Notes: The International Society for Photogrammetry held the Xlth International Congress at Lausanne during July 1968. The authors review the activities of five of the seven I.S.P. Commissions.

Notes: During a project concerned with DEM generation using SPOT stereoscopic imagery, difficulties were experienced when using Level 1B stereopairs for the task. This paper presents a mathematical solution to overcome this problem which has been implemented at the University of Glasgow. Results are included from experimental tests which were carried out over a test field in Jordan using this solution. These tests used five SPOT Level 1B stereopairs together with a single SPOT Level 1A stereopair for comparative purposes. The residual errors at the ground control points and independent check points are given and show that a satisfactory solution was achieved.

Notes: In attempting to assess the possibilities of mapping from earth satellites, various factors which do not occur with aerial photography must be considered. The orbital characteristics of satellites are discussed from the point of view of their effects on photographic scale and coverage and the problems of taking and retrieving photography from satellites are outlined. An evaluation of the possibilities and limitations of mapping from both single and stereoscopic television pictures and normal frame photography is made and the tentative conclusion reached that topographic mapping from earth satellite photography may only be considered seriously for the scales 1 : 250 000 to 1 : 1 000 000 and for a minimum contour interval of 100 m. The economy of this very small-scale mapping is at present very doubtful in view of the current costs of building and launching a suitable satellite. Any extensive programme of satellite photography for mapping purposes could pose some difficult legal and political problems if the photography was made freely available.

Internationale Kongress der ISP im Congress Centrum Hamburg statt. Berichte über die Arbeit der 7 technischen Kommissionen der ISP und der mit dem Kongress verbundenen kommerziellen A ustellung wurden anlässlich einer Zusammenkunft der Photogrammetric Society am 28.10.1980 gegeben.

Notes: An analysis of the digitising units attached to stereoplotting instruments reveals four main approaches to their design and construction. The first three are based on hardware, firmware and software respectively and are applied to individual units; the fourth comprises multistation, time sharing systems based on the use of a minicomputer. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are outlined. The software based approach is then described in detail, based on experiences with a system which has been implemented on an Officine Galileo Stereosimplex lie plotter and which uses a Wang 2200 desk top computer and inexpensive, widely available digital components. A large suite of highly interactive programs has been developed and three of these (the basic digitising program and those for relative and absolute orientation) are described in some detail as examples. An account of practical experiences with the system is given and the difficulties which arise in transferring programs between desk top computers are discussed. The software based digitising system is shown to be an extremely powerful, versatile and effective addition to a stereoplotting instrument.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉RésuméUne analyse des dispositifs de traitement numériques attachés aux restituteurs permet de les classer en 4 groupes. Les 3 premiers sont basés respectivement sur l'usage de mécanismes analogiques, d'unités compactes et de logiciels spécialisés associés à un seul appareil; le 4ème pent ètre associé a plusieurs appareils et fonctionner en temps partagé. On discute avantages et inconvénients de ces solutions. On décrit la solution logiciels spécialisés d'aprés des essais faits avec un ordinateur Wang 2200 coupléà des périphériques peu coûteux, associé avec un restituteur Galileo IIc. On a mis au point un ensemble de programmes hautement interactifs dont certains sont ici décrits en détail; on fait part des difficultés rencontrées dans leur usage. Il s'agit finalement d'une solution à la fois très puissante et très souple.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ZusammenfassungEine Analyse von Digitalisiereinheiten, die an Stereokartiergeräte angeschlossen werden können, ergibt bezüglich des Grundaufbaus und der Funktionsweise 4 Haupttypen. Die ersten drei beruhen auf Hard- und Software und werden an Einzelgeräte angeschlossen. Der 4. Typ umfasst mehrere Messplätze, die im Time sharing-Betrieb von einem Minirechner gesteuert werden. Jedes System wird bezüglich seiner Vor- und Nachteile skizziert. Im Detail erfolgt dann eine Beschreibung eines auf Software basierenden Systems, das auf Erfahrungen beruht, die mil einem Wang 2200 Tischrechner und billigen, überall verfügbaren digitalen Komponenten gesammelt wurden. Dieses System wurde mit einem Stereokartiergerät Stereosimplex IIc von Officine Galileo gekoppelt. Es wurde eine grosse Anzahl von meist interaktiven Programmen geschrieben, von denen drei (das Hauptprogramm zur Digitalisierung und die Programme zur relativen und absoluten Orientierung) unter Angabe von Beispielen etwas im Detail beschrieben werden. Zusammenfassung der bisher vorliegenden praktischen Erfahrungen und Angabe der Schwierigkeiten, die bei der Übertragung von Programmen zwischen Tischrechnern entstehen. Es wird gezeigt, dass das auf Software beruhende Digitalisierungssystem sehr leistungsfähig und variabel ist und eine effektive Ergänzung für ein Stereokartiergerät darstellt.

Notes: 1:70 000 scale photographs taken over Syria with a Russian AFA topographic camera equipped with a Russar 29b super-wide angle lens have been tested. The tests included (i) the measurement of a field of points using several different instruments and a comparison of the photogrammetrically derived co-ordinates with the values derived by field survey; (ii) the production of plots at 1: 25 000 scale for comparison with a check plot produced from large scale, wide angle photography; and (iii) production of orthophotographs, also at 1: 25 000 scale. Difficulties were experienced with the asymmetrical lens distortion pattern and the variations in illumination and resolution present in the photography. The former were overcome by manufacture of asymmetrical lens distortion correction plates. When this was done, the accuracies attained were comparable to those achieved in previous tests using photographs taken at the same scale with the Wild RC 9 camera equipped with the Super Aviogon I lens and measured on the same or similar types of measuring equipment.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Résumé On décrit ici un test relatif à une couverture aérienne au 1: 70 000 exécutée en Syrie avec une chambre russe AFA dotée d'un super-grand angulaire 29 b. Le test comprenait: la détermination d'un polygone au sol, et la comparaison des determinations géodésiques et des déterminations photogrammétriques; la restitution de parcelles au 1: 25 000 en vue de les comparer avec une parcelle-test provenant de photos à grande échelle; et la réalisation d'ortho-photos au 1: 25 000. La distorsion disymétrique de l'objectif a conduit à quelques difficultés, ainsi que des inégalités d'éclairement et de finesse sur les clichés. On a surmonté les premières en faisant fabriquer des plaques correctives. Ceci fait, l'exactitude atteinte s'est trouvée du même ordre que celle de restitutions provenant des clichés aux même échelles pris avec le Wild RC9 et effectuées dans des conditions très voisines.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Zusammenfassung Bericht über die Testung von Luftbildern (mb= 70 000), die über Syrien mit einer sowjetischen Überweitwinkelkammer mil einem Russar-Objektiv 29b aufgenommen wurden. Die Untersuchungen umfassten (a) die Aus-messung eines Punktfeldes mit verschiedenen Auswertegeräten und einen Vergleich photogrammetrisch und geodätisch bestimmter Koordinaten, (b) die Durchführung einer Auswertung 1: 25 000 und den Vergleich mit einer aus grossmassstäbigen Weitwinkelbildern abgeleiteten Kontrollkarte, (c) die Herstellung von Orthophotos im Massstab 1: 25 000. Schwierig-keiten resultierten aus der asymmetrischen Objektivverzeichnung und den Variationen in der Bildhelligkeit und -auflösung. Die Verzeichnung konnte durch Herstellung von Kompensationsplatten reduziert werden. Danach waren die erreichten Genauigkeiten mit den in früheren Tests erzielten vergleichbar, bei denen mit einer Wild RC9- Kammer (Super Aviogon I) aufgenommene Luftbilder gleichen Massstabs an denselben oder ühnlichen Auswertegeräten ausgemessen wurden.
