Populations of Gammarus pulex (density 4000m−2) were exposed, over a 100-day period in a continuous-flow dosing system, to concentrations of copper below the 240 h median lethal concentration (LC50) for juveniles.2. There was a significant effect of copper on the resulting population density. In the control and lowest treatment (11.0μg1-−1) it was double the initial density, but with increasing copper concentration there was a decrease in density until at the highest treatment (23.1 μg1-−1), it was less than that of the initial population. The lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) for population density was 14.6 μg 1-−1.3. Copper significantly affected the age composition of the final populations. In the control and lowest treatment concentration, the population was composed mainly of juvenile animals. With increasing copper concentration, however, there was a decrease in the number of juveniles, the LOEC being 14.6 μg1-−1. The number of adults in the final population was also significantly reduced by copper, with an LOEC of 18.2 μg1-−1.4. The relationship between the body length and number of antennal segments of animals in the populations at each treatment concentration showed that growth was impaired by increased copper concentrations.

Immediate post-moult animals are significantly more sensitive than intermoult specimens at cadmium concentrations between 1.0 and 0.1 mg 1−1 but not at 0.03 or 0.01 mg Cd 1−1.3. At a calcium concentration of 40mgl−1, post-moult animals undergo recalcification within 7 days and thereafter there is little variation in their response to cadmium.4. External calcium concentrations of 40 and 115mg 1−1 do not affect cadmium toxicity but at 180 mg Ca1−1 the sensitivity of immediate post-moult specimens is significantly reduced.5. The results are discussed with regard to the protection of G. pulex by present water quality standards.

A soft-water stream iti upland Wales was dosed with sulphuric acid and aluminiutn sulphate at two successive points to create sitnultaneous episodes of low pH, and low pH with increased aluminiutn. Chemical atid biological responses were measured before, during and after the episode and were compared with a reference zone.2. The pH fell frotn ∼7.0 to 4.28 (±0.18 SD) and 5.02 (±0.10) respectively in the acid and aluminium zones. Corresponding aluminium concentrations during the episode were 0.052 g Al m−3 (±0.008) and 0.347 g Al nr3 (±0.047), the former not differing significantly from the reference zone. The concentration of cadmium rose to 0.002- 0.011 g Cd m−3in both treated areas, but the concentrations of other metals were unchanged.3. In situ toxicity tests were performed with macroinvertebrates and fish. Chironomus riparius. Hydropsyche angustipennis and Dinocras cephalotes suffered no mortality. Ecdyonurus venosus, Baetis rhodani and Gammarus pulex showed up to 25% mortality in both treatment zones and further mortalities occurred after the episode. Brown trout Salmo trutta and salmon Valmo salar s howed 7–10% mortality in the acid zone, but 50–87% in the aluminium zone, where salmon had a significantly shorter LT50than trout.4. The drift of Simuliidae increased during treatment in both acid and aluminium zones. Drift densities of Dixa puherula, Protonemura meyeri, Ephemeralla ignita and Dicranota sp. increased in the aluminium zone. The most pronounced response was by Baetis rhodani in the aluminium zone where drift density increased by ×8.4 during the episode.5. Baetis rhodani was the only taxon to show a significant decline in benthic density during the treatment, and then only in the aluminium zone. Drift could account for most of the losses.6. The depth distribution of invertebrates in the substratum differed between zones following treatment. More individuals were present at the surface of the reference zone (1287 m−2±747) than at the surface of the other zones (〈400 m−2); however, densities at greater depths were similar. These patterns probably reflected differences prior to the treatments.

    Notizen: Cadmium toxicity to rainbow trout was evaluated at two cadmium concentrations (0.01, 0.10 mg1−1) and in water without added cadmium using eggs reared through the larval (alevin) phase to swim-up fry. Exposure to 0.1 mg Cd 1−1 promoted premature hatching, retarded growth, increased rates of mortality and the occurrence of developmental abnormalities such as spinal curvature and blood clots. Three methods of holding the eggs and alevins during the toxicity test were compared. Hatching time and success, alevin mortality, growth and development were not influenced by the method of containment but of the three methods, a subdivided perforated box system proved particularly useful for monitoring the responses of specific animals throughout the toxicity test.

    Notizen: A toxicity test with cadmium concentrations ranging from 0·1 to 100·0 mg Cd 1−1 was used to assess the effect of cadmium pretreatment on rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri Richardson) alevins. The median period of survival for fish pretreated at 0·01 mg Cd 1−1 was found to be increased at test concentrations up to 10mg Cd 1−1 compared with alevins pretreated with dilution water. However, at concentrations above 10mg Cd 1−1 pretreatment at 0·01 mg Cd 1−1 reduced the median period of survival.

    Notizen: The toxicity of cadmium to sticklebacks was determined over a wide range of concentrations. The 96 h LC50 was found to be 6.5 mg Cd I−1. The shape of the time-concentration curve suggests that cadmium may have two toxic mechanisms. The median period of survival for fish infected with the plerocercoids of the cestode, Schistocephalus solidus, was found to be considerably shorter than for non-parasitized fish. This observation is considered in the light of the known effects of 5. solidus on its host.

    Notizen: Cadmium was found to be lethal to sticklebacks at all concentrations from 100.0 to 0.001 mg Cd 1–1, in water of 103–111 mg 1–1 hardness as CaCO3. The pattern of mortality as shown by the time-concentration curve suggests that toxicity is not due to a single mechanism but changes with concentration. Fish were found to accumulate cadmium, the whole body levels increasing from 0.90 μg/g fresh weight at 0.001 mg Cd 1–1 exposure concentration to 51.0 μg/g at 100 mg Cd 1–1. The concentration factor was shown to decrease with increasing exposure concentration from 0.51 at 100 mg Cd 1–1 to 511 at 0.001 mg Cd 1–1. The plerocercoid parasite Schistocephalus solidus in the host's perivisceral cavity contained less cadmium than the tissues of its host.

    Notizen: The uptake of cadmium by eggs and alevins of rainbow trout from water concentrations of between 0.01 and 50.0 mg Cd 1−1 was investigated. The cadmium content of eggs and alevins increased with time and with exposure concentration. Lower cadmium levels were detected in alevins than in eggs. Most of the cadmium (98%) in the eggs was found to be associated with the egg membrane or chorion. This explains the considerable reduction in cadmium concentration observed in alevins after hatching. Alevins hatching from eggs which had been exposed to cadmium survived longer in cadmium than alevins not exposed as eggs. This suggests that the pretreatment of eggs with cadmium serves some protective function. Behavioural and pathological signs of cadmium poisoning such as erratic swimming and blood clotting in alevins were observed.

    Notizen: Abstract Chironomus riparius Meigen and Chironomus tentans Fabricius were examined under controlled conditions and exposed to the reference toxicants cadmium and lindane (γ-hexachlorocyclohexane) to identify any differences that could have implications for their use in aquatic toxicity testing. Preliminary studies showed that both species could be cultured in the laboratory using similar methodology, resulting in the typical bimodal emergence of adult males prior to females. However, adults of C. riparius emerged earlier and in greater numbers than C. tentans. Comparative measurements of head capsule width and body length for the four larval instars revealed similar dimensions for each species up to and including the third instar. Fourth-instar larvae of C. tentans were considerably larger than those of C. riparius. Median lethal concentrations (LC50) determined over a 10-day exposure period suggested no difference in species response to cadmium; however, with increasing exposure time, C. tentans was significantly more sensitive to lindane. The investigations showed that the pattern of response was similar for the two species, and that both C. riparius and C. tentans are suitable test organisms for acute exposure assays.
