    Abstract: This open access book will contribute to a more nuanced debate around seed system resilience that goes beyond the dominant dichotomous conceptualization of seed governance often characterized as traditional vs modern, subsistence vs commercial, or local vs global. While reflecting on the expanding oligopoly in the current seed system, the authors argue that such classifications limit our ability to critically reflect on and acknowledge the diverse approaches through which seed governance is practiced around the world, at various scales, creating a mosaic of dynamic complementarities and autonomies. The authors also highlight the importance of this much needed dialogue through case studies of seed governance approaches and practices found in and around Japan. .

    Description: The acceleration of ecological crises has driven a growing body of thinking on sustainability transitions. Agroecology is being promoted as an approach that can address multiple crises in the food system while addressing climate change and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. Beyond the more technical definition as, “the ecology of food systems”, agroecology has a fundamentally political dimension. It is based on an aspiration towards autonomy or the agency of networks of producers and citizens to self-organize for sustainability and social justice. In this article, we use the multi-level perspective (MLP) to examine agroecology transformations. Although the MLP has been helpful in conceptualizing historic transitions, there is a need to better understand: (a) the role of and potential to self-organize in the context of power in the dominant regime, and (b) how to shift to bottom-up forms of governance—a weak point in the literature. Our review analyzes the enabling and disabling conditions that shape agroecology transformations and the ability of communities to self-organize. We develop the notion of ‘domains of transformation’ as overlapping and interconnected interfaces between agroecology and the incumbent dominant regime. We present six critical domains that are important in agroecological transformations: access to natural ecosystems; knowledge and culture; systems of exchange; networks; discourse; and gender and equity. The article focuses on the dynamics of power and governance, arguing that a shift from top down technocratic approaches to bottom up forms of governance based on community-self organization across these domains has the most potential for enabling transformation for sustainability and social justice.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary In order to meet its sexual partner, Zabrotes subfasciatus must rely on the olfactory signals emitted either by the female or the male insect. The attractiveness of male and female odours were therefore studied and compared in an olfactometer. The behaviour of virgin and inseminated females and males, left in contact with the host plant's seeds or not, was studied in terms of the age of the imagos. In all cases examined, male odours did not attract female insects. Virgin females kept without seeds of the host plant did not attract males. On the other hand, the odour of virgin females left in contact with bean seeds significantly attracted virgin males. The females' attractive power varied according to their age: older females released a chemical cue that was more attractive for the males. Emission of the sex-pheromone stops after insemination of the females but begins again after a certain period of time. Results are discussed in terms of what is known on the reproductive regulation of this bruchid.
    Notes: Abstract Pour rechercher son partenaire sexuel Zabrotes subfasciatus doit utiliser les signaux olfactifs émis soit par les mâles ou par les femelles. Le pouvoir attractif de l'odeur des mâles et des femelles sont donc étudiés et comparés par olfactométrie. Le comportement de mâles et de femelles vierges et inséminées, mis en contact des graines de la plante hôte ou non, est observé en fonction de l'âge des imagos. En aucun cas, les odeurs des mâles n'exercent une attraction sur les femelles. Les femelles vierges en absence de graines de haricot (Phaseolus vulgaris) n'exercent pas d'attraction sur les mâles vierges. Par contre les odeurs des femelles vierges mises en contact avec les graines de haricot sont très attractives pour les mâles vierges et varie en fonction de l'âge: il est plus affirmé chez les femelles plus âgées. L'émission de la phéromone sexuelle est interrompue après l'insémination des femelles mais reprend au bout d'un certain temps après celle-ci.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Des EAG sont enregistrés chez les mâles de Zabrotes subfasciatus en réponse à l'odeur du partenaire sexuel. Les insectes femelles, utilisés dans les expériences sont d'âges différents, vierges et mis en présence ou non de graines de la plante-hôte, Phaseolus vulgaris. Les odeurs des femelles vierges mises en absence des graines n'évoquent pas de réponses électroantennographiques chez les mâles vierges — tout au moins tant qu'elles n'ont pas atteint un âge relativement avancé (6 jours environ). Par contre, le contact avec les graines de la plante-hôte favorise une émission plus précoce de la phéromone sexuelle perçue par les antennes des mâles. Ceci nous fait supposer que l'attractivité sexuelle des femelles est probablement corrélée à la vitellogenèse, elle-même très dépendante de la stimulation par la plante-hôte chez cet insecte spécialiste.
    Notes: Abstract Odours of female Zabrotes subfasciatus Boh, elicit strong electroantennogram (EAG) responses in their sexual partners. Virgin female insects used in experiments were of different ages and given seeds, or not, of the host plant, Phaseolus vulgaris L. The odours of females which did not get host plant seeds, do not elicit EAG responses in virgin males, until they are at least 6 days old. On the other hand, the release of the sex pheromone as perceived by the male antennae, occurs earlier in the life of females when they are in contact with the host plant's seeds. This suggests that the sexual attractiveness of the females of this specialist insect is probably closely correlated with vitellogenesis. The latter is indeed highly dependent on host plant stimulation.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé L'activité reproductrice d'un insecte spécialiste (Zabrotes subfasciatus) est étudiée sur deux lots d'individus provenant de la même zone. Le premier a été récolté sur une plante hôte sauvage de l'insecte, Phaseolus lunatus L., et le deuxième sur une plante hôte cultivée, P. vulgaris L. La fécondité, la production ovarienne et les préférences d'oviposition des femelles en présence de graines de P. lunatus ou de P. vulgaris ou en présence de graines des deux plantes hôtes sont analysées séparément pour chaque lot. En présence de graines de l'une ou de l'autre plante hôte (absence de choix du lieu de ponte) les fécondités et productions ovariennes des femelles de chacun des lots sont comparables. Par contre, lorsqu'on leur donne le choix de pondre sur les deux plantes hôtes, les femelles pondent préférentiellement sur P. vulgaris. Le substrat utilisé pour le développement larvaire n'influence pas le choix du lieu de ponte. Il n'y a donc pas d'obstacle physiologique ou comportemental empêchant Z. subfasciatus de se reproduire sur ces deux plantes hôtes, dans le contexte écologique d'où proviennent les insectes étudiés ici.
    Notes: Abstract The reproductive activity of a specialist bruchid (Zabrotes subfasciatus Boh., Coleoptera) was studied in two beetle stocks obtained from the same area. The first was harvested on the insect's wild host plant, Phaseolus lunatus L. The second was collected on a cultivated host plant, P. vulgaris L. Within each of the two insect stocks, fecundities and ovarian productions were similar whether females were offered seeds of the host plant on which they completed their larval development or an alternative host. When given the choice of host plants, females of both stockś oviposited preferentially on P. vulgaris. The substrate used for larval development did not influence the choice of subsequent oviposition sites. There appears to be no behavioural or physiological barriers preventing a single population of Z. subfasciatus from reproducing on both wild and cultivated host plants where they grow together.

    Description: Contestations over knowledge – and who controls its production – are a key focus of social movements and other actors that promote food sovereignty, agroecology and biocultural diversity. This book critically examines the kinds of knowledge and ways of knowing needed for food sovereignty, agroecology and biocultural diversity. ‘Food sovereignty’ is understood here as a transformative process that seeks to recreate the democratic realm and regenerate a diversity of autonomous food systems based on agroecology, biocultural diversity, equity, social justice and ecological sustainability. It is shown that alternatives to the current model of development require radically different knowledges and epistemologies from those on offer today in mainstream institutions (including universities, policy think tanks and donor organizations). To achieve food sovereignty, agroecology and biocultural diversity, there is a need to re-imagine and construct knowledge for diversity, decentralisation, dynamic adaptation and democracy. The authors critically explore the changes in organizations, research paradigms and professional practice that could help transform and co-create knowledge for a new modernity based on plural definitions of wellbeing. Particular attention is given to institutional, pedagogical and methodological innovations that can enhance cognitive justice by giving hitherto excluded citizens more power and agency in the construction of knowledge. The book thus contributes to the democratization of knowledge and power in the domain of food, environment and society.
