Notes: Summary The Cerchar Abrasivity Index and Its Relation to Rock Mineralogy and Petrography To evaluate the relation between the Cerchar Abrasivity Index (a parameter used in calculating advance rates of full face tunnelling machines) and the petrography of the rocks, measurements were made on minerals and monomineralic rocks. From these data a theoretical abrasivity (quartz equivalence) can be calculated for every rock composition. From the comparison of the theoretical and experimentally determined abrasivity the influence of fabric and other factors besides mineralogical composition were deduced.

Notes: Abstract The curve of the reaction: 1 Rhodochrosite + 1 Quartz ⇌ Pyroxmangite was determined experimentally using gas mixtures with different CO2H2O ratios at a total pressure of 2 kb. In pure CO2, the equilibrium temperature is 508±2° C. By plotting the equilibrium data in terms of InXCO2 versus reciprocal temperature, a ΔH of reaction of 51.7 kcal was obtained. This plot shows a straight-line relationship, indicating internal consistency of the data, and is in good agreement with previous findings that CO2 and H2O mix ideally within the investigated temperature range (400–600° C). When applied to pyroxmangites formed during moderate greenschist facies metamorphism, these data indicate a high acitivity of H2O.

Notes: Abstract Pyroxenoids on the join MnSiO3-CaSiO3 were synthesized from (Mn, Ca)-carbonate solid solutions and SiO2 in CO2-H2O mixtures at a total pressure of 2 kb. The type of structure found (pyroxmangite, rhodonite, bustamite or wollastonite) is mainly dependent on the Mn/Ca ratio, but also to a lesser extent on temperature. Johannsenite-type structures were encountered at low temperatures over a wide compositional range. It has been possible to convert the pyroxenoids pyroxmangite → rhodonite, rhodonite → bustamite, bustamite → wollastonite, and johannsenite → bustamite or wollastonite with increase of temperature, but not the reverse. The compositional ranges of the synthetic pyroxenoids are very similar to those found in natural pyroxenoids.

Notes: Abstract The compositions of coexisting pyroxmangites, rhodonites, rhodochrosites and manganese calcites in regional metamorphosed manganese cale-silicate marbles from Val Scerscen and Alagna were analysed by microprobe and permit definition of critical tie lines at metamorphic grades appropriate to temperatures between 400 and 450 °C. Variations in composition of coexisting mineral pairs in one and the same locality are attributed to variations in $$f_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }$$ and not to metamorphic temperatures. From the analysed assemblages isothermal $$f_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} } - X_{{\text{Ca/Ca + Mn}}}$$ plots (with SiO2 as excess component) were constructed for the system CaO-MnO-SiO2-CO2.

Notes: Abstract The miscibility gap between rhodonite and bustamite has been experimentally determined at temperatures between 600° and 1,100° C. For temperatures below 700° C the resulting limbs have been extrapolated on T-X-diagram as at such low temperatures equilibrium could not be attained. According to microprobe analyses for the natural assemblages of Ravinella di Sotto (Ivrea zone, Italy) and Broken Hill (N.S.W., Australia) equilibrium temperatures are estimated to be at 500° to 550° C. However these assemblages are thought to have re-equilibrated during cooling and the compositions of equilibrium assemblages are also pressure dependent. According to experiments and to molar volume data the rhodonite structure is stabilized by high pressures whereas bustamite by high temperatures. Based on available experimental results and natural data an isobaric T-X Ca diagram and two isotherm $$X_{CO_2 }$$ -X Ca diagrams (for T=400° C and T=600° C) are given.

Notes: Abstract The primary minerals of a partly serpentinized Alpine type ultrabasic mass, lying in a zone of low Alpine metamorphism, were analysed with an electron microprobe. The distribution coefficients of Mg and Fe in coexisting orthopyroxenes, clinopyroxenes and olivines indicates an equilibrium temperature of around 1400°C. The Ca/Ca+Mg ratios in the clinopyroxenes indicate temperatures between 800° and 1000°C. This discrepancy in temperature estimations can partly be explained by the high Al2O3-contents of the clinopyroxenes, since a good correlation between Al2O3-contents and Ca/Ca+Mg ratio was found. The Na2O-content of the clinopyroxenes decreases in the successive pyroxenites that differentiated from the main lherzolite. From the mineralogical composition of the different rock types and the chemical compositions of the minerals it is concluded that the Totalp peridotite originated in the Upper Mantle. In the Malenco serpentinite, the clinopyroxenes formed during the rather strong Alpine metamorphism are much poorer in Al2O3 and Na2O than the primary clinopyroxenes. On the other hand, the olivines, grown postdeformationally during the Alpine metamorphism, are not much different in composition to the primary olivines.

Notes: Abstract In the ophiolite series of N. Oman numerous small and large elongated podiform chromite deposits occur within the peridotite complex at a certain level of 100–200 meters below the layered zone, which grades into the overlying gabbro complex. The chromite grains were corroded after their deposition; their composition shows a large variation in Cr/Al ratio and a small variation in Cr/Fe ratio. The chromium is thought to have been liberated from clino-pyroxenes during partial melting of lherzolitic upper mantle material. Precipitation of large quantities of chromite at the specific level below the gabbro complex is related to the plagioclase- /spinel-lherzolite transition, but the influence of a change in oxygen fugacity is also considered.
