    Notes: Abstract In this paper, the conception of fractal geometry derived from geometric inversion is introduced. A ramified self-inverse fractal with symmetry and a self-inverse fractal dust set are constructed. The authors extend the conception of the fractal osculation and propose a new notion—fractal envelope. Finally, two examples of self-inverse fractal (soap and egg) are given.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, the author deduces an approximate solution of nonlinear influence function in rate form for two-dimensional elastic problems on current configuration by the method of co-moving coordinate system. Here BEM formulation of large deformation based on Chen's theory[I] is given. The computational processes of nonlinear boundary integral equation is discussed. The author also compiles a nonlinear computing program NBEM. Numerical examples show that the results presented here is available to the solution of engineering problems.

    Notes: Two novel square-planar palladium chelating liquid crystals, bis(p-n-(l-undecenoxyphenyl-3-dodecyloxyphenyl)-propane-1,3-dionato)palladium(II) (Pd-C11-C12) and bis(1,3-di(p-n-tetradecyloxphenyl)-propane-1,3-dionato) palladium (II) (Pd-C14-C14) have been synthesized. Moreover, the copper chelating liquid crystal bis(p-n-(l-undecynoxylphenyl-3-dodecyloxylphenyl)-propane-1,3-dionate)copper (II) (Cu-Cu11-C12) has been synthesized by heterogeneous ligand-exchange reaction. These β-diketone metal chelates have been characterized by elementary analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and temperature-variable IR. It was found that these chelates were discotic lamellar-(DL) mesophase liquid crystals. In particular, the temperature-variable IR study indicates that the central chelating ring and the surrounding benzene rings would form a co-planar conjugated structure in the liquid crystalline (LC) state.

    Description: ABSTRACT The Pacific-Japan (PJ) pattern affects interannual variability in the East Asian and western North Pacific (WNP) summer monsoons. This teleconnection pattern is characterized by a meridional dipole of anomalous circulation and precipitation between the tropical WNP and the midlatitudes. This study develops a long index of the PJ pattern using station-based atmospheric pressure data to track the PJ variability from 1897 to 2013. This index is correlated with a wide array of climate variables including air temperature, precipitation, Yangtze River flow, Japanese rice yield and the occurrence of tropical cyclones over the WNP (especially those that make landfall on the Chinese and Korean coast). For the recent three decades, the PJ index reproduces well-known correlations with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the preceding boreal winter and Indian Ocean temperature in the concurrent summer. For the 117-year period, this ENSO-PJ relationship varies on interdecadal time scales, with low correlations in the 1920s and from the 1940s to 1970s, and recurrences of significant correlations at the beginning of the 20th century and the 1930s. In accordance with the modulation, the magnitude and regional climate effect of the PJ variability have changed. These results highlight the importance of interdecadal modulations of climate anomalies in the summer WNP and the need of long-term observations to study such modulations.

    Description: Fast z-pinch is a very efficient way of converting electromagnetic energy to radiation. With an 8-10 MA current on primary test stand facility, about 1 MJ electromagnetic energy is delivered to vacuum chamber, which heats z-pinch plasma to radiate soft x-ray. To develop a pulsed high power x-ray source, we studied the applicability of diagnosing x-ray power from tungsten wire array z-pinch with a flat spectral response x-ray diode (FSR-XRD). The detector was originally developed to diagnose radiation of a hohlraum in SG-III prototype laser facility. It utilized a gold cathode XRD and a specially configured compound gold filter to yield a nearly flat spectral response in photon energy range of 0.1-4 keV. In practice, it was critical to avoid surface contamination of gold cathode. It is illustrated that an exposure of an XRD to multiple shots caused a significant change of response. Thus, in diagnosing x-ray power and energy, we used each XRD in only one shot after calibration. In a shot serial, output of FSR-XRD was compared with output of a nickel bolometer. In these shots, the outputs agreed with each other within their uncertainties which were about 12% for FSR-XRD and about 15% for bolometer. Moreover, the ratios between the FSR-XRD and the bolometer among different shots were explored. In 8 shots, the standard deviation of the ratio was 6%. It is comparable to XRD response change of 7%.

    Description: Sediment cores taken from different areas of the mesotrophic Lake Erhai were analysed to investigate the vertical distribution of bacterial community composition (BCC), as well as physicochemical parameters. PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), stable carbon isotope (δ 13 C), C/N atomic ratio and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to explore the relationships between the succession of bacterial communities and environmental variables, emphasising changes in the sources of organic matter (OM). The BCC in natural environments was characterised by DGGE of the 16S rRNA gene with subsequent sequencing of bands of interest. The CCA revealed that the depth-related variation in sediment bacterial communities in different areas of the lake was significantly influenced by varying environmental factors. The OM source, however, played an important role in structuring BCC at all sites. The DGGE banding patterns revealed that the abundance of Deltaproteobacteria decreased with accompanying elevated levels of C4 plant-derived organic carbon. The sequencing of DGGE bands suggested that the majority of the sequences were affiliated with common phylogenetic groups in lake sediments: Chloroflexi, Deltaproteobacteria and Firmicutes . Betaproteobacteria detected in our study appeared as a prominent phylotype in the upper sediment. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index of bacterial communities was directly affected by the OM source. Constant OM sources resulted in a stable higher diversity of bacterial communities and broader enzymatic capabilities to access OM. We conclude that the differences in the diversity of bacterial communities in sediments differing in their sources of OM were related to environmental variables ( e.g . water level, river runoff and terrestrial vegetation composition). Our study provided insights into the relationships between natural BCC and OM sources, facilitating a better understanding of microbial community structure in lake sediment.

    Description: A Riesz difference is defined by the use of the Riemann–Liouville differences on time scales. Then the definition is considered for discrete fractional modelling. A lattice fractional equation method is proposed among which the space variable is defined on discrete domains. Finite memory effects are introduced into the lattice system and the numerical formulae are given. Adomian decomposition method is adopted to solve the fractional partial difference equations numerically.

But development of reliable regional climate projections for climate change mitigation and adaptation remains challenging. The presence of anthropogenic aerosols, which are highly variable in space and time, is thought to induce spatial patterns of climate response that are distinct from those of well-mixed greenhouse gases. Using CMIP5 climate simulations that consider aerosols and greenhouse gases separately, we show that regional responses to changes in greenhouse gases and aerosols are similar over the ocean, as reflected in similar spatial patterns of ocean temperature and precipitation. This similarity suggests that the climate response to radiative changes is relatively insensitive to the spatial distribution of these changes. Although anthropogenic aerosols are largely confined to the Northern Hemisphere, simulations that include aerosol forcing predict decreases in temperature and westerly wind speed that reach the pristine Southern Hemisphere oceans. Over land, the climate response to aerosol forcing is more localized, but larger scale spatial patterns are also evident. We suggest that the climate responses induced by greenhouse gases and aerosols share key ocean–atmosphere feedbacks, leading to a qualitative resemblance in spatial distribution.

    Description: Background: Recent studies have shown that some glycosyltransferases are involved in the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The objective of this study was to explore the effect and mechanism of glycosyltransferase GLT8D2 on fatty liver. Methods: Rat model of NAFLD was established by induction with high-fat-diet. The GLT8D2 expression in rat liver was examined using immunohistochemistry. Oil Red O staining and triglyceride assay were used to measure the effect of abnormal GLT8D2 expression on lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells. The expression levels of lipid metabolism-related key molecules, namely sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), stearoyl-coA desaturase (SCD), carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT1) and microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP), in HepG2 cells with abnormal GLT8D2 expression were determined by western blot analyses. Results: The expression of GLT8D2 was higher in the liver of rats with NAFLD than in the control rats, and GLT8D2 was mainly located around lipid droplets in hepatocytes. GLT8D2 expression increased in steatosis HepG2 cells compared with that in normal HepG2 cells. GLT8D2 positively regulated lipid droplet accumulation and triglyceride content in HepG2 cells. Upregulation or knockdown of GLT8D2 had no effect on the expressions of SREBP-1c, SCD or CPT-1 proteins in HepG2 cells. However, GLT8D2 expression negatively regulated the expression of MTP protein in HepG2 cells. Conclusion: GLT8D2 participated in NAFLD pathogenesis possibly by negatively regulating MTP expression. Specific inhibition of GLT8D2 via an antagonistic strategy could provide a potential candidate approach for treatment of NAFLD.
