    Description: Nucleosome-binding proteins act to modulate the promoter chromatin architecture and transcription of target genes. We used genomic and gene-specific approaches to show that two such factors, histone H1 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1), exhibit a reciprocal pattern of chromatin binding at many RNA polymerase II-transcribed promoters. PARP-1 was enriched and H1 was depleted at these promoters. This pattern of binding was associated with actively transcribed genes. Furthermore, we showed that PARP-1 acts to exclude H1 from a subset of PARP-1-stimulated promoters, suggesting a functional interplay between PARP-1 and H1 at the level of nucleosome binding.     Description: We report the design, synthesis, and assembly of the 1.08-mega-base pair Mycoplasma mycoides JCVI-syn1.0 genome starting from digitized genome sequence information and its transplantation into a M. capricolum recipient cell to create new M. mycoides cells that are controlled only by the synthetic chromosome. The only DNA in the cells is the designed synthetic DNA sequence, including "watermark" sequences and other designed gene deletions and polymorphisms, and mutations acquired during the building process.     Description: Quantum metrology uses quantum entanglement--correlations in the properties of microscopic systems--to improve the statistical precision of physical measurements. When measuring a signal, such as the phase shift of a light beam or an atomic state, a prominent limitation to achievable precision arises from the noise associated with the counting of uncorrelated probe particles. This noise, commonly referred to as shot noise or projection noise, gives rise to the standard quantum limit (SQL) to phase resolution. However, it can be mitigated down to the fundamental Heisenberg limit by entangling the probe particles. Despite considerable experimental progress in a variety of physical systems, a question that persists is whether these methods can achieve performance levels that compare favourably with optimized conventional (non-entangled) systems. Here we demonstrate an approach that achieves unprecedented levels of metrological improvement using half a million (87)Rb atoms in their 'clock' states. The ensemble is 20.1 +/- 0.3 decibels (100-fold) spin-squeezed via an optical-cavity-based measurement. We directly resolve small microwave-induced rotations 18.5 +/- 0.3 decibels (70-fold) beyond the SQL. The single-shot phase resolution of 147 microradians achieved by the apparatus is better than that achieved by the best engineered cold atom sensors despite lower atom numbers. We infer entanglement of more than 680 +/- 35 particles in the atomic ensemble. Applications include atomic clocks, inertial sensors, and fundamental physics experiments such as tests of general relativity or searches for electron electric dipole moment.     Notes: In the title compound, C4H10NO3+.C2HO4−, the DL-threonine molecule exists as a cation and the oxalic acid molecule in the mono-ionized state. The molecules aggregate into infinite parallel layers which extend along the diagonal of the ac plane. These layers have no hydrogen-bonded interactions between them, only van der Waals interactions. The semi-oxalate ion deviates far from planarity. No classic head-to-tail hydrogen bonds are observed.

    Notes: In the title compound, [ZnCl2(C5H11NO2)2], the Zn atom lies on the twofold axis within the unit cell, with two symmetrically related valine molecules coordinating to it as ligands. The observed asymmetry of the carboxylate group is most likely a result of the participation of only one of the carboxyl O atoms in the coordination environment. Zinc has a distorted tetrahedral environment with twofold-related Cl atoms and two carboxyl O atoms, one each from the twofold-related valine molecules in the asymmetric unit.
