Notes: Simian B and T lymphoid cell lines were shown to maintain surface markers found on mature lymphocytes in vivo. The T lymphoid cell lines expressed Ia-like antigens on their surfaces, further suggesting that they represent mature, activated T cells. These Ia antigens show a structural similarity to Ia on human cells although some diversity exists. The Ia antigen expressed on T lymphoid cell lines was shown to be very similar to those on B lymphoid cell lines. Owl monkey and marmoset T lymphoid cell lines were also shown to express a VH immunoglobulin-related determinant, a marker which is thought to be associated with T cell antigen receptor. Owl monkey and marmoset T cell lines express a surface antigen which identifies the sheep erythrocyte receptor on human T cells and some of these lines express an antigen found on human helper T cells. It is noteworthy that substantial conservation of surface components has occurred within primate evolution such that monoclonal antibodies to human Ia, OKT-11a and Leu 3a markers can be used to type lymphocytes of lower primates.

Notes: The phylogenetic distribution of antigens present on human lymphocytes was investigated by incubating human or simian cells with murine anti-human monoclonal antibodies and then determining the level of reactivity with a radiolabelled anti-murine IgG reagent. The monoclonal antibodies used were specific for a T-cell antigen, lymphoid and lymphoid:myeloid antigens, Ia antigens, and β2 microglobulin. The cells examined included B- and T-lymphoblastoid cell lines and fresh peripheral blood lymphocytes separated by sheep erythrocyte rosetting into T-cell and non T-cell fractions. Results of these studies showed that the antibodies gave complete cross-reactivity with gorilla and chimpanzee cells while B-cell lines of orangutan origin had lost lymphoid and β2 microglobulin markers. Gibbon cells and cells of Old World and New World monkeys reacted strongly only with monoclonal antibodies against Ia antigenic determinants. These Ia antigens were found on the non T-cell fraction of fresh peripheral lymphocytes, on B-cell lines and on some virus induced T-cell tumour lines. Immunoprecipitation analysis using the anti-Ia antibodies showed a degree of molecular diversity on owl monkey and marmoset cells compared to the Ia antigens associated with human cells.

Notes: A monoclonal antibody designated ‘antibody 390’ (Ab 390) with anti-human Thy-1 reactivity was prepared by the hybridoma technique from the splenocytes of BALB/c mice immunized with human fetal brain. This antibody was shown to have anti-human Thy-1 reactivity because (1) it precipitated a molecule with a molecular weight of about 24,000 daltons, (2) it had a pattern of reactivity similar to that of previously described anti-human Thy-1 antibodies and (3) purified human Thy-1 antigen specifically inhibited binding of Ab 390 to a known antigen-positive cell line. It was the intent of this study to investigate the distribution of Thy-1 on normal and malignant haematopoietic cells in humans and non-human primates. We show here that Ab 390 did not react with human peripheral blood leucocytes, bone marrow cells or splenocytes by immunofluorescence but did react with subcapsular and cortical fetal thymocytes by peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunohistology. A section of fetal spleen demonstrated staining of connective tissue and blood vessels and rare reactive lymphocytes. Adult spleen contained Thy-1-positive cells surrounding the white pulp and in the marginal zone, but single-cell suspensions of splenocytes did not react with Ab 390. Ab 390 was tested against a variety of fresh human leukaemia cells and human cell lines and was shown to react with only the acute lymphoblastic leukaemia T cell line RPMI 8402 and HPB-MLT. Non-human primate studies revealed reactivity with a number of T cell lines from New World primates (cotton-topped and red-bellied marmosets) and peripheral blood granulocytes (owl monkey). Our studies support previous findings that suggest that human Thy-1 may be a marker for early T lymphocytes in man, and its distribution on non-human primate T cell lines suggests the same for certain species of non-human primates. Non consistent with the distribution on human cells was the demonstration of Ab 390 reactivity with owl monkey granuylocytes.

Notes: Contents The analytical calculation of flux distribution within the compole iron of a compensated d.c. machine is obtained on the basis of the solution of the pole gap's potential problem. After the definition of the magnetic boundary value problem, vector potentials for the compole are set up which have to satisfy boundary conditions on its surface. Thus, initially unknown constants of compole potentials can be expressed by known quantities of pole-gap dimensions. Finally, all theoretical results are taken into account for the practical field calculation of a rolling-mill motor for which different operational modes are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents After defining the stationary skin-effect boundary value problem at issue, the magnetic field within the conductor is determined, where the constants in the field setups have to be evaluated from a system of complex linear equations. Using the line integral of the electric field strenght, an analytic formula for the change of the impedance in question is derived which enables the same to be calculated from the dimensions of the configuration and the skin depth. The evaluation is preferably done for notches of small height, as in the case of practically significant hairline cracks encountered frequently.

Notes: Contents The magnetic field within the pole gap of a compensated d.c. machine is calculated, particularly the distribution of the flux-density's normal component on the rotor surface. The definition of the two-dimensional boundary value problem in magnetostatics is followed by the analytical solution in matrix notation. In doing so, initially unknown constants of vector potential setups are determined by solving linear equation systems. Relations stated for the flux-density distribution are then checked for a special case with the aid of the method of Conformal Mapping. By this the correctness of the analytical solution can be confirmed.

Notes: Abstract From the temperature dependence of the specific heat of the semiconductor La2CuO4 and the high temperature superconductors La1.8Sr0.2CuO4 (T c =37.2 K) and YBa1.9K0.1Cu3O6.9 (T c =91.5 K) in the range 1.5–30 K, a strong similarity of the lowfrequency part of their phonon density of states with a peak around 10 meV could be inferred. In the case of La1.8Sr0.2CuO4 the thermodynamical critical field belowT c has been determined and using the Rutger's formula and the BCS model, a Sommerfeld coefficient γ=9 mJ·mol−1 K−1 was obtained, which, taking into account recent results of band structure calculations leads to an electron-phonon enhancement factor γ=1.3, value compatible withT c =36 K when using McMillan's formula forT c . A systematic study of the magnetization offered evidence for strong flux trapping effects at higher fields and for Meissner shielding by superconducting Josephson currents in fields below 6 mT at 4.2 K.
