Notes: The effects of 30 keV N+ implantation in amorphous silicon carbide films deposited on silicon substrates by rf sputtering over a fluence range of 1×1016–2×1017 ions cm−2, are studied by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and infrared (IR) absorption techniques. The ion-induced modifications of these films have been investigated on the basis of the chemical state evolution of Si, C, and N (using XPS and AES) and on the basis of the vibrational features of the films components (using IR absorption). The results show that implanted N bonds Si selectively, substituting the C atoms in the silicon carbide, and the C substitution by N results in a composite layer of carbonitrides and free C. An ion-induced C transport has also been observed and correlations are established between the formation of silicon carbonitrides and the dynamical behavior of the C in the implanted layer. The latter appears as a superposition of (a) a chemically induced atomic redistribution, required by local stoichiometry and space-filling possibilities in an amorphous network, and (b) a radiation-induced redistribution, a mechanism that is prevailing at low-fluence implantation.

Notes: The structural and elastic properties of a thin gold film alloyed with Cu and Ni have been studied by surface Brillouin scattering, x-ray reflectivity and low angle x-ray diffraction. The role of guided (Sezawa) acoustic modes to determine precise values of the elastic constants has been ascertained. Although weak, the hardening effect of alloying elements has been clearly detected. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The elastic constants of a cubic boron nitride film, with a fraction of tetrahedral bonding of 96% were measured by surface Brillouin spectroscopy. Precise values for both shear and Young modulus were obtained. A comparison with nanoindentation results was made and a critical discussion of the discrepancies is offered. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To interpret and moreover to predict whether the structure of the near surface region of an ion bombarded crystalline system will be able to withstand irradiation, or it will undergo radiation induced amorphization is a difficult problem. The atomistic segregation charge transfer model is adopted here to interpret the stage of nucleation of a crystalline, or an amorphous structure in binary films of covalently bonded materials, ion bombarded under conditions favoring the formation of dense collision cascades. A nonequilibrium compositional profile is supposed to develop at the cascade–matrix interface, following bombardment induced interface segregation of one of the film constituents. Such a local stoichiometry change is associated with the development of a nonequilibrium electronic density profile. Interatomic interactions leading to the formation of amorphous, or crystalline nuclei are treated by local charge transfer reactions. Qualitative differences are found both concerning the energetics of charge transfer reactions and the bonding features of the nuclei, with a set of 14 compounds undergoing amorphization and 12 compounds remaining crystalline upon ion bombardment. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The mechanism of the thermomechanical instability of an elastically slowly strained solid is explored, by a normal mode analysis of temperature and strain fluctuations. The strain dependence of the Grüneisen parameter is found to play a major role, since it controls the rates of damping of the lowest wavevector acoustic excitations pumped by the imposed strain. For α-titanium the instability is found to occur at a critical strain comparable with that of the elastic limit. The instability can be envisaged in terms of a fast growing deformation, presumably associated with an acoustic emission.

Notes: Summary The microscopic interpretation of phase stability in alloys undergoing thermoelastic martensitic transformation involves a difficult nucleation problem. The strong dependence of the critical temperature for the onset of martensite on composition requires the introduction of nonclassical defective nuclei, of dynamic nature, to obtain reasonable estimates of the energy barrier to nucleation. Experimental data on β-Au−Zn-based alloys are organized in the framework of the atomistic model of the valence electron localization degree. The resulting charge transfer scheme is strictly correlated to elementary surface segregation events driven by elemental surface energy differences within the studied alloys. The connection between martensitic nucleation and charge transfer segregation is discussed, focusing on the physical meaning of the various energy terms entering the model.

Notes: Summary A model for glass formation and crystal structure retainment in binary alloys undergoing irradiation by energetic ion beams is presented. The major physical features provided by experimental conditions, namely spike formation and evolution of bombardment-induced surface compositional variations, are taken into account. At spike-lattice interface interatomic interactions with charge transfer occur, which induce formation of amorphization, or crystallization nuclei. Qualitative differences are found between glass forming and crystalline systems.

Notes: Summary The structural characteristics of quasi-crystalline phases obtained by ion irradiation are compared with those of the corresponding amorphous structures. Chemical forces drive the formation of atomic clusters and their spatial organization under specific geometric constraints. The same elementary structural units exist in quasi-crystalline and glassy phases which display identical local order, their main difference being the degree of defect organization at the interface between locally ordered atomic groups.
