Notes: Previous work by the authors [B. M. Barker and R. F. O'Connell, Phys. Rev. D 12, 329 (1975); 14, 861 (1976); B. M. Barker, G. G. Byrd, and R. F. O'Connell, Astrophys. J. (in press); B. M. Barker and R. F. O'Connell, Gen. Relativ. Gravit. (to be published)] on the post-Newtonian (order c−2) gravitational two-body problem with spin and parametrized post-Newtonian parameters γ and β was concerned with the relative position r=r1−r2. Here this work is completed by finding the individual positions r1 and r2, which is necessary for the interpretation of certain binary-system observations. First the center of inertia rCI is found. This makes it possible to obtain the positions r1 and r2 and the center of mass rCM as a function of the relative position r, relative velocity v, and spin angular momenta S(1) and S(2) of the two bodies. Thus, if a solution r=r(t) exists, then solutions r1=r1(t) and r2=r2(t) also exist. The final results are given in a very general coordinate system specified by four arbitrary dimensionless parameters. In particular, the spin-orbit potential energy terms VS1 and VS2 are given without going to a frame of reference where the total momentum is zero.

Notes: A heteroquantum-dots (HQD) model for hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon films (nc-Si:H) is proposed. The main features of our model are as follows. (i) the nanocrystalline grains and the amorphous counterparts in which they are embedded have very different band gap and band structures. As a result, they form heterojunctionlike structures in the interface regions, where the band offset effects dramatically reduce the activation energy and the grains act like quantum dots. (ii) In the presence of an external field, the activated electrons in the quantum dots conduct via quantum tunneling through the interface barriers. By means of the HQD model, we have identified the conduction of nc-Si:H as a thermal-assisted tunneling process. Our results show that there are two distinct regimes for the conductivity of nc-Si:H: (i) the low-temperature regime, where there is a simple activation energy ΔE; (ii) the high-temperature regime, where ΔE is effectively enhanced by the temperature effect of the electronic tunneling in the nanoscale particles. The theory is in good agreement with the experiments. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Based on the exact solution for the potential profile of the 2N turnstile with equal junction capacitances C, equal stray capacitances C0, and a coupling capacitance Cc, we obtain explicit expressions for the Gibbs free energy as well as the corresponding charging energy and the barrier height. In particular, we analyze the effects of the stray capacitances on the turnstile operation. In the C0=0 case, our results for the turnstile operation reduce to those of D. V. Averin, A. A. Odintsov, S. V. Vyshenskii [J. Appl. Phys. 73, 1297 (1993)]. In general, when C0/C is increased, the operable region of the turnstile decreases. Thus, in order to have a high quality turnstile, it is necessary to keep the stray capacitances small. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - The derivative of the hyperbolic cotangent is a standard result which appears in essentially every compilation of mathematical formulas1. Here we point out that this result is incomplete; there is, in fact, an additional term which is proportional to the Dirac delta function. We present the ...

Notes: Abstract It is shown that there is a contribution to the precession of a gyroscope due to the quadrupole moment of the Earth. The magnitude of this additional precession is a maximum for a gyroscope in a satellite in equatorial orbit around the Earth at a moderate altitude, and exceeds the experimental error for observations which cover a span of about one year or greater.

Notes: Abstract We have previously written down a simple second-order equation for the radiating electron and pointed out that its solutions are well behaved. A key feature of this equation is the presence of a term involving the time derivative of the external fieldf(t). Here, we show that a completely equivalent, but less elegant, equation may be written down which contains no derivatives off(t) but, instead, an infinite number of derivatives of the coordinate. However, it has the merit of displaying explicitly how our result differs from that of Abraham-Lorentz.

Notes: Abstract The problem of a quantum oscillator coupled to an independent-oscillator model of a heat bath is discussed. The transformation to normal coordinates is explicitly constructed using the method of Ullersma. With this transformation an alternative derivation of an exact formula for the oscillator free energy is constructed. The various contributions to the oscillator energy are calculated, with the aim of further understanding this formula. Finally, the limitations of linear coupling models, such as that used by Ullersma, are discussed in the form of some critical remarks.
