Notes: Momentum and heat transfer associated with a translating liquid droplet with/without mass efflux from the droplet surface in a quiescent argon thermal plasma environment is studied. A Chebyshev–Legendre spectral method with a fractional time stepping method is expanded to treat the compressible nature of the thermal plasma flow as well as the internal droplet incompressible flow. Steady-state solutions for the case of plasma flow over a constant temperature solid sphere and incompressible flow over a droplet without mass efflux from the droplet are calculated and compared with previously published results. The interfacial phenomena are studied with interfacial physical properties. Transient solutions with droplet internal motion and convective heat transfer with/without mass efflux from the sphere surface are presented. Results indicate that uniform droplet internal temperature is established more quickly than that of a solid sphere in the plasma environment for no mass efflux case. Also, a symmetric interfacial velocity distribution develops along the droplet interface as Reynolds number increases. In case of mass efflux from the sphere, results show that the drag force and heat transfer rate are reduced in the presence of radial mass efflux at the droplet surface.

Notes: The effects of substitution of Ca by Ba in La1−xCaxMnO3 (LCMO) with x〈0.5 were investigated systematically in order to clarify the role of the size of the A cations. As for the La1−x(Ba–Ca)xMnO3 (LBCMO) films of ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) region (x=0.2; 0.3; and 0.4), by doping Ba, the ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) and the insulator-to-metal (IM) transition temperature (TIM) were improved about 30–60 K, compared with those of LCMO thin films with the same ratio of Mn3+:Mn4+. Especially, La0.7Ba0.1Ca0.2MnO3 thin films have an anomalously high TC (about room temperature) and a TIM of 275 K under zero field. In the ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) region (x=0.15; 0.1), the Ba doping enables the IM transition and remarkably heightens the TC as well. The phase diagram shows that in the slightly doped region (x〈0.5), Ba doping has made the FMM phase significantly expanded. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigated the transport and magnetic properties of La0.4Ba0.1Ca0.5MnO3−y thin films to see the effect of substitution of the small atom Ca by Ba, which is much bigger. La0.4Ba0.1Ca0.5MnO3−y thin films have been fabricated by a pulsed laser deposition technique. The electrical resistance has been measured in the range of 20–200 K under the field from zero up to 9 T. Under zero field, at T∼37 K, an insulator-to-metal (IM) transition was observed, as expected. However, we found that the magnetic field dependence of the resistivity seems to be anomalous since TIM shifts to a lower temperature when the magnetic field is increased and the magnetoresistance at low temperature is positive. Magnetization measurements imply that in the metallic region, canted antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states coexist. Phase separation is suggested. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Heterozygous mutations in PTPN11, which encodes SHP-2, cause ∼50% of cases of Noonan syndrome. The SHP-2 phosphatase relays signals from activated receptor complexes to downstream effectors, ...

Notes: The antigen-binding fragments (Fab) of two murine monoclonal antibodies (mAb) S25-2 and S45-18, specific for carbohydrate epitopes in the lipopolysacchaide of the bacterial family Chlamydiaceae, have been crystallized in the presence and absence of synthetic oligosaccharides corresponding to their respective haptens. Crystals of both Fabs show different morphology depending on the presence of antigens. The sequence of mAb S45-18 was determined and shows a remarkable homology to that reported for mAb S25-2. These crystals offer an unparalleled opportunity to compare the structure and modes of binding of two homologous antibodies to similar but distinct carbohydrate epitopes.

Notes: Abstract The phenomena of conjugate unsteady heat transfer from a solid spherical particle in a convective environment is numerically investigated for Reynolds numbers in the range from 0.1 to 100. The flow and energy equations for both dispersed and continuous phases are solved using a Chebyshev-Legendre spectral method. This work is an extension of the previous effort of simulating flow around a sphere using spectral method [2] to include heat transfer. General findings indicate that quasi-steady analysis underestimates the overall heat transfer rate significantly at very early time stages, however the extent of underprediction becomes less as time progresses. The underprediction of the quasi-steady assumption becomes larger as Reynolds number increases for a fixed Prandtl number.

Notes: Abstract An electric arc melter used for waste treatment processing is numerically studied. The effects of different plasma working gases are studied by using a laboratory scale test reactor. A two-dimensional finite difference approximation is used to solve the set of governing equations. The Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the combined Maxwell's equation for the electromagnetic fields is used to obtain the temperature and flow fields in the are melter. It is found that the energy efficiency of the air plasma is lower than that of an argon plasma. However, the melted soil volumes are larger using the air plasma than those using the argon plasma. The overall energy efficiency increases cis the gap between the cathode and the soil surface decreases. More uniform gas temperatures are found for the air plasma than that for the argon plasma. Result obtained from the laboratory-scale are melter is used as an input of the energy absorbed into the soil for the USBM arc melter simulation. Results show a maximum temperature of 2195 K at the center of the heat generation and a molten soil exit temperature of 1600 K.
