In:  Supplement to: Armienti, Pietro; Messiga, Bruno; Vannucci, R (1998): Sand provenance from major and trace element analyses of bulk rock and sand grains. Terra Antartica, 5(3), 589-599, hdl:10013/epic.28346.d001
    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Thirty-nine medium and fine grained sandstones from between 19,26 and 147,23 mbsf in the Cape Roberts-l core (CRP-1) were analysed for 10 major and 16 trace elements. Using whole-lock compositions, 9 samples were selected for analyses of mineral and glass grains by energy dispersive electron microscope. Laser-Ablation Mass-Spectrometry was used to determine rare earth elements and 14 additional trace elements in glass shards, pyroxenes and feldspars in order to examine their contribution to the bulk rock chemistry. Geochemical data reveal the major contribution played by the Granite Harbour Intrusives to the whole rock composition, even if a significant input is supplied by McMurdo volcanics and Ferrar dolerite pyroxenes McMurdo volcanics were studied in detail; they appeal to derive from a variety of litologies, and a dominant role of wind transpoitation from exposures of volcanic rocks may be inferred from the contemporary occurrence of different compositions at all depths. Only at 116.55 mbsf was a thin layer of tephra found, linked to an explosive eruption McMurdo volcanic rocks exhibit larger abundances at depths above 62 mbsf, in correspondence with the onset of volcanic activity in the McMurdo Sound area. From 62 mbsf to the bottom of the core, McMurdo volcanics are less abundant and probably issued from some centres in the McMurdo Sound region. However, available data do not allow the exclusion of wind transport from some eruptive centres active in north Victoria Land at the beginning of the Miocene Epoch.

Notes: Cerium has been determined in thirty-six international geochemical reference samples using candoluminescence emission analysis. Samples are fused with sodium peroxide in nickel crucibles and interfering elements are removed by an ion exchange technique.Cerium values obtained in the present work generally lie within ranges reported in the literature or close to the upper or lower ends of these ranges. Candoluminescence values for cerium compare favourably with previously reported INAA values for most of the geochemical reference samples analysed in the present study.

Notes: Rare earth elements were determined by secondary ion mass spectrometry for 13 silicate rock samples, ranging from ultramafic-mafic to acidic compositions, 2 feldspar and 1 biotite separates. As a whole, the investigated samples are characterized by matrices and rare earth elements spectra covering most geological applications. The present data are compared with reference values. The advantage of using secondary ion mass spectrometry as a fundamental tool for trace element detection in bulk samples in the few ppm-ppb region is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract In this paper the geometrical theory of pulse distortion and energy launching into multimode optical fibres is generalized when skew rays are taken into account. To this purpose, within the geometrical theory of skew rays, we firstly obtained a new expression for the numerical aperture. From this expression we derived an extensive analysis of the energy launched and the pulse response of a multimode optical fibre. A better launching efficiency and a different pulse form at the output of the fibre together with a larger broadening are obtained in comparison with the results derived from theories only for meridional rays. The theory is also applied to sources having planar geometry (such as LED) and linear geometry (such as semiconductor lasers), and the response to some rectangular-shaped pulses is investigated. Finally some considerations concerning scattering effects are described.

Notes: Abstract In this paper the different loss mechanisms of light in multimode fibres are analysed from the point of view of the extinction of leaky skew rays. First, the intrinsic loss mechanism of leaky rays due to optical tunnel effect is fully investigated by means of a quasi-classical approach and a well approximated form of the relative extinction coefficient is derived. Second, the influence of other loss phenomena, due to imperfections or impurities in the fibre such as core and cladding absorption and scattering, on the relative contribution of leaky rays is analysed. Finally some phenomena of failed excitation of leaky rays are also examined. The phenomena are analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively and a comparative analysis of various effects referring to actual fibres is made.
