Notes: The polymer prepared from 8-hydroxyquinoline and 1,2-dichloroethylene by Friedel-Craft's condensation, showed to be a selective chelating ion-exchange resin for certain metal ions. A batch equilibration method was employed in the study of the selectivity of metal ion uptake. This method involved the measurement of distribution of a given metal ion between the polymer sample and a solution containing the metal ions. The study was carried out over a wide pH range and in media of various ionic strengths.

Notes: Poly(phenylene carboxylate) and the corresponding copolyesters were prepared respectively by homopolycondensation of m- and p-hydroxybenzoyl chlorides and by condensation of a mixture of acid chlorides of ortho- and para-hydroxy benzoic acids. These polyesters which did not undergo Fries rearrangement were hydroyzed to acid monomers on treatment with hot aqueous acid solution. The copolyesters were characterized and compared with the corresponding homopolyesters.
