comparable to the U.S. Geological Survey seismic inversion estimate of 2.10 x 10 19 N·m ( M w  6.84). The earthquake occurred within a group of east-northeast-striking left-lateral strike-slip faults near the Myanmar–Laos border, which are seismically active and reflect a system of actively clockwise rotating blocks.     Description: Multi-electrode Pb(Zr,TiO) 3 /Ni cylindrical layered magnetoelectric (ME) composites were made by electroplating. The electroplated Ni layers were arrayed as four arcs on the inner PZT cylinder surface. The axial ME voltage coefficient of the composites was studied. Due to the cylinder symmetry, each of the four units of the PZT/Ni cylinder showed the same ME voltage response as the whole cylindrical ME composite, or when connected in parallel. When the four units were connected in series, the ME voltage was improved about three times than the single unit. This optimization is promising for the miniaturized ME devices design.
