Notes: The trendtowards higher density, higher frequency, higher power active devices in placing increasinglydifficult demands on device packaging. Materials with high thermal conductivities are replacingthe traditional ceramics in hermetic, high power packages, and MCM/ hybrid modules. Thermally enhanced plastic packages more frequently feature heat sinks embedded in thepackage for direct attachment of the power devices. Today's challenge inelectronic packaging is to dissipate the heat from the source, the device itself, without affectingits electrical performance or reliability. The material directly contacting the device is the dieattach medium. On lower power packages, the die bond line is not usually the highest thermalresistance in the thermal path. With highly conductive substrates and heat sinks, the die attachmaterial now becomes the critical element directly in series with the highly conductive substrate. Fundamental limitations in thermal properties of about 3 W/mK exist inpresent-day organic adhesives, primarily of the thermosetting type. Thisthermal conductivity (k) does not meet the current demands of thermally enhancedplastic laminate packages, MCMs, or direct die attach to heat spreaders or heat sinks. This paper describes the development, properties and application ofelectrically conductive thermoplastic adhesive pastes having thermal conductivity values as highas 35 W/mK, and able to produce thin, void-free bond lines for maximum thermaltransfer. The key material variables are isolated and evaluated for their impact of the k value. DOEs (design of experiments) were run to optimise the combination of the keyvariables, namely size/shape of the filler and the volume fraction to produce the highest kwithout sacrificing other functional properties such as adhesion. The effect of polymer chemistry(thermoset and thermoplastic) was also studied. The properties of the newlydeveloped, enhanced conductivity thermoplastic adhesives are compared with other materialtechnologies and examples of current applications reviewed.

Notes: Summary Nodular anorthosite, containing rounded aggregates (nodules) of plagioclase set in a gabbroic to pyroxenitic matrix, is developed in constrictions (〈 500 m wide) within the central and eastern parts of the Early Proterozoic East Bull Lake Intrusion, central Ontario, Canada. The nodules typically occur as spherical to ovoidal aggregates ranging from 1 cm to 14 cm in diameter. Larger nodules are physical agglomerations of smaller nodules that formed in isolation. Plagioclase core compositions for the nodules display little variation in anorthite content (An68–75), indicating a homogeneous and nonfractionating parent magma during the initial stages of nodule development. The restricted occurrence of the nodular anorthosite is consistent with a model in which the nodules formed in response to elevated degrees of undercooling within dike-like constrictions in the proto-chamber. Undercooling resulted in the rapid nucleation and growth of plagioclase upon pre-existing plagioclase phenocrysts (disequilibrium crystallization). The resultant primary nodules then aggregated together forming secondary nodules, possibly through an agglomeration process involving a Mg-Fe-rich residual liquid. Migration of some of this relatively dense liquid out of the nodular anorthosite unit during the final stages of consolidation resulted in compaction and promoted the formation of large tertiary nodules.

Notes: Abstract Granitoid rocks of the compositionally zoned Late Cretaceous Toulumne Intrusive Suite in the central Sierra Nevada, California, have initial87Sr/86Sr values (Sri) and143Nd/144Nd values (Ndi) that vary from 0.7057 to 0.7067 and from 0.51239 to 0.51211 respectively. The observed variation of both Sri and Ndi and of chemical composition in rocks of the suite cannot be due to crystal fractionation of magma solely under closed system conditons. The largest variation in chemistry, Ndi, and Sri is present in the outer-most equigranular units of the Tuolumne Intrusive Suite. Sri varies positively with SiO2, Na2O, K2O, and Rb concentrations, and negatively with Ndi, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, FeO, CaO, MnO, P2O5, TiO2, and Sr concentrations. This covariation of Sri, Ndi and chemistry can be modeled by a process of simple mixing of basaltic and granitic magmas having weight percent SiO2 of 48.0 and 73.3 respectively. Isotopic characteristic of the mafic magma are Sri=0.7047, Ndi=0.51269 andδ 18O=6.0, and of the felsic magma are Sri=0.7068, Ndi=0.51212 andδ 18O=8.9. The rocks sampled contain from 50 to 80% of the felsic component. An aplite in the outer equigranular unit of the Tuolumne Intrusive Suite apparently was derived by fractional crystallization of plagioclase and hornblende from magma with granudiorite composition that was a product of mixing of the magmas described above. Siliceous magmas derived from the lower crust, having a maximum of 15 percent mantle-derived mafic component, are represented by the inner prophyritic units of the Tuolumne Intrusive Suite.

Notes: Abstract Observations of the CO J=6→5 transition at 691 GHz (434 μm) in new interstellar and planetary sources have been made. The heterodyne receiver uses an optically pumped laser local oscillator and a quasi-optical Schottky diode mixer, with measured noise temperatures consistently under 4000 K (double sideband). Continued improvements in system performance and antenna coupling have made possible the mapping of 434 μm emission from W3, and the detection of CO J=5→6 absorption in the atmosphere of Venus. A detailed description of the instrumentation and recent observational data are provided.

Notes: A small short muscle frequently acts across a joint in parallel with a vastly larger and longer muscle; therefore it should play a minimal role in the mechanical control of that joint. This study provides evidence suggesting that the small member of such a “parallel muscle combination” (PMC) may serve an important sensory feedback role. The spindle densities of large and small members of PMCs in man and the dog were determined and compared. Epaxial PMCs controlling canine intervertebral joints were dissected and tissue samples were embedded in paraffin, sectioned transversely to the muscles' long axis and, stained with hematoxylin-periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). Representative tissue sections were projected on to stereological grids and the percentage volume of spindles was determined. Data existing in the literature were used to ascertain spindle densities in human PMCs controlling joints in the cervico-occipital region and the extremities. The spindle density for each muscle in a group of PMCs controlling a particular motion was listed, and the mean spindle densities were determined for both the large and the small members of the group. Student's unpaired t test was used to determine the significance of the differences between mean spindle densities. Linear regression was calculated and the data were plotted graphically. In all PMCs examined, the spindle density of the small muscles was significantly higher than that of their large counterparts. It is therefore proposed that the small muscles of PMCs may function as “kinesiological monitors” generating important proprioceptive feedback to the central nervous system.
