Description: To identify Kraft liquor effects on spermatogenesis and sperm motility of Caspian kutums by using in vitro culture, the fish testis was incubated with 5, 10 and 15 % (V/V) of liquor for 3 and 6 days. The percentage of motile spermatozoa and its total duration were also measured. Adverse effects on testicular cells were more apparent with the increase of liquor concentrations. The mean size of spermatogonia and spermatocytes decreased significantly (p〈0.001) in dose-dependent manner compared to controls. With the increase of concentration, the number of spermatocytes and spermatids decreased (p〈0.001) but the number of spermatogonia, increased (p〈 0.05). The increase of liquor concentration showed a significantly decrease of percentage of motile spermatozoa and total duration of spermatozoa (p〈0.05) but there was no significant difference in most treatments (p〉0.05). This study showed the detrimental effects of low levels of kraft liquor on testicular development and sperm quality in the kutums.

Description: In recent years efforts to find bioactive compounds from live organisms especially marine animals have been increased. In the present study, the anticancer and cytotoxic effects of sea cucumber body walls (Holothuria leucospilota) were investigated. For this purpose, sea cucumbers were collected from Larak Island at depths of 10 to 30 m and extraction process was done with methanol and diethyl ether solvent which then concentrated by rotary evaporator (40℃) following lyophilization with vacuum freeze dryer. XTT method was used to investigate anticancer and cytotoxic effects of body wall extracts. The results showed that the methanolic extract could prevent proliferation of human oral epidermoid carcinoma cells (KB) at concentrations of 100 and 500 μg/ml. The diethyl etheric extract also could prevent proliferation of KB at 500 μg/ml concentration. Overall result showed that sea cucumber body wall had a strong cytotoxic effect on normal cell line (Human embryonic kidney cell [HEK]) which can be used as potent cytotoxic material. However these extracts did not show significant therapeutic value against KB cells.

Description: Cadmium is one the common heavy metals that usually enters the Caspian Sea and the riverine ecosystems. Effect of Cadmium on spermatogenesis in Caspian kutum and motility of spermatozoa were studied. At first, kutum testis was exposed to Cadmium using in vitro testis culture in 10-5, 10-6 and 10-7 M concentration of CdCl2 solution for 3 and 6 days and in the second experiment, spermatozoa motility was evaluated after exposure to 0, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 mg/l of CdCl2 solutions. With the increase in Cadmium concentration, due to the reclining effect of Cadmium on spermatogenesis, the number of spermatocytes and size of germ cells decreased significantly. Motility of spermatozoa decreased significantly with increasing Cadmium concentration and its motility stopped in 1000 mg/l. Reduction in quality and quantity of germ cells could impair offspring production and recline their viability and thus posing threats on valuable kutums stocks.
