    Notes: Anomalous, anisotropic grain growth has been observed in delta(δ)-NiMo intermetallic compound during the annealings of Mo/Ni thin-film diffusion couples at 700 and 800 °C. Two layered microstructures showing median-sized, equiaxed grains and large columnar single crystalline grains were generated. The growth direction of the columnar grains was parallel to the direction of Ni diffusion flux. Electron diffraction indicated that both the median-sized and the columnar grains were δ-NiMo. The composition of δ-NiMo was determined to be Ni48-Mo52 (at.%). According to the thickness of reaction-formed δ-NiMo, the apparent interdiffusion coefficient was measured to be about 10−10 cm2/s which is 4 to 5 orders of magnitude greater than literature data. The enhanced diffusion rate in Ni-Mo, and the anomalous anisotropic grain growth of δ-NiMo compound are discussed on the basis of exothermic reactions between Ni and Mo during diffusional intermixing. The enthalpy of the formation of δ-NiMo is calculated and demonstrated to be sufficient to cause melting/solidification of the compound.

    Notes: Abstract Rapidly solidified Al-Be binary alloys (10%, 20%, and 40%, Be by weight) have been produced by melt-spinning techniques. The microstructures have been evaluated and the elevated temperature mechanical properties have been characterized over a range of strain rates. Despite the fact that the materials exhibited duplex microstructures resulting from high-temperature processing, they showed behaviour typical of dispersion strengthened alloys. The mechanical properties at elevated temperature can accurately b8 described by the equation $$\dot \varepsilon = A(\sigma /E)^{12} $$ exp (−120 kJ mol−1/RT), where $$\dot \varepsilon $$ is the deformation rate,σ is the stress,E is the modulus,A is 8 material constant, andRT has its usual meaning. A direct comparison of the deformation properties was made between binary Al-Be composition and pure aluminium as baseline, as well as between Al-Be and some high temperature aluminium alloys. The Al-Be alloys do not exhibit good high-temperature strength when compared with other high-temperature aluminium alloys, e.g. Al-Fe-Co alloys. This is a result of particle coarsening and agglomeration during processing and testing.

    Notes: Abstract Nickel has successfully been used as an interleaf material to join W-25Re between 900 and 1400° C. The bond strength was found to depend on the temperature and stress at which the bonding process was conducted. It was also found that nickel reacts with the parent metal and forms a Ni-W-Re ternary alloy. The formation of the alloy causes significant embrittlement in the parent material. The alloy first nucleates at the grain boundary and then grows into the grain. Quantitative studies of the growth kinetics of the ternary alloy and its effect on the bond strength are discussed. Joining of W-25Re by self-diffusion bonding has also been successfully demonstrated at temperatures above 1500° C. The effect of surface conditions will be correlated with the quality of the joint.

    Notes: Abstract Beryllium foil is important for a number of aerospace applications including honeycomb structures and metal-matrix composites. In this study, a method of producjng beryllium foil directly from powder or flake is demonstrated. A variety of foils were produced in the thickness range 90–300 μm, free from defects such as pinholes and excessive surface roughness, and exhibiting sufficient formability for honeycomb manufacture. Foil produced directly from powder or flake exhibits crystallographic texture, microstructure, and formability equivalent to foil produced from more massive precursors.

    Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of VBe12, both at room and elevated temperatures (up to 1200°C), have been measured. Room-temperature properties, including Young's modulus, flexural strength, and fracture toughness are reported. The material behaved elastically at room temperature but became plastic at temperatures above 1000°C. Creep properties of VBe12 were also studied in temperature ranges from 1000–1200°C and applied stress ranges from 33–58 MPa. At low strain rates (approximately 〈 10−5s−1), the stress exponent was about 4, suggesting deformation was controlled by dislocation climb. Microstructural examination indicated that fracture was initiated from grain boundaries subjected to tensile stresses. The creep behaviour of VBe12 is briefly compared with that of other intermetallics.

    Notes: Abstract Thin molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) films have been produced by magnetron sputter deposition, and subjected to oxidation tests for the study of “MoSi2 pest”-a phenomenon showing disintegration of a solid piece of MoSi2 into powdery products. The as-prepared films were of an amorphous structure. Oxidation of the films in air at 500° C led first to cracking of the films, and then the cracked pieces eventually evolved into disintegrated powders with a yellowish appearance. Secondary electron microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy revealed that the reaction products consisted of MoO3 whiskers (platelets), Si-Mo-O fibres, SiO2 clusters, and some residual MoSi2. The disintegration of MoSi2 films appeared to be independent of their crystal structure; a similar phenomenon was also observed in crystallized films, with a metastable hexagonal structure, oxidized under the same conditions. The disintegration of the MoSi2 films is compared to and correlated with the “pest reaction” of bulk MoSi2.
