    Notes: The involutive automorphisms of hyperbolic Kac–Moody algebras are computed from Satake diagrams of these algebras which are then used to furnish a general procedure of their Iwasawa decomposition.     Notes: We carry out the Iwasawa decomposition of the affine Kac–Moody algebras within the general framework of involutive automorphisms which are determined with the help of the Satake diagrams corresponding to these algebras. The parabolic subalgebras essential for the construction of induced representations are computed from the Langlands decomposition. In particular, we consider the untwisted versions, viz., A1(1) and A2(1), as representative examples for the purpose of illustration. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract In a study on CH4 emission from flooded rice fields under irrigated conditions, fields planted with rice emitted more methane than unplanted fields. The CH4 efflux in planted plots varied with the rice variety and growth stage and ranged from 4 to 26 mg h-1m-2. During the reproductive stage of the rice plants, CH4 emission was high and the oxidation power of rice roots, in terms of α-naphthylamine oxidation, was very low. The CH4 emission reached a maximum at midday and declined to minimum levels at midnight, irrespective of the rice variety. The peak CH4 emission at midday was associated with higher solar radiation and higher soil/water temperature.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of the present work is to investigate the charge structure of neutron by calculating its root mean square charge radius 〈r n 2 〉1/2 and the corresponding charge form factor,G n(q), within the general framework of quark-parton model. The neutron (the nucleon in general) is considered to be disc-like in conformity with the idea of Lorentz invariance. Using the proton charge radius, 〈r p 2 〉=0·707 fm2 as input, our calculations not only reproduce the observed negative sign correctly but also give reasonable value for the magnitude of 〈r n 2 〉 when compared with the experimental limits. −0·16≦〈r n 2 〉≦−0·11 (fm2). Predictiona are also made for the proton and the neutron charge form factors and the results compared with the data.

    Notes: Abstract Rain water samples were collected at New Delhi during the monsoon of 1994 at a height of 30 m above the ground level using a wet-only collector. Simultaneously, bulk samples from two different heights at 30 m and 13 m were collected. Frequency distribution of pH in wet-only samples revealed that rain was mostly alkaline Four out of 23 events were observed to be acidic where the ratio of (Ca+Mg+NH4)/(SO4+NO3) was very low. pH and ionic constituents were higher in bulk samples than in wet-only samples. On an average, the concentration in bulk samples at 30m height exceeded the wet-only samples by 13% while bulk samples collected at 13m height had 19% higher concentration than the bulk samples at 30m height and 32% higher than wet-only. The acidity of ram water was mainly contributed by sulphuric acid rather than nitric acid. At the height of 30 m, the acidity was primarily neutralized by NH4 while at 13 m height, it was buffered by Ca and Mg indicating the influence of dust particles.

    Notes: Abstract The charge structure of low lying spin 1/2 (8) baryons is investigated in terms of their radii, 〈r2〉, using the assumption of nonfactorizability of tranverse parton momentum distribution and the requirement that the u- and d-quarks inside a nucleon are described by “separate” spatial distributions. Explicit calculations lead to the startling prediction that the charge radii of all neutral baryons are negative in sign and nonvanishing in magnitude.

    Notes: Abstract Rain water samples of equal volume (50 mL) were collected from two couvective showers at New Delhi on 28 July and 23 August during the monsoon, 1994. The variation of constituents of both the showers showed different trends which might have been due to different antecedent periods. The first shower occurred after an antecedent period of 2–3 hours while the second shower occurred after a 14 day interval. The first shower had acidic pH (〈5.6) and relatively higher concentration of NH4, SO4, NO3, Cl, F and K indicating insignificant below cloud scavenging. The second shower had alkaline pH (〉5.6) and relatively higher concentrations of Ca and Mg. The higher concentration of Ca and Mg in the second shower were due to the loading with particulate matter during the preceding 14 days which made below cloud scavenging significant.
