Description / Table of Contents: Summary A pivoting rule is crucial to the simplex method. This paper suggests two variants of “Bland's type” of pivoting rule. In contrast with the latter, which are based on indices of variables, the new rules are based on so-called “pivoting indices”, which are of full geometrical meaning. According to the underlying geometric philosophy of them and test results obtained by the author, these rules are not only finite and simple, but also promising practically.

Description: The restoration of blood flow following thrombolytic therapy causes ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury leading to blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and subsequent brain edema in patients of ischemic stroke. Levo-tetrahydropalmatine (l-THP) occurs in Corydalis genus and some other plants. However, whether l-THP exerts protective role on BBB disrpution following cerebral I/R remains unclear. Male C57BL/6N mice (23 to 28 g) were subjected to 90 min middle cerebral artery occlusion, followed by reperfusion for 24 h. l-THP (10, 20, 40 mg/kg) was administrated by gavage 60 min before ischemia. We found I/R evoked Evans blue extravasation, albumin leakage, brain water content increase, cerebral blood flow decrease, cerebral infarction and neurological deficits, all of which were attenuated by l-THP treatment. Meanwhile, l-THP inhibited tight junction (TJ) proteins down-expression, Src kinase phosphorylation, matrix metalloproteinases-2/9 (MMP-2/9) and caveolin-1 activation. In addition, surface plasmon resonance revealed binding of l-THP to Src kinase with high affinity. Then we found Src kinase inhibitor PP2 could attenuate Evans blue dye extravasation and inhibit the caveolin-1, MMP-9 activation, occludin down-expression after I/R, respectively. In conclusion, l-THP attenuated BBB injury and brain edema, which were correlated with inhibiting the Src kinase phosphorylation. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep11155

Description: In this study, a nonlinear analysis method called improved information entropy (IIE) is proposed on the basis of constructing a special probability mass function for the normalized analysis of Shannon entropy for a time series. The definition is directly applied to several typical time series, and the characteristic of IIE is analyzed. This method can distinguish different kinds of signals and reflects the complexity of one-dimensional time series of high sensitivity to the changes in signal. Thus, the method is applied to the fault diagnosis of a rolling bearing. Experimental results show that the method can effectively extract the sensitive characteristics of the bearing running state and has fast operation time and minimal parameter requirements.

Description: Materials, Vol. 11, Pages 1373: Effect of Healing Agents on Crack Healing of Asphalt and Asphalt Mortar Materials doi: 10.3390/ma11081373 Authors: Changluan Pan Ping Tang Martin Riara Liantong Mo Mingliang Li Meng Guo This study investigated the effect of seven healing agents on crack healing ability of long-term aged asphalt and its mortar. Different healing agents including sunflower oil, aromatic oil, bitumen emulsion, and maltene-based emulsions were used. The crack healing of asphalt made use of two asphalt disk samples and healing was evaluated using direct tensile tests. For asphalt mortar, notched semi-circular samples were used. Test results indicated that the crack healing of asphalt and its mortar depended strongly on the type of healing agent. In general, asphalt healed faster than its mortar. Asphalt healing could be well improved by using oil agents, while asphalt mortar could be well healed with maltene-based emulsions. The crack healing of asphalt mortar developed rapidly followed by a steady state of increase. Initial crack healing using healing agents could be contributed by the diffusion and softening effects, which resulted in low strength recovery. Long term healing could lead to the bonding reconstitution in the cracks, which were decisive for the final strength gain. The promising healing agent should be able to achieve maximum strength recovery to resist cracking as well as a sufficient re-healing ability to deal with crack opening and closing.

Description: Fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration was modified by hydrothermal treatment and used as catalyst support for Mn-Ce composite oxides. The prepared catalyst showed good activity for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO by NH 3 . A NO conversion of 93% could be achieved at 300 °C under a GHSV of 32857 h -1 . With the help of characterizations including XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, XPS and TPR, it was found that hydrothermal treatment brought a large surface area and abundant mesoporous to the modified fly ash, and Mn-Ce composite oxides were highly dispersed on the surface of the support. These physical and chemical properties were the intrinsic reasons for the good SCR activity. This work transformed fly ash into high value-added products, providing a new approach to the resource utilization and pollution control of fly ash.

Description: Entropy, Vol. 19, Pages 616: Effects of Endwall Fillet and Bulb on the Temperature Uniformity of Pin-Fined Microchannel Entropy doi: 10.3390/e19110616 Authors: Zhiliang Pan Ping Li Jinxing Li Yanping Li Endwall fillet and bulb structures are proposed in this research to improve the temperature uniformity of pin-fined microchannels. The periodical laminar flow and heat transfer performances are investigated under different Reynolds numbers and radius of fillet and bulb. The results show that at a low Reynolds number, both the fillet and the bulb structures strengthen the span-wise and the normal secondary flow in the channel, eliminate the high temperature area in the pin-fin, improve the heat transfer performance of the rear of the cylinder, and enhance the thermal uniformity of the pin-fin surface and the outside wall. Compared to traditional pin-fined microchannels, the flow resistance coefficient f of the pin-fined microchannels with fillet, as well as a bulb with a 2 μm or 5 μm radius, does not increase significantly, while, f of the pin-fined microchannels with a 10 μm or 15 μm bulb increases notably. Moreover, Nu has a maximum increase of 16.93% for those with fillet and 20.65% for those with bulb, and the synthetic thermal performance coefficient TP increases by 16.22% at most for those with fillet and 15.67% at most for those with bulb. At last, as the Reynolds number increases, heat transfer improvement of the fillet and bulb decreases.

Description: Sensors, Vol. 18, Pages 2306: A Topology Control with Energy Balance in Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks for IoT-Based Application Sensors doi: 10.3390/s18072306 Authors: Zhen Hong Xiaoman Pan Ping Chen Xianchuang Su Ning Wang Wenqi Lu As part of the IoT-based application, underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN), which are typically self-organized heterogeneous wireless network, are one of the research hot-spots using various sensors in marine exploration and water environment monitoring application fields, recently. Due to the serious attenuation of radio in water, acoustic or hybrid communication is a usual way for transmitting information among nodes, which dissipates much more energy to prevent the network failure and guarantee the quality of service (QoS). To address this issue, a topology control with energy balance, namely TCEB, is proposed for UWSN to overcome time-delay and other interference, as well as make the entire network load balance. With the given underwater network model and its specialized energy consumption model, we introduce the non-cooperative-game-based scheme to select the nodes with better performance as the cluster-heads. Afterwards, the intra-cluster and inter-cluster topology construction are, respectively, to form the effective communication links of the intra-cluster and inter-cluster, which aim to build energy-efficient topology to reduce energy consumption. With the demonstration of the simulation, the results show the proposed TCEB has better performance on energy-efficiency and throughput than three other representative algorithms in complex underwater environments.
