    Description: Compiled marine radiocarbon data from the global ocean, derived from planktonic/benthic foraminifera and corals, spanning the last deglaciation, with associated calendar ages that are independently derived and/or are consistent with the Marine20 radiocarbon calibration curve. The data have been screened and include data flags pertaining to anomalous values (e.g. negative offsets relative to the contemporary atmosphere), low sedimentation rates 〈2 cm/kyr, and/or deviations from dominant regional-temporal trends. The data are further grouped by ocean basin, and according to their associated calendar ages as belonging to a succession of time slices across the last deglaciation: the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1), the Bolling-Allerod (BA), the Younger Dryas, the Early Holocene (7-11ka BP), and the late Holocene (〈6 ka BP).

    Description: Compiled marine radiocarbon data from the global ocean, derived from planktonic/benthic foraminifera and corals, spanning the last deglaciation, with associated calendar ages that are independently derived and/or are consistent with the Marine20 radiocarbon calibration curve. The data have been screened and include data flags pertaining to anomalous values (e.g. negative offsets relative to the contemporary atmosphere), low sedimentation rates 〈2 cm/kyr, and/or deviations from dominant regional-temporal trends. The data are further grouped by ocean basin, and according to their associated calendar ages as belonging to a succession of time slices across the last deglaciation: the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1), the Bolling-Allerod (BA), the Younger Dryas, the Early Holocene (7-11ka BP), and the late Holocene (〈6 ka BP).

    Description: Lagrangian forward and backward models are introduced into a coarse-grid ocean global circulation model to trace the ventilation routes of the deep North Pacific Ocean. The random walk aspect in the Lagrangian model is dictated by a rotated isopycnal diffusivity tensor in the circulation model, and the effect of diffusion is explicitly resolved by means of stochastic terms in the Lagrangian model. The analogy between the probability distribution of a Lagrangian model with Green’s function of an Eulerian tracer transport equation is established. The estimated first- and last-passage time density of the deep North Pacific using both the Eulerian and the Lagrangian models ensured that the Lagrangian pathways and their ensemble statistics are consistent with the Eulerian tracer transport and its adjoint model. Moreover, the sample pathways of the ventilated mass fractions of the deep North Pacific particles to and from the ocean surface are studied.

    Description: Climate-driven depletion of ocean oxygen strongly impacts the global cycles of carbon and nutrients as well as the survival of many animal species. One of the main uncertainties in predicting changes to marine oxygen levels is the regulation of the biological respiration demand associated with the biological pump. Derived from the Redfield ratio, the molar ratio of oxygen to organic carbon consumed during respiration (i.e., the respiration quotient, r−O2:C) is consistently assumed constant but rarely, if ever, measured. Using a prognostic Earth system model, we show that a 0.1 increase in the respiration quotient from 1.0 leads to a 2.3% decline in global oxygen, a large expansion of low-oxygen zones, additional water column denitrification of 38 Tg N/y, and the loss of fixed nitrogen and carbon production in the ocean. We then present direct chemical measurements of r−O2:C using a Pacific Ocean meridional transect crossing all major surface biome types. The observed r−O2:C has a positive correlation with temperature, and regional mean values differ significantly from Redfield proportions. Finally, an independent global inverse model analysis constrained with nutrients, oxygen, and carbon concentrations supports a positive temperature dependence of r−O2:C in exported organic matter. We provide evidence against the common assumption of a static biological link between the respiration of organic carbon and the consumption of oxygen. Furthermore, the model simulations suggest that a changing respiration quotient will impact multiple biogeochemical cycles and that future warming can lead to more intense deoxygenation than previously anticipated.
