Description: Use of a microprocessor for providing navigation information from the inherent hyperbolic geometries of Loran-C was discussed. The advantages Loran-C offers over VOR/DME as a primary navigation aid are identified. These advantages include long range coverage by several stations, coverage at low altitudes, and the capability to have nonprecision approaches at airports not already served by landing aids. Modern digital electronic technology is used to produce a device to convert Loran-C data to useful pilot information using simple software algorithms and low cost microprocessor devices. The cost and lack of availability of suitable processors to execute these algorithms have prevented a Loran-C navigator from being developed. Results indicate that the microprocessor based Loran-C navigator has an accuracy of 1.0 nm or less over an area typically covered by a triad of Loran-C stations and can execute a position update in less than 0.2 seconds.

Description: The problem of translating the time of occurrence of received Loran-C pulses into a time, referenced to a particular period of occurrence is addressed and applied to the design of a digital word generator for a Loran-C sensor processor package. The digital information from this word generator is processed in a KIM-1 microprocessor system which is based on the MOS 6502 CPU. This final system will consist of a complete time difference sensor processor for determining position information using Loran-C charts. The system consists of the KIM-1 microprocessor module, a 4K RAM memory board, a user interface, and the Loran-C word generator.

Description: Development of a low cost Loran C receiver for general aviation use is discussed. The preparation and procedure of a flight test conducted with a receiver design which utilizes a phase locked loop oscillator to track the Loran C signals is described. It is indicated that such a receiver is a viable alternative for future work in developing a low cost Loran-C navigator.

Description: The results of two methods of obtaining timely and accurate severe weather presentations in the cockpit are detailed. The first method described is a course up display of uplinked weather radar data. This involves the construction of a demonstrator that will show the feasibility of producing a course up display in the cockpit of the NASA simulator at Langley. A set of software algorithms was designed that could easily be implemented, along with data tapes generated to provide the cockpit simulation. The second method described involves the uplinking of sferic data from a ground based 3M-Ryan Stormscope. The technique involves transfer of the data on the CRT of the Stormscope to a remote CRT. This sferic uplink and display could also be included in an implementation on the NASA cockpit simulator, allowing evaluation of pilot responses based on real Stormscope data.

Description: A small microprocessor-based system designed to: contain all or most of the interface hardware, designed to be easy to access and modify the hardware, to be capable of being strapped to the seat of a small general aviation aircraft, and to be independent of the aircraft power system is described. The system is used to develop a low cost Loran C sensor processor, but is designed such that the Loran interface boards may be removed and other hardware interfaces inserted into the same connectors. This flexibility is achieved through memory-mapping techniques into the microprocessor.
