    Description: Replicate soil samples (2–20) from the A, B and C horizons of 41 pedons were collected to measure within-pedon variability of particle size distribution, organic matter content, calcium carbonate equivalent and pH. Variability in soil properties was examined in relation to the mode of origin of the soil material, soil horizonation and soil drainage. Variance in particle size distribution was significantly influenced by mode of deposition as well as by soil horizons, while soil drainage had no significant influence on the variation in particle size distribution. Variance in calcium carbonate equivalent and organic matter content was not influenced by soil drainage or mode of deposition. The number of replicate samples required for statistically reliable evaluation of a pedon at given confidence limits was determined for the soil properties studied. The results of these calculations indicate the need for up to five replicate samples to achieve satisfactory levels of accuracy at the 95% confidence level for some of the soil properties studied.

    Description: The "Canadian soil capability classification for agriculture" (Department of Regional Economic Expansion 1969) was tested for its ability to predict the economic profitability of land for grain corn production in Southwestern Ontario. The economic records from 83 grain corn operations were supplied by the Economics Branch, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. In addition to the itemization of production costs and returns, a soil capability class and productivity index were established for each record as a measure of land quality. Land quality as defined by productivity index was significantly correlated with gross returns and gross margin per hectare. Frequency distributions showed that high gross returns per hectare were three times as likely if the productivity index was between 90 and 100 than if it fell between 80 and 89. High returns per hectare and low cost per ton are indicative of cost controls coupled with high yields. The probability of obtaining this position is best when the highest quality land is used for production. To ensure adequate food supplies at reasonable cost to consumers it is essential that an agricultural land use policy incorporate land quality as one of its basic principles.

    Description: SARS-CoV-2 emerged from animals and is now easily transmitted between people. Sporadic detection of natural cases in animals alongside successful experimental infections of pets, such as cats, ferrets and dogs, raises questions about the susceptibility of animals under natural conditions of pet ownership. Here, we report a large-scale study to assess SARS-CoV-2 infection in 919 companion animals living in northern Italy, sampled at a time of frequent human infection. No animals tested PCR positive. However, 3.3% of dogs and 5.8% of cats had measurable SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody titers, with dogs from COVID-19 positive households being significantly more likely to test positive than those from COVID-19 negative households. Understanding risk factors associated with this and their potential to infect other species requires urgent investigation.

    Description: Changes in AChE regulation, the functions of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), and muscle fiber-type population in the extensor digitorium longus (EDL) and soleus of male rats suspended in a nonweight-bearing position are studied. Muscle weight, AChE activity, protein content, SR calcium loading rates, and muscle types in the suspended and control rats are evaluated and compared. It is observed that following 1-4 weeks of suspension the EDL is unaffected; however, the soleus muscle weight, and protein content decrease and the AChE activity increases. The SR calcium loading rates of EDL decrease 10 percent and the soleus increase 50 percent in the suspended rats. The data reveal that the population of muscle type 1 (slow fibers) decreases and type 2 (fast fibers) increases for the soleus, and the distribution is unchanged for the EDL of the suspended rats. It is detected that a nonweight-bearing position affects the soleus (a fast-twitch muscle), but not the EDL (a slow-twitch muscle).
