Notes: In this paper we investigate the role economic resources play in the decision of young Italian adults to leave the parental home. This is of particular interest given that, in Italy, young people leave home considerably later than in other European countries. We use the first two waves of the Italian sample of the European Community Household Panel. We use a Heckman selection-type probit procedure to account for left censoring and unobserved heterogeneity. We find that economic circumstances are important. In particular, we find personal income resources, as well as parental income levels, to be crucial in leaving home. Our results suggest that stable employment is an important prerequisite for men to start their own household. For women, on the other hand, finding a partner seems to the most important factor in becoming independent of their parents.

Notes: Variability in the response to salinity within Chloris gayana (Rhodes grass) germplasm was evaluated under field conditions, and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to assess genetic relatedness among cultivars/accessions. RAPD analysis showed a clustering of cultivars of known relatedness: cv. Pioneer and accessions Local and Trancas (derived from an old Pioneer pasture established in saline soil) belonged to the same cluster, Katambora to another and tetraploid Boma and Callide could be further separated, Boma belonging to a fourth, distant cluster. Field experiments were laid out in two types of plots: control [with electrical conductivity of the saturation extract (EC) = 3·64 dS m−1] and saline (EC=13·10 dS m−1) and two experiments were carried out: one to evaluate the effects of salinity on emergence and establishment, and the other, with a uniform number of plants per plot, to evaluate yield under saline conditions. All cultivars/accessions had salinity-associated decreases in dry-matter (DM) production during the establishment phase. After this stage, 1-year DM yield was similar in all cultivars within each salinity level and production in the saline plots was significantly lower than in controls only in cv. Callide and accession Trancas. Second-year production in the non-saline plots increased by 30% on average over the previous year, whereas an average 40% reduction was observed in the saline plots. Thus, salinity had a negative effect on Rhodes grass establishment and persistence. The cultivars could not be ranked unequivocally by production under saline conditions, but tetraploids Boma and Callide may be said to be less tolerant than the rest on the basis of an increased proportion of dead leaves and decreased number of stolons observed in the saline plot.

Notes: Process management is a managerial approach characterised by the focus on business processes that can provide an important contribution to the management of public sector organisations. The significance of this approach for the management of inter-organisational relations in the public sector is highlighted. A model for the analysis of the factors enabling the implementation of process management in the public sector is proposed. The Italian experience of the one-stop shops for businesses is studied; the relevance of process management approaches for the success of this reform is shown. Implications for public managers at all levels of government are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A vegetation and rangeland survey has been carried out in the lower Shabelle region, Southern Somalia, with the aim of evaluating the natural vegetation as a source of forage for grazing animals. In this framework, four different vegetation types have been recognized and mapped using remote sensing techniques; general vegetation characteristics, mainly floristic and physiognomic aspects, are described. Dynamic relationships between these vegetation types are also outlined.

Notes: Abstract Copper electrocrystallization at high current density was studied in a pure copper sulphate-sulphuric acid bath. Besides the influence of the current density and electrolyte flow rate, the influence of the titanium substrate pretreatment on the nucleation and growth of copper is emphasized. The 100 μm thick copper deposits give two different layers. The layer in contact with the substrate shows a high density of very small crystals and corresponds to the unoriented dispersion (UD) type in the Winand diagram. The structure of the layer in contact with the electrolyte is, on the contrary, mainly controlled by the electrodeposition parameters (current density and electrolyte flow rate) and corresponds to a field oriented (FT)-UD type in this diagram. It is shown that the thickness of the transition zone between the substrate influenced deposit and that controlled by the electrodeposition parameters depends on the anodic oxidation conditions of the substrate pretreatment. The copper deposits were separated from their substrate and analysed by TEM (including cross-sections), SEM and X-ray diffraction. Some copper foils recrystallize at room temperature.

Notes: Abstract The conformational features of three tetrahydropyridinyl oxime cognition activators 1-(1-methyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-3-pyridinyl)ethanone oxime·HCl (I), 1-(1-methyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-4-pyridinyl)ethanone oxime·HCl (II), and 1-(1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-3-pyridinyl)ethanone O-methyloxime HCl(III) were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and the quantum mechanical semiempirical PM3 methods. Results indicate that in the solid state the drugs exhibit “anti-syn” isomerism, with the substituent at the oxime oxygen atomanti oriented in respect to C=N. This arrangement also represents a low-energy situationin vacuo, as confirmed at the PM3 level, although another low-energy conformation (“clinal-anti”) could be of significance in the conformational energetics of the drugs.

Notes: Abstract The structure of the title compound was determined by the direct methods and refined by fullmatrix least-squares to anR of 0.041 for 1467 diffractometer-measured reflections. The dihedral angle between the aromatic-ring mean planes is 128° and the central seven-membered azepine ring adopts a boat conformation, as usual for compounds of this type. X-ray powder diffraction of the compound indicates that the crystal selected appears to be representative of the sample as a whole.
