Abstract Considering operations in icebound waters, the knowledge of ice conditions, ice properties, and the structure of ice features is of utmost importance. This paper describes the work done and the methods used during recent years on expeditions to the continental shelf of Russia. The work has been carried out by Finnish-Russian research teams. The sea areas in question are: the Sea of Okhotsk, the Barents Sea, and the Pechora Sea. The expedition should cover the sea area investigated as thoroughly as possible. The two main alternatives are to use a ship as the research platform or to carry out the work from a land base using a helicopter to move to ice. This paper will discuss in general the expedition arrangements, the execution, work deviation between the parties, results of the research, and utilization of the results.
