    Notes: The oscillation of ion bunches around a strongly negative grid in a double plasma device is studied with one–dimensional particle–in–cell simulation. The system exhibits feedback amplified virtual anode oscillations in the target chamber. The undriven system is shown to perform relaxation processes which can be described by the van der Pol equation for high nonlinearity. The periodically driven system exhibits nonlinear phenomena like mode locking and periodic pulling, which are in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions for the driven van der Pol oscillator. For large driver amplitudes period doubling and weak chaos are found. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experimental measurements of time series and frequency spectra characterize a periodic nonlinear interaction between pairs of self-excited, propagating, ionization waves simultaneously present in the positive column of a neon glow discharge. No periodically varying external driving force is applied. The interaction is the spatio-temporal extension of the previously established temporal periodic pulling process, the incomplete entrainment of a driven nonlinear oscillator. The particular mode playing the role of the driving perturbation in the interaction can be selected and is identified by inspection of the asymmetric, multisideband spectrum of light fluctuations, which reflect the system's dynamics. A comparison between the spatio-temporal and temporal periodic pulling shows that the former is associated with a relatively strong driving force. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The horizontal and vertical oscillation modes of monolayer plasma crystal are investigated and are related to dust–dust and dust-plasma interactions. It is found that the dust particles in the plasma sheath excited by a biased wire show parametric resonances. This parametric resonance is identified as the reason for the observed "sublimation" transition of the plasma crystal from a solid to a gaslike state. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An experimental study of coherent structures in the electrostatic turbulence observed in a steady-state operated, magnetized, cylindrical low-β argon plasma is presented. The conditional averaging technique is used to detect and to characterize large-scale conditional structures. The results of conditional averaging of a single drift wave mode are consistent with theoretical predictions and the data obtained by an azimuthal array of 64 Langmuir probes. In the turbulent regime, large monopole structures in the density fluctuations are identified, which develop by particle trapping due to associated potential structures. These structures lead to transport of particles across magnetic field lines, as evident from the trajectory of the structures. The comparison of the dynamics of conditional structures and unaveraged spatiotemporal structures suggests that they are of the same origin. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In a periodically driven thermionic diode period doubling cascades, period adding and low-dimensional chaos are found. Some dynamical properties of the driven discharge are comparable to strongly driven diode resonant circuits. The chaotic oscillations of the discharge current are controlled using occasional proportional feedback and an improved difference feedback method. Feedback constants are predetermined by the local analysis of the first return map. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experiments are reported on oscillations that arise in a double plasma device when plasma production is restricted to the source chamber and the separating grid between the two chambers is biased negatively. The free oscillating system shows periodic pulling which is a typical behavior of driven van der Pol type oscillators. The second interacting frequency is identified to be half the ion plasma frequency at the sheath edge on the source side. With the help of particle in cell simulations the concept of virtual anode oscillations (VAO's) as the underlying oscillation mechanism is investigated and the van der Pol character of these is revealed. When applied to the experimental conditions, the VAO-model predicts correct oscillation frequencies. It gives a new interpretation of the scaling of these with plasma density and grid bias, and is compatible with earlier findings. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Strongly nonlinear relaxation oscillations of discharge current and plasma potential are investigated in a magnetized thermionic plasma discharge. The quasi-one-dimensional electron motion allows a direct comparison with one-dimensional models and computer simulations. Two different stable discharge modes can be established, the low-current space charge limited and the high-current temperature limited mode. Time resolved probe measurements of the plasma potential distribution demonstrate that the current oscillations result from a strongly nonlinear instability of the potential structure in the weak current discharge mode. This confirms the model based on particle-in-cell simulations [F. Greiner et al., Phys. Plasmas 2, 1810 (1995)]. The oscillation process consists of three distinct phases. The sequence of events and the observed parameter dependencies of the oscillation frequency is in accordance with the model. The periodically driven system shows the characteristic behavior of nonlinear oscillators: quasiperiodicity, mode-locking, and period doubling sequences towards chaos. It is possible to link the complex dynamical behavior to the details of the trigger mechanism that are revealed by the simulation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The discharge modes of a thermionic low pressure discharge (p〈1Pa) are investigated with the one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation codes PDP1 and XPDP1 [C. K. Birdsall, IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 19, 65 (1991)]. The simulation results provide a model approach for stable discharge modes, hysteresis, and for nonlinear relaxation-oscillations. During this potential-relaxation instability, nonlinear structures, e.g. electron holes and double layers, are observed. A Pierce–Buneman-mode is suggested as a trigger mechanism for the onset of the instability. The detailed oscillation process can be subdivided into three distinct phases: expansion phase, double layer phase, and relaxation phase. This allows one to explain the parameter dependencies of the oscillation frequency. For a periodically driven discharge, mode-locking in a period-2 state is found and explained by the model. The mode-locking phenomenon is studied systematically. The results of the simulations are well confirmed by experimental observations presented in Part II of this paper [T. Klinger et al., Phys. Plasmas 2, 1822 (1995)]. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A probe array with 64 azimuthally arranged Langmuir probes is presented as a new diagnostic tool for the investigation of drift waves. A parallel data acquisition system provides full spatio-temporal data of azimuthally propagating waves. For both regular and turbulent states of current-driven drift waves, the information provided by such space-time patterns is compared with results obtained from conventional two-point correlation methods. The probe array allows one to directly estimate the time-averaged wave number spectrum. In a turbulent state, the spectrum yields to a power law of S(k)∝k−3.6±0.1. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A computer controlled acquisition and evaluation system for electrostatic probes is presented. Fully automatic evaluation of the probe characteristics yields electron temperature, plasma potential, and density during the recording. Two-dimensional probe positioning is accomplished with stepping motors. The system is characterized by 12-bit probe current resolution and extremely wide probe voltage range (±130 V). It is tested in a collisionless argon magnetoplasma and compared to standard wave diagnostic techniques for magnetized plasmas, i.e., the resonance cone technique. The influence of the probe radius on the electron current in a magnetized plasma is studied experimentally. The two techniques yield identical density and temperature values within 20% accuracy and therefore show the reliable applicability of the automatic evaluation system.
