Notes: A case-based research approach is used to illustrate the power of modelling manufacturing performance measures and to help develop insights into the nature and problems evident when attempting to use simulation across different enterprise sectors. The research methodology used considered three specific companies, each with distinctive characteristics and attributes; a small to medium enterprise, a medium to large enterprise and a large enterprise. From a cross-case analysis of the use of discreet-event (DE) simulation when applied in these instances, the research attempts to develop policy implications that will provide a better understanding of how simulation studies should be approached across different manufacturing enterprises.

The research methodology used considered three specific companies, each with distinctive characteristics and attributes; a small to medium enterprise (SME), a medium to large enterprise (MLE) and a large enterprise (LE). From a cross-case analysis of the use of discrete-event simulation when applied in these instances, the research attempts to develop policy implications that will provide a better understanding of how simulation studies should be approached across different manufacturing enterprises and how simulation can help organizations achieve organizational excellence.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes research into the development of an intelligent simulation environment. The environment was used to analyze reactive scheduling scenarios in a specific flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) configuration. Using data from a real FMS, simulation models were created to study the reactive scheduling problem and this work led to the concept of capturing instantaneous FMS status data as snapshot data for analysis. Various intelligent systems were developed and tested to asses their decision-making capabilities. The concepts of “History Logging” and expert system “learning” is proposed and these ideas are implemented into the environment to provide decision-making and control across a FMS schedule lifetime. This research proposes an approach for the analysis of reactive scheduling in an FMS. The approach and system that was subsequently developed was based on the principle of automated intelligent decision-making via knowledge elicitation from FMS status data, together with knowledge base augmentation to facilitate a learning ability based on past experiences.

Description: Article In contrast to the significant retreat of Arctic sea-ice, Antarctic sea-ice has exhibited a modest expansion in recent decades. Here, the authors employ model simulations to investigate the drivers of this unexpected trend. Nature Communications doi: 10.1038/ncomms9656 Authors: Richard J. Matear, Terence J. O’Kane, James S. Description: Attribution of cause of climate change is hindered by our ability to separate intrinsic low frequency variability from the forced response in the climate system. We characterise the spatio-temporal characteristics of intrinsic variability by comparing ensemble averages of in-band fractional variances in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) pre-industrial control simulations to estimates from observations and reanalyses. For sea surface temperature and sea level height anomalies both models and observations show that variability on time scales less than 5 years is predominantly in the tropics and has the spatial signature of ENSO. On progressively longer timescales the variance moves to the extratropics and from mid- to higher latitudes while displaying spatially coherent features. The CMIP5 models show good agreement in the spatial and temporal apportioning of in-band variance when the variances are normalised.
