    Notes: Abstract During the past decade, significant advances in thein situ measurements of planetary magnetic fields have been made. The U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. have conducted spacecraft investigations of all the planets, from innermost Mercury out to Jupiter. Unexpectedly, Mercury was found to possess a global magnetic field but neither the Moon nor Venus do. The results at Mars are incomplete butif a global field exists, it is clearly quite weak. The main magnetic field of Jupiter has been measured directly for the first time and confirms, as well as augments appreciably, the past 2 decades of groundbased radio astronomical studies which provided indirect evidence of the field. Progress in developing analytically complete models of the dynamo process suggests a possible common origin for Mercury, Earth and Jupiter.

    Notes: Abstract The interplanetary sector structure observed by the IMP-1 satellite during three solar rotations in 1963–4 is compared with the photospheric magnetic field structure observed with the solar magnetograph at Mt. Wilson Observatory. The interplanetary sector structure was most prominent on the sun in latitudes between 10 °N and 20 °N, although the average heliographic latitude of the satellite was 3 1/2 °S. A superposed-epoch analysis of the calcium plage structure obtained from the Fraunhofer Institute daily maps of the sun is used to discuss the relation between the structure of the plages and the interplanetary sector structure. A possible explanation for the observations is discussed in terms of a North-South asymmetry in the flow of the solar wind. It is suggested that these observations favor the “equinoctial” hypothesis as compared with the “axial” hypothesis for the explanation of the semi-annual maxima in geomagnetic activity.

    Notes: Abstract This paper considers six discontinuity surfaces which were observed by magnetometers on 3 spacecraft in the solar wind. It is shown that the actual surface orientations, determined from the measured time delays and solar wind speed, are consistent with the theoretical orientations which were computed from the relation $$\hat n = \hat B \times \hat B'$$ , where $$\hat n$$ is the normal to the surface of a hydromagnetic tangential discontinuity across which the magnetic field direction changes from $$\hat B$$ to $$\hat B'$$ . The plasma and magnetic field data for these discontinuities are consistent with the pressure balance condition, and the magnetic field vectors in the associated current sheets are parallel to the discontinuity surface, as required theoretically. The 6 discontinuity surfaces extended without much distortion over ∼ 0.002 AU. A seventh surface is discussed which satisfies the condition $$\hat n = \hat B \times \hat B'$$ but which extended without much distortion over 0.01 AU. This latter is not a typical surface, however, and its curvature is larger than average. Most of the surfaces tended to lie along the spiral direction, but one was nearly perpendicular to the spiral direction.

    Notes: Abstract Some properties of the interplanetary magnetic field observed by IMP-3 in the latter half of 1965 are discussed with relation to previous satellite observations of the interplanetary field. The sector property remains a prominent feature of the observations, with the average field direction at the Archimedes spiral angle. The sector pattern has a 27-day recurrence period from 1962 to 1964, and during the year 1964 the pattern appears to be quasi-stable. In 1965 the recurrence period is about 28 days, and the evolution of the pattern is more rapid, with new sectors appearing and expanding.

    Notes: Abstract A model of the large-scale magnetic field structure above the photosphere uses a Green's function solution to Maxwell's equations. Sources for the magnetic field are related to the observed photospheric field and to the field computed at a ‘source’ surface about 0.6 R ⊙ above the photosphere. The large-scale interplanetary magnetic field sector pattern is related to the field pattern at this ‘source’ surface. The model generates magnetic field patterns on the ‘source’ surface that compare well with interplanetary observations. Comparisons are shown with observations of the interplanetary magnetic field obtained by the IMP-3 satellite.

    Notes: Abstract Power spectra based on Pioneer 6 interplanetary magnetic field data in early 1966 exhibit a frequency dependence of f −2 in the range 2.8 × 10−4 to 1.6 × 10−2 cps for periods of both quiet and disturbed field conditions. Both the shape and power levels of these spectra are found to be due to the presence of directional discontinuities in the microstructure (〈 0.01 AU) of the interplanetary magnetic field. Power spectra at lower frequencies, in the range of 2.3 × 10−6 to 1.4 × 10−4 cps, reflect the field macrostructure (〉 0.1 AU) and exhibit a frequency dependence roughly between f −1 and f −3/2. The results are related to theories of galactic cosmic-ray modulation and are found to be consistent with recent observations of the modulation.

    Notes: Abstract Recent U.S.S.R. studies of the magnetic field and solar wind flow in the vicinity of Mars and Venus confirm earlier U.S.A. reports of a bow shock wave developed as the solar wind interacts with these planets. Mars 2 and 3 magnetometer experiments report the existence of an intrinsic planetary magnetic field, sufficiently strong to form a magnetopause, deflecting the solar wind around the planet and its ionosphere. This is in contrast to the case for Venus, where it is assumed to be the ionosphere and processes therein which are responsible for the solar wind deflection. An empirical relationship appears to exist between planetary dipole magnetic moments and their angular momentum for Moon, Mars, Venus, Earth and Jupiter. Implications for the magnetic fields of Mercury and Saturn are discussed.
