    Notes: The growth, standing stocks and production of tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron (Cichlidae) in the 1 km2 Sakumo Lagoon near Tema, Ghana, are estimated by application of recently developed models to previously published data.     Notes: Hook selection curve for yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares caught off Darigayos Cove, Northern Luzon, Philippines were estimated using the Baranov/Holt method. Estimated optimum capture length (Lopt) increased with hook size, as did the selection range.     Notes: Fish need oxygen for aerobic generation of energy for body maintenance, locomotion, feeding and biosynthesis. The rate of oxygen uptake of most fish is limited by diffusion through the gills, and gill surface area grows at a slower rate than body mass. We hypothesize, therefore: (1) that the maximum rate of feed intake is related to the capacity to take in oxygen for processing of this feed; and (2) that the maximum rate of feed intake relative to body size decreases with increasing body size to a point where growth is zero. An oxygen limitation module based on this theory was incorporated into an existing dynamic simulation model for the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.).The module calculates the maximum potential oxygen supply to the fish on the basis of Fick's law of diffusion and the allometric relationship between body weight and gill surface area. Total oxygen demand of the fish is computed as the sum of routine metabolism, feeding metabolism and energy needed for biosynthesis. In the module, the feeding rate is limited to a level where total oxygen demand does not exceed the potential supply.The model is used to simulate feeding and growth of O. niloticus. Simulation results provide strong support for the oxygen limitation theory. Hence, the model can be used for the analysis of fish growth as affected by feed amount, feed composition, as well as environmental conditions (temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration). It also explains differences in final size between fish species, and within species under different conditions.

    Notes: When key biological statistics (growth parameters, mortality rates, etc.) of a large number of fish species are plotted against other variables (notably maximum size and mean habitat temperature), clear trends or patterns tend to emerge. These patterns are usually not perceived as requiring explanation, as reflected in the rarity of pertinent hypotheses in the literature, relative to the ubiquity of the patterns. A theory is presented which has the potential to explain the propensities behind many of these observed patterns. This theory, based on the author's earlier work, is built around the notion that gill area severely constrains the respiration and hence the growth of fishes (and other water-breathing animals). The patterns generated by growth-related processes, such as mortality, reproduction or food consumption can then also be explained. In this theory, tropical fishes are not different from other fishes, once account is taken of the fact that tropical fish are, not metaphorically but literally, in hot water.

    Notes: Published estimates of ration and/or food conversion efficiency of various size groups of fishes from 75 different stocks belonging to 56 tropical and temperate species were standardized and re-expressed as annual fish food consumption (Q) per unit biomass of the age-structured population (B). Although derived from extremely heterogeneous sources, these estimates of Q/B show surprisingly regular patterns. These allow confirmation of some earlier hypotheses, e.g. that Q/B increases with water temperature and decreases with asymptotic weight. More interestingly, it is shown that the aspect ratio of the caudal fin of fishes that use the carangiform and related swimming modes (i.e. subcarangiform and thunniform) correlates closely with Q/B, when other factors are accounted for. A brief discussion of some implications of these and related results is provided.
