    Notes: Summary The equilibrium theory of island biogeography provided a framework for describing the colonization of apple leaf ‘islands’ by filamentous fungi. Surface sterilization of living leaves in situ by hydrogen peroxide allowed the colonization process to be followed from its inception. Numbers of species of filamentous fungi per leaf fluctuated from 6 to 21 during the first 2 weeks of colonization and equilibrated at about 12 by the third week. Turnover occurred in species composition at equilibrium. The equilibrium number of species was not related to leaf area. The presence of an equilibrium condition with turnover on the leaf surfaces is consistent with two key tenets of the theory of island biogeography. However, the apparent back of a species-area relationship is inconsistent with the island model.

    Notes: Summary A binomial-like model is developed that may be used in genetic linkage studies when data are generated by a testcross with parental phase unknown. Four methods of estimation for the recombination frequency are compared for data from a single group and also from several groups; these methods are maximum likelihood, two Bayesian procedures, and an ad hoc technique. The Bayes estimator using a noninformative prior usually has a lower mean squared error than the other estimators and because of this it is the recommended estimator. This estimator appears particularly useful for estimation of recombination frequencies indicative of weak linkage from samples of moderate size. Interval estimates corresponding to this estimator can be obtained numerically by discretizing the posterior distribution, thereby providing researchers with a range of plausible recombination values. Data from a linkage study on pitch pine are used as an example.

    Notes: Summary Estimates of recombination frequency among enzyme loci of pitch pine revealed two new linkages, Mdh3:Pgm2 (θ=0.01) and Pep1:Mdh4 (θ=0.38), and confirmed two previously established linkages. Tighter linkage (θ=0.30) was ruled out for nearly all gene pairs examined. In general, the Bayesian approach used in this study to test for linkage performed better than alternative methods.

    Notes: Summary Analysis of variance and principal components methods have been suggested for estimating repeatability. In this study, six estimation procedures are compared: ANOVA, principal components based on the sample covariance matrix and also on the sample correlation matrix, a related multivariate method (structural analysis) based on the sample covariance matrix and also on the sample correlation matrix, and maximum likelihood estimation. A simulation study indicates that when the standard linear model assumptions are met, the estimators are quite similar except when the repeatability is small. Overall, maximum likelihood appears the preferred method. If the assumption of equal variance is relaxed, the methods based on the sample correlation matrix perform better although others are surprisingly robust. The structural analysis method (with sample correlation matrix) appears to be best.

    Description: The effect of plot edge on tree growth on four uniformly spaced plots was assessed prior to using the data for development of growth simulation models. The plots were established with hybrid poplar (PopulusbalsamiferaL. × P. tristisFrisch.) cuttings at square spacings of 1, 2, 4, and 8 ft (0.30, 0.61, 1.22, and 2.44 m) with a larger open space to separate the plots. The survival, diameter, and height of individual trees were determined annually for 5 years. Data from the narrowest spacing (1 × 1 ft) (1 ft = 0.3048 m) and at the oldest age (5 years old) were used to describe attempts to determine the extent of any edge effect. The methodology involved the examination of diameter and survival trends across the plots. Regression analysis was also used to determine a uniform interior region with diameter at breast height as the dependent variable and location, number of live neighbors, and a measure of competition as possible independent variables. Each of the methods has limitations, but all of them provide some evidence as to the number of trees affected by the border.
