Description: Glutathione reductase from trypanosomes and leishmanias, unlike glutathione reductase from other organisms, requires an unusual low molecular weight cofactor for activity. The cofactor was purified from the insect trypanosomatid Crithidia fasciculata and identified as a novel glutathione-spermidine conjugate, N1,N8-bis(L-gamma-glutamyl-L-hemicystinyl-glycyl)spermidine, for which the trivial name trypanothione is proposed. This discovery may open a new chemotherapeutic approach to trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Fairlamb, A H -- Blackburn, P -- Ulrich, P -- Chait, B T -- Cerami, A -- 1 R01 A127429/PHS HHS/ -- 1 R01 AI19428/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1985 Mar 22;227(4693):1485-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3883489" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Abstract Nisin was first introduced commercially as a food preservative in the UK approximately 30 years ago. First established use was as a preservative in processed cheese products and since then numerous other applications in foods and beverages have been identified. It is currently recognised as a safe food preservative in approximately 50 countries. The established uses of nisin as a preservative in processed cheese, various pasteurised dairy products, and canned vegetables will be briefly reviewed. More recent applications of nisin include its use as a preservative in high moisture, hot baked flour products (crumpets) and pasteurised liquid egg. Renewed interest is evident in the use of nisin in natural cheese production. Considerable research has been carried out on the antilisterial properties of nisin in foods and a number of applications have been proposed. Uses of nisin to control spoilage lactic acid bacteria have been identified in beer, wine, alcohol production and low pH foods such as salad dressings. Further developments of nisin are likely to include synergistic action of nisin with chelators and other bacteriocins, and its use as an adjunct in novel food processing technology such as higher pressure sterilisation and electroporation. Production of highly purified nisin preparations and enhancement by chelators has led to interest in the use of nisin for human ulcer therapy, and mastitis control in cattle.

Notes: Abstract The effect of increasing lamellar thickness in bulk polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) by various methods (annealing and increasing time and temperature of crystallisation) on the parameters of theα andγ relaxations has been studied. For the a relaxationα consistent increase in temperature of maximum loss and activation energy with increasing lamellar thickness confirms the strong suggestion of earlier work [6] on oriented specimens and shows that theα relaxation arises mainly in the interior of the lamellae with little contribution from the chain folds. No systematic changes in these parameters with increasing lamellar thickness was found for theγ relaxation and this is explained by the presence ofγ c andγ a components in crystalline and amorphous regions respectively. The componentγ a (as well as theγ c one) shows a marked anisotropy in magnitude with respect to the draw direction in oriented specimens relative to the direction of the applied electric field. This implies a “lining up” of the chain molecules parallel to one another in amorphous regions. The non-existence of analogous short chain compounds and experimental scatter prevented detailed checking of the consistency of the data for theα relaxation with the theory for theα c-C c model [5].
