Notes: For a dilute solution of Hookean dumbbells, the consistent averaging and Gaussian approximations for the hydrodynamic interaction have recently been shown to lead to an anisotropic translational diffusion tensor, which is shear rate dependent in steady shear flow. These properties of the diffusion tensor arise because of the nature of the average friction experienced by the dumbbell as it translates through the solvent. In this paper, the relationship between the average friction on the dumbbell and the spatial distribution of mass about the center of the dumbbell is examined. It is found that the anisotropic and flow rate dependent distribution of mass caused by the solvent flow field is responsible for the average friction having the same properties.

Notes: We develop a simple computational tool for SU(3) analogous to Bargmann's calculus for SU(2). Crucial new inputs are (i) explicit representation of the Gelfand–Zetlin basis in terms of polynomials in four variables and positive or negative integral powers of a fifth variable, (ii) an auxiliary Gaussian measure with respect to which the Gelfand–Zetlin states are orthogonal but not normalized, (iii) simple generating functions for generating all basis states and also all invariants. As an illustration of our techniques, an algebraic formula for the Clebsch–Gordan coefficients is obtained for the first time. This involves only Gaussian integrations. Thus SU(3) is made as accessible for computations as SU(2) is. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It is shown that the Gelfand-Weyl pattern for SU(3) can be uniquely expressed in terms of four non-negative and one positive or negative free integers. This provides an optimal, albeit non-linear, boson calculus for SU(3) in terms of four harmonic oscillators and one planar rotor. (By optimal it is meant that every irreducible representation is obtained once and once only.) Our techniques can be generalized to other groups. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Vicia sativa (L.) was subjected to pre-emergence treatments of alachlor, fluchloralin, nitrofen and prometryne. A study of stomatal index was made by collecting leaves from the fourth and fifth nodes of plants. Nitrofen and prometryne, although increasing the number of epidermal cells and stomata per unit area, did not lead to changes in the stomal index compared to control values. Alachlor and fluchloralin reduced the stomatal index greatly because the density of epidermal cells was increased more than the density of stomata. The results are discussed. Die Wirkung einiger Herbizide auf die Epidermis von Vicia sativa (L.)Alachlor, Fluchloralin, Stickstoff und Prometryn wurden vor dem Auflaufen von Vicia sativa (L.) appliziert. Um den Stomataindex festzustellen, wurden Blätter vom 4 und 5 Nodium entnommen. Die Stickstoff- und Prometrynbehandlungen bewirkten zwar eine Zunahme der Epidermiszellen und der Stomata je Flächeneinheit, hatten aber im Vergleich zur Kontrolle keine Veränderungen des Slomataindex zur Folge. Alachlor und Fluchloralin verkleinerten den Stomataindex sehr stark, da die Dichte der Epidermiszellen stärker zunahm als die Dichte der Stomata. Die Ergebnisse werden diskutiert.

Notes: It is generally acknowledged that organisations need to be innovative in order to survive and prosper. Some advocates of total quality management (TQM) have suggested that it provides the necessary platform for inculcating innovation in organisations. Intuitively, TQM components involving sound and effective practices on leadership, customer focus, relations with suppliers, employee inter-relationships, information/communication systems and management of processes and products do appear to enable organisations develop culture of innovation. A robust TQM-innovation relationship appears to be conceptually plausible, but little empirical evidence has so far been offered to support this proposition. In this paper, this relationship is explored. Empirical data were taken from a survey of 418 Australian manufacturing organisations. Structural equation modelling technique was used for statistical analysis. Results show that there is insufficient statistical evidence to suggest that TQM is related to innovation. There could well be a more complex relationship between these concepts.
