    Description: We inverted for laterally varying attenuation, absolute site terms, moments and apparent stress using over 460,000 Lg amplitudes recorded by the USArray for frequencies between 0.5 and 16 Hz. Corner frequencies of Wells, Nevada, aftershocks, obtained by independent analysis of coda spectral ratios, controlled the tradeoff between attenuation and stress, while independently determined moments from St. Louis University and the University of California constrained absolute levels. The quality factor, Q, was low for coastal regions and interior volcanic and tectonic areas, and high for stable regions such as the Great Plains, and Colorado and Columbia Plateaus. Q increased with frequency, and the rate of increase correlated inversely with 1-Hz Q, with highest rates in low-Q tectonic regions, and lowest rates in high-Q stable areas. Moments matched independently determined moments with a scatter of 0.2 NM. Apparent stress ranged from below 0.01 to above 1 MPa, with means of 0.1 MPa for smaller events, and 0.3 MPa for larger events. Stress was observed to be spatially coherent in some areas; for example, stress was lower along the San Andreas fault through central and northern California, and higher in the Walker Lane, and for isolated sequences such as Wells. Variance reduction relative to 1-D models ranged from 50 to 90 % depending on band and inversion method. Parameterizing frequency dependent Q as a power law produced little misfit relative to a collection of independent, multi-band Q models, and performed better than the omega-square source parameterization in that sense. Amplitude residuals showed modest, but regionally coherent patterns that varied from event to event, even between those with similar source mechanisms, indicating a combination of focal mechanism, and near source propagation effects played a role. An exception was the Wells mainshock, which produced dramatic amplitude patterns due to its directivity, and was thus excluded from the inversions. The 2-D Q plus absolute site models can be used for high accuracy, broad area source spectra, magnitude and yield estimation, and, in combination with models for all regional phases, can be used to improve discrimination, in particular for intermediate bands that allow coverage to be extended beyond that available for high frequency P-to-S discriminants.

    Description: The aim of this study is to improve our knowledge of the attenuation structure in the Southern Apennines using a new amplitude ratio tomography method (Phillips et al., Geophys Res Lett 32(21): L21301, 2005) applied on both direct and coda envelope measurements derived from 150 events recorded by 47 stations of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia National Seismic Network (Rete Sismica Nazionale Centralizzata). The twodimensional (2-D) analysis allows us to take into account lateral crustal variations and heterogeneities of this region. Using the same event and station distribution, we also applied a simple 1-D methodology, and the performance of the 1-D and 2-D path assumptions is tested by comparing the average interstation variance for the path-corrected amplitudes using coda and direct waves. In general, coda measurement results are more stable than using direct waves when the same methodology is applied. Using the 2-D approach, we observe more stable results for both waves. However, the improvement is quite small, probably because the crustal heterogeneity is weak. This means that, for this region, the 1-D path assumption is a good approximation of the attenuation characteristics of the region. A comparison between Q tomography images obtained using direct and coda amplitudes shows similar results, consistent with the geology of the region. In fact, we observe low Q along the Apennine chain toward the Tyrrhenian Sea and higher values to the east, in correspondence with the Gargano zone that is related to the Apulia Carbonate Platform. Finally, we compared our results with the coda Q values proposed by Bianco et al. (Geophys J Int 150:10–22, 2002) for the same region. The good agreement validates our results as the authors used a completely independent methodology.

    Description: Fisk and Phillips (2013) motivated the need to constrain trade-offs among correction parameters for regional phase amplitudes to improve seismic discrimination and magnitude (yield) estimation. Using an empirical Green’s function approach to cancel path and site effects, relative spectra of direct regional phases and coda were fit for many thousands of nearby, similar earthquake pairs of different moments, to estimate reliable source corner frequencies and relative moments. Detailed comparisons demonstrated the benefit of using independent measurements of coda and direct phases to provide a large set of corroborated source terms for earthquakes throughout Eurasia. The spectra were subsequently corrected for source terms to estimate more reliable Q , geometric spreading rates, and site effects. Regression analysis was used to estimate geometric spreading rates and to establish a very consistent set of absolute moments. Here, frequency-dependent Q and site terms are examined for , Sn , , and Pn spectra. Comparisons to independent Q estimates from amplitude tomography exhibit good agreement for many paths. Large discrepancies are shown for higher frequencies, in low Q regions, and/or at the edges of the tomography grid, which significantly impact P / S discrimination. Our frequency-dependent site terms are compared with independent estimates from coda tomography, showing good agreement (even for and Pn , at many stations) but also some substantial differences.

    Description: Reliable use of regional seismic phases for discrimination and magnitude estimation requires accurate corrections. Procedures that simultaneously invert for source, attenuation ( Q ), spreading, and site parameters have trade-offs that result in large errors for source and distance corrections. This motivates our efforts to improve corrections by constraining trade-offs. Using an empirical Green’s function approach, relative spectra of regional phases are computed for nearby, similar earthquake pairs of different moments, to cancel path, site, and focal mechanism effects, giving reliable estimates of source corner frequencies and relative moments. Many such pairs are available for this analysis throughout Eurasia. A large dataset of three-component regional seismograms from Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) is assembled and processed for events listed in the preliminary determination of epicenters from 1989 to 2009. A relative Brune (1970) source model is fit to network-median relative spectra for over 46,000 pairs, corresponding to about 9400 unique events. Pseudorelative spectra are also computed from coda envelopes in 16 frequency bands. Coda is less sensitive to focal mechanism, event separation, and station coverage ( Mayeda et al. , 2007 ) but more prone to data quality issues. Results are presented with good corroboration of the moments and corner frequencies from coda and direct phases. Detailed case studies are shown to indicate the level of agreement, interstation variability, comparisons to published results based on local networks, and causes of various discrepancies between coda and direct phases. The spectra subsequently are corrected for source terms to estimate more reliable Q , geometric spreading rates, and site effects. Examples are compared to amplitude tomography results. Our estimated spreading rates are consistent with published studies, except for long distance Pn and mantle P . As important, the spreading analysis also provides a very consistent set of absolute scalar moments. Further details and comparisons to independent Q and frequency-dependent site terms are presented in a companion paper ( Fisk and Phillips, 2013 ).

    Description: The task of monitoring the Earth for nuclear explosions relies heavily on seismic data to detect, locate, and characterize suspected nuclear tests. Motivated by the need to locate suspected explosions as accurately and precisely as possible, we developed a tomographic model of the compressional wave slowness in the Earth’s mantle with primary focus on the accuracy and precision of travel-time predictions for P and Pn ray paths through the model. Path-dependent travel-time prediction uncertainties are obtained by computing the full 3D model covariance matrix and then integrating slowness variance and covariance along ray paths from source to receiver. Path-dependent travel-time prediction uncertainties reflect the amount of seismic data that was used in tomography with very low values for paths represented by abundant data in the tomographic data set and very high values for paths through portions of the model that were poorly sampled by the tomography data set. The pattern of travel-time prediction uncertainty is a direct result of the off-diagonal terms of the model covariance matrix and underscores the importance of incorporating the full model covariance matrix in the determination of travel-time prediction uncertainty. The computed pattern of uncertainty differs significantly from that of 1D distance-dependent travel-time uncertainties computed using traditional methods, which are only appropriate for use with travel times computed through 1D velocity models.

    Description: Evolutionary interactions across levels of biological organization contribute to a variety of fundamental processes including genome evolution, reproductive mode transitions, species diversification, and extinction. Evolutionary theory predicts that so-called "selfish" genetic elements will proliferate when the host effective population size ( N e ) is small, but direct tests of this prediction remain few. We analyzed the evolutionary dynamics of deletion-containing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecules, previously characterized as selfish elements, in six different natural strains of the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae allowed to undergo experimental evolution in a range of population sizes ( N = 1, 10, 100, and 1,000) for a maximum of 50 generations. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was analyzed for replicate lineages at each five-generation time point. Ten different mtDNA molecule types were observed and characterized across generations in the experimental populations. Consistent with predictions from evolutionary theory, lab lines evolved in small-population sizes (e.g., nematode N = 1) were more susceptible to accumulation of high levels of preexisting mtDNA compared with those evolved in larger populations. New mtDNA elements were observed to increase in frequency and persist across time points, but almost exclusively at small population sizes. In some cases, mtDNA levels decreased across generations when population size was large (nematode N = 1,000). Different natural strains of C. briggsae varied in their susceptibilities to mtDNA accumulation, owing in part to preexisting compensatory mtDNA alleles in some strains that prevent deletion formation. This analysis directly demonstrates that the evolutionary trajectories of mtDNA elements depend upon the population-genetic environments and molecular-genetic features of their hosts.

    Description: A 1D coda method was proposed by Mayeda et al. (2003) in order to obtain stable seismic source moment-rate spectra using narrowband coda envelope measurements. That study took advantage of the averaging nature of coda waves to derive stable amplitude measurements taking into account all propagation, site, and S-to-coda transfer function effects. Recently, this methodology was applied to microearthquake data sets from three subregions of northern Italy (i.e., western Alps, northern Apennines, and eastern Alps). Because the study regions were small, ranging between local-to-near-regional distances, the simple 1D path assumptions used in the coda method worked very well. The lateral complexity of this region would suggest, however, that a 2D path correction might provide even better results if the data sets were combined, especially when paths traverse larger distances and complicated regions. The structural heterogeneity of northern Italy makes the region ideal to test the extent to which coda variance can be reduced further by using a 2D Q tomography technique. The approach we use has been developed by Phillips et al. (2005) and is an extension of previous amplitude ratio techniques to remove source effects from the inversion. The method requires some assumptions, such as isotropic source radiation, which is generally true for coda waves. Our results are compared against direct S-wave inversions for 1/Q and results from both share very similar attenuation features that coincide with known geologic structures. We compare our results with those derived from direct waves as well as some recent results from northern California obtained by Mayeda et al. (2005) that tested the same tomographic methodology applied in this study to invert for 1/Q. We find that 2D coda path corrections for this region significantly improve upon the 1D corrections, in contrast to California where only a marginal improvement was observed. We attribute this difference to stronger lateral variations in Q for northern Italy relative to California.
