Abstract We show that the well-known Pontryagin's formula for the average time of first attainment by a Brownian particle of the absorbing boundary can also be used to obtain the exact value of the average relaxation time for the nonequilibrium state of a nonlinear dynamic system with noise and an arbitrary symmetric potential profile.
