Abstract A scanning plasmon near-field microscope has been used to image dye clusters on a silver surface. This demonstrates the potential of optical near-field microscopy for the investigation of surfaces and non-conducting adsorbate layers. Images recorded in parallel with the conventional scanning tunneling microscope show the underlying conductive substrate.
