    Notes: Occurrences of 18 scalloped hammerhead sharks tagged with coded ultrasonic transmitters were recorded at seamount El Bajo Espiritu Santo in the Gulf of California over a 10-day period by automated, data-logging monitors. These sharks remained grouped at the seamount during the day and moved separately into the surrounding pelagic environment at night. The temporal pattern of shark occurrences was related to the light-dark cycle: individuals departed prior to dusk and returned near dawn next morning. However, arrivals and departures of more than one shark within short daytime periods indicated group movements to and from the seamount. Sharks returned repeatedly to the tagging site and not to another site centred less than 240 m from the former site.

    Notes: Abstract Rocks with boninitic affinities have been recognised in a number of “ophiolites”, including the Cambrian Heathcote and Mt Wellington Greenstone Belts of Victoria. Boninites and high-Mg andesites from the Heathcote Greenstone Belt show a restricted range of initial ɛ Nd values of between +3.3 to +5.8. Extremely refractory boninites from the Mt Wellington Greenstone Belt have ɛ Nd ranging from +1.3 to −9. Ti/Zr is positively correlated with Sm/Nd with the Heathcote lavas generally possessing greater depletion of Ti and enrichment of Zr relative to the middle and heavy REE with increasing LREE/HREE. These data are consistent with the generation of boninites by partial melting of refractory peridotite following invasion by LREE- and Zr-enriched, low ɛ Nd fluids. Tholeiites overlying the boninites in both greenstone belts have flat REE patterns and ɛ Nd∼+5, lower than that anticipated for lavas derived from depleted MORB source reservoirs in the Cambrian, suggesting that their source was also contaminated by a LREE-enriched, low ɛ Nd component similar to that involved in the generation of the Howqua boninites. The added components have characteristics compatible with their derivation from subducted altered oceanic crust and/or from wet subducted sediments. The identification of boninites and other low-Ti lavas in the Victorian greenstone belts is strong evidence for island arc development in southeastern Australia during the Lower Cambrian and provides further support for a subduction-related origin for many ophiolites.

    Notes: Abstract The predatory behavior of 74 Pacific electric rays (Torpedo californica), studied between August and December during 1988 through 1991 in situ off the Palos Verdes Peninsula, southern California, consisted of two feeding modes: an ambush from the substratum during the day and a more vigorous attack from the water column at night. Predatory motor patterns and electric organ discharges (EODs) were recorded on the video and audio channels of a housed camcorder. Predatory motor patterns included four phases: (1) jump (simultaneous with EOD initiation), (2) pectoral-fin cupping, (3) orientation to prey, and (4) ingestion. The initial electrical activity of the rays was a train of 46 to 414 5-ms monophasic EODs that lasted 0.45 to 7.06 s; the maximum number of EODs produced during an attack was 〉1200. Maximum output, measured on only one ray, was 45 V. Fifty-five rays were presented one of four types of prey stimuli: live fish (LF), freshly-speared fish (FSF), frozen fish (FF), or a simulated bioelectric field (SBF). The percent frequency of attacks for the LF, FSF, and FF treatments ranged from 70 to 〉90%, but was 〈30% for the SBF. The interval between prey presentation and attack was ≃30 s for the LF, FSF, and FF and over five times longer for the SBF; intervals averaged 〈4 s for the three rays tested at night. Attacks by rays on energized electrodes provide the first evidence that electric rays use electroreceptors to detect their prey. However, the lack of clear differences among the four prey treatments in five characteristics of the initial pulse train suggests that a suite of sensory stimuli cooperate in triggering an attack and regulating the electrical output during the attack.

    Notes: Abstract Pure cultures of methanogenic bacteria were shown to utilize acetate as a methanogenic substrate. In the presence of hydrogen, both Methanosarcina barkeri and Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum rapidly converted acetate to methane. This reaction was shown to be dependent on the concentration of hydrogen and acetate. In the absence of hydrogen, acetate was not fermented by methane bacteria. Both the methyl and carboxyl position of acetate were reduced to methane. More 14C-methane was detected from methyl than carboxyl-labeled acetate. The utilization of acetate by cultures of M. thermoautotrophicum was enhanced by addition of CO2/HCO3 −. Methyl labeled acetate was shown to be incorporated into whole cells and converted to 14CO2 and 14CH4 in the presence of H2 and 25 mM CO2/HCO3 −. The importance of acetate utilization in microbial methanogenesis was discussed.

    Notes: Summary Immunoperoxidase methods were used to localize secretory component, immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin G1 in mammary tissue from dairy cows. In lactating tissue, immunostaining for immunoglobulin A and secretory component was observed primarily in the luminal contents of alveoli. By day 2 of involution, alveolar epithelial cells stained for both immunoglobulin A and secretory component. Staining of alveolar epithelial cells for immunoglobulin A and secretory component continued throughout the period of mammary involution. No staining for secretory component was observed in the interalveolar stromal area. Immunoglobulin G1 immunostaining was localized primarily in the interalveolar areas in lactating tissue, but was localized at the apical and basolateral surface of alveolar cells on day 2 of involution. In contrast to immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G1 staining of epithelial cells did not persist and was primarily in the interalveolar areas by day 4. These results suggest that an increased localization of immunoglobulin G1 in bovine mammary epithelial cells may occur transiently in early involution, while an increase in immunoglobulin A and secretory component localization in epithelial cells persists throughout involution.
