Notes: Reversible thermochromism in thin solid films of poly(3-hexylthiophene), or P3HT, has been studied using ultraviolet and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (UPS and XPS, respectively). The UPS and XPS spectra, as well as previously published optical absorption spectra, are analyzed using the results of valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) quantum chemical calculations of the electronic structure of isolated polymer chains. The analysis of the spectra indicates that at elevated temperatures thermally induced electronic localization occurs as a consequence of thermally induced conformational disorder.

Notes: High strain fatigue properties of Alloy 800H have been investigated at 600°C in strain control. The behaviour of solution heat treated material was compared with that of material aged at 550 and 600°C. It was found that both aging treatments extended the fatigue life significantly, the longest fatigue life being observed for fine-grained material aged at 550°C. The results are explicable in terms of partially reversible plastic flow occurring when the γ′ particles are by-passed by shearing.

Notes: Abstract— High strain fatigue properties of AISI 316, AISI 316N and Sandvik 253MA have been investigated at 600°C. The two latter alloys, which contain significant amounts of N, exhibit a higher resistance to fatigue than 316. This effect is accompanied by a planar dislocation slip mode in 316N and 253MA as opposed to a wavy slip mode in 316. The results provide strong evidence that N improves fatigue strength in austenitic stainless steels, by inhibiting cross-slip of screw dislocations.

Notes: Conclusions 1. We have developed a method for plotting C-curves of isothermal martensite transformation by analyzing the temperature and amplitude dependences of IF with thermostatic control in the range of temperatures of martensite transformation. We have obtained data on the inelasticity and microplasticity of the studied alloys in the course of isothermal martensite transformation and have determined the inelastic effects (internal-friction peaks) in warming the alloys up after the martensite transformation. 2. We have determined the activation energy of isothermal martensite transformation in an Fe−Cr−Ni−Mo steel within the framework of the theory of absolute reaction rates, namely,H≅20 kJ/mole. In alloys of the system Fe−Ni−Mo with a double kinetics of martensite transformation the activation energy changes fromH≅6–8 kJ/mole at the nose of the C-curve toH≅2–3 kJ/mole at a temperature approaching the point of adiathermal martensite transformation. 3. We have established the effect of the content of interstitial atoms on the kinetics of the change in the properties of the alloys in subsequent cooling in the temperature range of martensite transformation and the role of trapping of dislocations by interstitial atoms. The formation of saturated impurity atmospheres on dislocations diminishes the role of the dislocations as sites of martensite nucleation due to compensation of the energy of elastic distortions around the dislocations and growth of the energy of formation of martensite nuclei, diminishes the mobility of the dislocations, increases the relaxation stability of austenite, and hampers the development of the isothermal kinetics of initiation and progress of MT.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that multipole dislocation configurations can arise during power-law creep of certain austenitic stainless steels. These multipoles have been analysed in some detail for two particular steels (Alloy 800 and a modified AISI 316L) and it is suggested that they arise either during instantaneous loading or during the primary creep stage. Trace analysis has shown that the multipoles are confined to {1 1 1} planes during primary creep but are not necessarily confined to these planes during steady-state creep unless they are pinned by interstitials.

Notes: Abstract The stability of intergranular TiC in a 20% Cr-30% Ni, Ti stabilized stainless steel and the transformation of TiC to M23C6, has been investigated as a function of creep deformation over a wide range of stresses at 800° C. It was found that diffusion creep does not make a significant contribution to the general ageing process or to the transformation of TiC to M23C6. However, dislocation creep strongly accelerates this transformation and increases the general rate of coarsening of intergranular carbides. It is concluded that this acceleration occurs through the combined action of an increase in the number of available nucleation sites (extrinsic grain boundary dislocations) and dislocation enhanced diffusion.

Notes: Electrically conducting polymer composite films have been synthesized by the exposure of poly(4-vinylpyridine) complexed with cupric ions to pyrrole and water vapor. To immobilize a stoichiometric amount of the oxidant inside the polymer matrix, the ratio of poly(4-vinylpyridine)/cupric ion = 1.8 was chosen. Polypyrrole was formed in this tailored structure by a template polymerization process. Opaque polymer composite films with electrical conductivity up to 60 (Ω cm)-1 have been obtained by this method, However, slightly colored transparent composite thin films with a conductivity as high as 50 (Ω cm)-1 were also produced. The electrically conducting polymer composite films and the metal-polymer complex have been characterized by XPS and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, EDX, and scanning electron microscopy. The polymerization process was also followed by use of a quartz crystal microbalance. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
