    Notes: Nickel zinc ferrites have been very widely used in the high-frequency applications. In our present study we have prepared Ni1−x Znx Fe2O4 (0≤x≤1) using novel hydrazinium metal hydrazinecarboxylate precursors. High densities (∼99%) have been obtained for all the ferrites sintered at relatively low temperatures, 1100 °C, in comparison with the conventional method (≥1200 °C). The variation of magnetic properties like magnetic moment, Curie temperature, and permeability with zinc concentration have been studied.

    Notes: A steady-state model for the resistivity of composites is presented, based on the idea that the resistance through a composite is the result of a series of a large number of resistors combined in series and parallel. There are three separate contributions to the resistance: constriction resistance at the contacts, tunneling resistance at the contacts, and the intrinsic filler resistance through each particle, with tunneling resistance generally dominating the magnitude of the overall resistance. The model predicts resistivity increases with increasing filler hardness and/or elastic modulus and insulating film thickness, while resistivity decreases with increasing particle size and intrinsic stress. The room-temperature dc resistivity behavior of conductor-filled silicone rubber composites was investigated to verify the model. Comparison of the model to this experimental data showed that good agreement could be obtained for filler materials in which the tarnish layer was a known quantity for a given powder; for other cases, the experimental values were higher than predicted.

    Notes: Abstract Quartz is known to be ferrobielastic; that is, quartz crystals have domain states (Dauphiné twins) which differ in their elastic compliance values and which can be switched by an appropriately oriented stress. Polycrystalline quartz has also been reported (Tullis 1970) to show preferential orientation of these domains following application of large uniaxial stresses. These experiments were designed to study twinning of synthetic quartz “grains” (minimum size 0.07×0.07×0.02 cm) in specially-constructed composites and of grains in three natural quartz aggregates — a quartzite, a novaculite, and a jasper. Backreflection X-ray techniques were used to verify twinning in the composite grains, while special electroding and electrical detection allowed the twinning processes to be examined in “real time.” Small synthetic quartz crystals were found to behave identically to the massive samples previously studied. Electrical pulses due to the reversal of piezoelectric coefficient d 11 in twinned quartz were detected from quartzite and from the man-made composites. Novaculite also gave electrical pulses which were probably from twinning (evidenced by the correlation of expected and observed pulse sizes and shapes), while no pulses from the jaspers indicative of twinning were detected. Grain size distribution differences are considered the main structural reason for the different behaviors.

    Notes: Abstract Using a neodymium glass laser and time-synchronized pulse detection, second harmonic signals were observed from a number of clay mineral powders. The second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments provide the first physical evidence (other than diffraction patterns) for the polar nature of the kaolinite layer and its stacking sequences. Well-crystallized nacrite and dickite specimens gave signals comparable to those of quartz, but the SHG intensities from the smaller kaolinite and halloysite crystallites were noticeably weaker. Based on results from eight specimens, there appears to be a direct correlation between SHG intensity and particle size, similar to that reported previously for quartz.

    Notes: Gadolinium molybdate was twinned by irradiating the crystals for a few seconds with a 10.6 μm CO2 laser. Slit-shaped regions were irradiated to produce localized heating, thereby setting up suitably oriented thermal stresses of sufficient size to induce mechanical twinning. Ferroelastic twin patterns are difficult to control by this method because the required slit orientations are not parallel to domain-wall directions.

    Notes: Using the pulse-superposition method, the second-order elastic stiffnesses of aquamarine were deter- mined to be C11 = 3.085, C33 = 2.834, C12 = 1.289, C13 = 1.185, C44 = 0.661 Mbar. Results for goshenite beryl are very similar. Initial pressure derivatives were also determined.
