Description: A nutricline (as termed by Cullen, 1982) exists along the transect Nha Trang - Luzon during May - June 2000 investigation. Variation ranges of nitrate and silicate were comparable with data of JOMSRE-SCS investigation during April - May 1996 whereas the maximum value of phosphate was higher. Vertical distribution of nutrients was irregularly in euphotic layer, the highest concentrations were found in stations 3 and 12. In deeper layer nutrient concentrations increased with depth. Phosphate was concentrated in the western part of the transect; high concentrations of this element and silicate in euphotic layer may due to the effect of upwelling phenomena. N/P molar ratios were lower in euphotic layer, it caused by the nutrient consumption of algae. Better knowledge on chemical, physical characteristics and hydrodynamic regime in the region will contribute to the development of economic activities in the region.

Description: Three spatial structure groups of radionuclides in U and Th series, 210Pb-excess and 137Cs, and 40K were found based on analyzing temporal and spatial datum of their content by factor analysis with oblique rotation in Nhatrang bay. U and Th spatial structure with their contours decreased toward the offshore, ran longshore and divided seawater of bay into two parts with strong gradient on both sides. Inside part located from center of Nhatrang bay toward the seashore with three main deposit centers of their contents higher than 23 Bq/kg.dry for 238U and 40 Bq/kg.dry for 232Th, indicated unstability of shoreline. Almost sediments coming from river extended toward the offshore, were stopped and transported toward southeastern. The outside part was less than above mentioned content. The boundary line between two parts superposed with the constantly limit line of turbid plume in the rainy season. Direct influence of the continental runoff was limited by the 9 Bq/kg.dry contour of 238U, 19 Bq/kg.dry contour of 232Th. Longshore current was a predominant process whereas lateral transport as sifting and winnowing process of finer grains in sediments of Nhatrang bay. Areas that had very low content of 137Cs and 210 Pb-excess adjoining shoreline showed areas being eroded. Accumulation of 137Cs and 210 Pbexcess nearby river mouth characterized for fine compositions of sediments controlled by seasonal plumes and sites further toward the south indicated finer materials transported from river and accumulated in lack of hydrodynamic process. Near shore accumulation of 40K revealed the sediments there originated from bed erosion.

Description: This paper focused on introducing the research results of some principal characteristics for planning of mariculture development such as the space for construction of mariculture projects, characteristics of climate, meteorology, hydrology, dynamics, environmental quality and carrying capacity of the coastal waters. The optimum area for intensive mariculture development is 9,460 ha, located between the depths of 6-20-25 m with the bottom which is a thick sandy mud - muddy sand ground. At present, the exploited area for mariculture is only about 780 ha, covering 8.2% of the optimum area, less than 0.5% of total area suitable for mariculture. The wind velocity in the coastal zone often ranges between 0.6 – 9.0 m/s. The wave height often ranges between 0.3-0.9m, within the present safety limit for construction of mariculture projects. The maximum current velocity reaches to 29-52cm/s, usually the current velocity is below 10cm/s, satisfying the limit of dynamics for mariculture development. The water exchange time in the coastal bays ranges between 6-12 days. The environment quality in the coastal waters of Khanh Hoa province has shown signs of local pollution, especially, pollution of sedimental environment in the developed mariculture, condensed residential and developed industrial areas. The average toxic index of the water environment ranges between 0 - 49.2%, the maximum value reaches to 54.5% and in the sedimental environment, the average value ranges between 21.9 – 67.5%, and the maximum value reaches to 97.0%. The total carrying capacity of the coastal waters ranges between 3.13-12.71 tons nitrogen/day. The organic assimilative capacity is 0.01– 0.42 tons BOD/day. Nowadays, the carrying pressure of the coastal areas of Khanh Hoa province has reached to 35-55% of the carrying limit of the waters, although mariculture is not developed yet. Therefore the farming methods and the policies for management of development must be changed.

Description: In the Vietnamese waters, the value of Chlorophyll a concentration ranged from 0.29 to 2.58mg.m-3, average value of 1.20  0.76mg.m-3 for the shallow waters and from 0.05 to 1.24mg.m-3, average value of 0.37  0.37mg.m-3 for the continental shelf waters. In the offshore, the Chlorophyll a concentration is relatively lower, ranged from 0.13 to 0.24 mg.m-3. The assimilated carbon index in the waters of Vietnamese continental shelf ranged from 0.84 to 4.25 mgC.mgChl-a-1.day-1, average value is 1.66  0.95 mgC.mgChl-a-1.day-1. In the culture pools, bay and coastal waters, the assimilated carbon index is highest, average value of 121.59  25.99mgC.mgChl-a-1.day-1. Using the Chlorophyll a concentration to assess primary production with the experimental equation showed that primary production ranged from 100 - 500mg.m-3.day-1 in coastal waters. In the offshore, primary production value is lower, ranged from 0.07 to 30 mgC.m-3. day-1. The studied results argued that ecological conditions in the coastal zone give facility for the process of primary production and phytoplankton development.
