    Notes: Abstract Object-oriented principles have introduced several useful concepts for developing complex software systems. As a result, several methodologies have been suggested for the overall design of software systems based on these concepts. Methodologies and frameworks for designing objects that are to be part of the software systems are currently lacking. This paper proposes anobject design framework andmethodology, which utilizes the object-oriented concepts, for planning, organizing and designing structural engineering design objects. Design objects in an integrated structural engineering system are complex and often related to each other in various different ways. The paper also identifies several important relationships among structural engineering design objects. These relationships serve as communication channels through wich design objects send messages to and receive responses from each other. Several examples, drawn from reinforced concrete structures, will be presented to demonstrate the object design methodology and to illustrate how the framework is effective in reducing the complexity of design objects in an integrated structural engineering system.

    Notes: A tough hypereutectic high chromium white iron has been developed by considering thealloy as a double in-situ fibrous composite and applying the principles of composite theory. Theeutectic in the ternary Fe-Cr-C system solidifies as M7C3 carbide rods of irregular hexagonal crosssection in a matrix of austenite. The carbide rods are intermittently joined together with nomisorientation at the joint. The colonies (eutectic grains) of a 27%Cr alloy solidify with a flat solid– liquid interface. In hypereutectic high chromium white irons the primary carbide solidifies assingle crystal rods with no branching. Depending on the thermal conditions in the mould theprimary carbides are nucleated only on the mould surface, or repeatedly at the solid – liquidinterface. In 27% Cr, 4.5%C hypereutectic alloys, the as-solidified microstructure is one of longparallel aligned primary carbides in a eutectic matrix of carbide rods in austenite, or short randomlyorientated primary carbides in a eutectic matrix. In either case the microstructure can be describedas a double in-situ fibrous composite. The application of composite theory has resulted inhypereutectic high chromium white iron castings with improved fracture toughness similar to thatof heat-treated alloy steel but with superior wear resistance

    Notes: Summary The number of proliferated seed cones (PSc) and proliferated pollen cones (PPc) borne by young plantation-grown Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P. was established for trees aged 9–17 years from seed. A description and composition of a range of morphological forms of proliferations were produced. Through paired-comparison analyses, compositions of PSc and PPc were compared to those of nearby non-proliferated cones or to vegetative shoots. Between 41% and 88% of trees of different ages that bore seed cones also bore some PSc; 17–58% with pollen cones also had PPc. The total number of PSc represented 2.3–20% of total numbers of seed cones and PSc at each tree age; PPc represented 1.5–5.8% of the total. Proliferated seed cones were greatly diversified in forms ranging from only a few distal needle-like bracts to mainly needles with a few needle-like bracts. A similar range of diversity existed for PPc. Proliferations involving production of distal needles went on to produce a terminal bud. The diversity of morphological forms and their variable occurrence encountered in this study indicate that the developmental pathway of an apical meristem, although defined somewhat by differentiation, has a degree of flexibility. Manifestation of this developmental flexibility throughout a wild population indicates that this phenomenon may be a normal event in P. mariana.

    Notes: Summary Shoot development was investigated on branches of Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch trees growing in their 8th year in two plantations and in a natural stand approximately 12 years old. Expansion of throughout-crown series of short and long shoots was measured weekly, and later colour change and natural fall of leaves were assessed. Similar shoots were collected at intervals and dissected, the long shoots by 25-leaf segments. Leaf area and weight, as well as time of bud formation, were determined. Increasing acropetal trends were evident in time to bud burst: duration of short-shoot leaf-cluster expansion; size of leaf clusters and number, area and weight of leaves per cluster; duration and rate of long-shoot elongation; number, area and weight of leaves on long shoots; time to terminal-bud formation on long shoots. Along each long shoot, stem and leaf elongation and lateral-axis formation progressed acropetally. Lateral axes were most numerous on second to fourth 25-leaf segments. On longer shoots, some axes in middle segments developed as sylleptic short shoots rather than as lateral buds. Leaves of short shoots and basal leaves on long shoots turned yellow and abscissed sooner than axial leaves on long shoots. Colour change and loss among axial leaves were acropetal along shoots and up the crown. Thus, last-formed leaves, in axils of some of which lastformed lateral buds occurred, were held longest.

    Notes: Summary Shoot systems developed over 3 successive years were investigated on 55 understorey Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. trees. Paired comparisons of preformed-leaf content of terminal buds and numbers of leaves produced on new shoots showed that neoformed leaves were produced in large numbers. Parent-shoot character was not useful in predicting numbers of preformed leaves, was better related to total leaves produced, but left the majority of the variation unexplained. This reflected the capacity of any terminal bud to produce a shoot with more or less neoformation, depending on conditions for growth. All shoots over 6 cm long produced sylleptic shoots that bore from two to many leaves and were arranged in a mesitonic pattern along the parent. Some of the longer sylleptic shoots produced lateral buds or second-order sylleptic shoots. Monopodial second-year extensions of sylleptic-shoot axes followed an acrotonic pattern, as did proleptic shoots from the few lateral buds borne on the parent shoots. Such lateral buds were more frequent on shorter parent shoots: they typically occurred near the proximal and distal ends. Duration of shoot extension was positively correlated with shoot length: terminal buds became evident as shoot extension neared cessation.

    Notes: Summary Pattern of change in leaf character was assessed along the length and around the circumference of Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. shoots of different length classes. Leaf size decreased, and number of leaves per unit length of shoot increased, with decrease in shoot length. Acropetally along the shoots, lamina length and width decreased, relative petiole length increased, apices became more pointed, and leaf margins bore more teeth. Around the shoot, from upper to side, and to lower surfaces, leaf size and number of marginal teeth in the proximal halves of leaves increased. These patterns were related both to production of preformed versus neoformed leaves, though their separation was indistinct, and to secondary orientation of leaves by twisting in their petiolar regions into two major bi-lateral ranks. An additional minor rank occurred along the upper surfaces of the shoots where secondary orientation of the leaves was minimal. Surface features of leaves did not differ in any obvious manner. Leaves on sylleptic shoots, which by definition were all neoformed, exhibited similar patterns, but were generally smaller than those on their parent shoots.

    Notes: Abstract The use of formal data bases management systems is becoming increasingly necessary in computer programs for structural engineering. This paper briefly reviews data base requirements and the organization of integrated computer program networks and identifies a need for hierarchical data base management in computer programs for structural analysis. The nature of the data hierarchy is illustrated with reference to a building that has been analyzed by using substructure techniques. The organization and features of the hiearchical data base manager STRATA are then described. STRATA has been developed specifically for use in structural analysis.

The data base is the most critical part of the system. This article proposes a design for such a data base. The steps involved in data base, design are first reviewed, and several requirements for an effective structural engineering data base system are identified. A data base design based on a “component-connection” abstraction model and the object-oriented data model is then presented.
