Notes: [Auszug] There are several discussions6?9 of outflowing radiation in spherically symmetric metrics. The central mass M decreases with time, the energy being carried off by radiation. In common with all the previous work, I use a radial coordinate r such that 4pr2 is the true area of a sphere of "radius" r. ...

Notes: [Auszug] The cosmological constant acts so as to provide a gravitational force in local Newtonian coordinates that increases linearly with distance r from the local Newtonian origin, like a simple harmonic oscillator. Specifically, the equivalent potential is - % Xr2, as can be seen from Jackson's first ...

Notes: [Auszug] If the jet that is supposed to emit the spectral lines approaches the observer so that an observer in the line of sight but near the quasi-stellar object sees the lines with a special relativistic blue-shift Dl/ls = zs, z〈0, then the local cosmological red-shift zc must exceed the observed ...

Notes: Abstract The Poynting-Robertson formulae are used to evaluate the motion and terminal velocity of a particle ejected from rest in a powerful radiation field due to a point source, generalizing the results of Chandrasekhar (1934) to the relativistic case.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the correlation between the separation on the sky of certain QSO's and the nearest bright galaxy to them with the galaxy's redshift could be an artifact of the sampling procedure or small number statistics. The overall association between 3C QSO's and bright galaxies remains as suggestive, but not compelling, evidence for a physical relationship.

Notes: Abstract The relationship J=(1 − β)S + α c I c common to most supersonic radiative transfer theories, is given a detailed interpretation in terms of atomic rates and probabilities. It is also generalized to cases whereI c depends on angle. The nature of the escape process and the expressions for the escape probability β are clarified.

Notes: Abstract The growth rate of the relativistic firehose instability is an order of magnitude smaller, near marginal instability, for plasmas with particle energy spectraN(E)dE∞E −2.5dE than for those withN(E)dE∞E −3dE. If cosmic rays are accelerated impulsively in limited regions, with initially flat spectra, the sudden increase in the firehose growth rate could lead to release of the particles when the spectrum has steepened beyond exponent 2.5.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-There is no contradiction between Butcher's1 Th/Nd ages for the oldest stars of about 11-12 Gyr and the results of stellar evolution, when the diffusion of helium is taken into account. The evolution of stars of low mass is accelerated by the diffusion of helium towards the centre2 3. When this ...

Notes: [Auszug] Meekins et al. measured a flux of 0.03 photons cm"2 s-1 almost entirely in the range 3-17 A, and from other wavelength channels were able to state that the gas temperature exceeds 8 x 106 K. For a flat counter response I have determined from standard bremsstrahlung formulae4 that it would take 2.6 ...
